I don't know. It's sounds harmless as long as you don't do it in a middle flammable field. It's just something fun and memorable to celebrate a soon to be born kid. Though I can imagine some people are crossing a line between a fun gathering with friends and a show of stunt. Not sure what is distasteful with it. In a lot of cultures there are traditions and folklore about guessing the gender of the kid. People are always curious about it. Why not revel it in a fun way?
Esp since the first gender reveal by that blogger was to celebrate that she had kept her pregnancy long enough for the fetus' sex to be determined (she had a series of miscarriages before this). The celebration was less intended to be "LOOK AT ME AND WHAT BITS MY CHILD HAS" and more "I've made it far enough along in the pregnancy without complications that we know the biological sex of my child"
This is what I'm doing, everyone in my husband's family is pissed. 🤣 waaa "can't get them anything!" We told them we wanted gender neutral because we weren't going crazy on gender specific items when they are born anyway. Scoffed "I'm not doing that!" So now they have resorted to buying boy stuff without knowing the gender because "its always a boy" 🤦♀️🙄

I agree. And thank you for your service. Allow me to be devils advocate, none of these fools thought a fire would occur and had no intention to harm people or property. Culpable, are the products/companies made for this one-time, useless activity, and the many people who glamourized it, made it seem harmless. One reason I support imprisonment, is so that a person isn't destroyed by guilt and shamed, one must feel they were punished for a loss of life, property if they are to move on. So she hosted a party. Now it's just people trying to one up eachother

What really gets me is: those people are like small children who all get a balloon to inflate and everyone wants to have the biggest one. But in the end the balloons burst and everyones crying.
My wife is a schoolteacher and did a sort of gender reveal party for her class while pregnant with our first child. After readying the class, she had her assistant toss a single, pink balloon out across the room. The children had mixed reactions but mostly cheered. Unsurprisingly, no one was hurt and the school did not burn to the ground. Gender reveal parties aren't the problem. People being unconscionably careless is.
On top of all that, the original 'gender reveal' party wasn't even about gender, really. It was about celebrating the mother, who had suffered miscarriages in the past, being able to hold a baby long enough for their sex to be determined.
i feel so bad for the first woman, bc she only named it a gender reveal party bc shed had multiple miscarriages before this, and this was her first pregnancy to have reached the point where the gender of the baby could be determined. she just wanted to celebrate a milestone and it turned into all of this. shes spoken out against gender reveal parties so many times but they still keep happening
Crazy how a simple cake cutting meant to celebrate a woman finally being able to tell what gender her child was turned into a trend that caused deaths and multiple wild fires
I was in a Mental Health Residential when the fire from the last fire was burning. Typically, they let the patients out for outdoor time. But during this time, many of them were having asthma attacks, some of us were getting sick from the ash getting in our lungs. It brought down the mood over all. The typical stay was a month in these places. And it was hard not being able to see the sky and go out during the night to see the stars, which was a huge coping skill for me. The sky was a blood orange at times. The grass was covered in gray ashes that had been carried from the fire. But my struggles weren't nearly as harsh as the ones that lost everything and even their lives in the fire. Thank you for the brave people who fought that fire and kept everyone they could safe.
My favourite is the recent one where the Dad blew himself up with a "device made out of a pipe" as the papers put it, while the family were all saying how tragic it was and how they couldn't of seen it coming. Yeah, I also could never of seen how a pipebomb was ever a bad idea.
@@jvccr7533 Well yeah it was incredibly foolish of them, but it is still someone's loved one that died (stupidly, yes) at an event they were all probably enjoying each other until it happened.
One detail that wasn't mentioned was that the couple who had the 'first' gender reveal party (the small, cake one) did so because the woman had I believe miscarried several times and this was the first pregnancy that developed enough to have a detectable gender. But then other people went nuts....
That’s correct. She also no longer supports gender reveals, and that child is now gender nonconforming. What’s really horrible is because of the disasters other people have caused, she gets constant hate mail and threats. All just for trying to celebrate that her child made it that far into the pregnancy.
To think this was all to be a comfort for parents who had suffered through miscarriages and to celebrate a whole baby being born... Not even a healthy baby at that point! A living baby is how low the bar we're putting it. That was the point. It was just to be a comfort for parents who were getting a "rainbow" child after much loss and pain. This movement was intended to be a comfort for families who had suffered tremendous emotionally. The mother has written extensively on how heartbroken she is that people have taken this to the extreme and how she adores her first born, who is gender non conforming. It's about having a living child!
Oh that's just perfect. The first "gender reveal party" and the baby in question is now gender nonconforming. This is why I get annoyed. You aren't finding out the gender of the baby. You're finding out the physical sex. But I guess "sex reveal party" sounds nothing like what's actually going to happen at the party.
@@Luubelaar It's really more a "genitalia reveal" than a gender reveal, but they go by "gender" anyway. Also gives them excuses to tack on more nonsensical gender stereotypes to the party ("blue or pink?" "trucks or tutus?" "guns or glitter?" "sports or shops?")

I hadn't meant to make a sweeping generalization of *everyone* who's excited for that sort of thing, and I apologize if it came off that way. The reason people in the comments are so angry about this is due to the overwhelming damage some gender reveal parties have caused, but those parties in particular were always done in the name of making something bigger and grander than the parties that came before theirs. I.E. going from cakes, to party poppers, to outright making homemade explosives. This sort of thing has nothing to do with gender reveal parties and everything to do with people determined to make a spectacle. If it wasn't celebrating their unborn baby's sex, it would have been the baby shower, the birth announcement, or some other excuse.
A second firefighter died as an indirect result of the El Dorado fire. A friend of the man killed, also a firefighter, ended his life not long after. It's thought that the two events are linked.

Call me cynical, If a gender reveal party would kill the pregnant mother of a twin, it would be world news, even further increasing the popularity of these parties...
Not to mention that most people have nothing like a gender reveal party. They're more concerned with things like being healthy and getting the house ready for the baby. The popularity of showing off your party on social media creates the idea that everyone is doing it.
I haven't even started the video and I'm already horrified that there are enough of these that you were able to fill 11 whole minutes. I don't even get this tradition but if one wants to do it is a cake really not enough?

I live *in* Yucaipa. Here, there’s a lot of support for the family because they were exercising their freedom to congregate during a pandemic. It’s such a backwards town
The gender reveal fire as well as the others that happened at the same time produced so much smoke that the area where I live quite literally had some of the worst air quality on the planet while this was going on. The smoke filled our valley and was so bad the schools, which were just starting to reopen as pandemic restrictions lessened, were shut down because of it. We’ve had many previous incidences of smoke so thick it completely obscured the mountains around us, but this was the worst we’ve had since my family has lived in the area. It turned the sky brown and the sun red; one morning I woke up and looked outside to see that the sunrise looked very similar to those synthwave sun images. It was possible to look directly at the sun for a long time without your eyes hurting. We had to stay inside all the time - no evening walks or relaxing in the backyard - and even then the smell of smoke was pervasive and ever-present. It was horrible. My dad and my sister had it even worse as they both have asthma, and my dad’s lungs took a long time to heal, which was only compounded when he got covid later on (he’s doing fine now, thankfully). The fact that all this was the result of a gender reveal gone wrong was and is beyond sickening to me.
I thought the cake story was going to end with everyone getting food poisoning and three people dying. I had no idea that blowing things up and shrapnel killing relatives or starting massive forest fires resulting in death was ever a part announcing the gender of a baby soon to be born.

More "parties" should be like this! Instead of getting together, catching up, spending time with loved ones for the day, it should be a 1-minute phone call. "Merry Christmas!" "Same to you!" _Click._ Keep it simple!
First time I heard of a gender reveal party was about 10 years ago. A friend of mine said she was going to a “sex party”, to which I responded, “why the hell wasn’t I invited”! When I found out it wasn’t the kind of sex party I was thinking of, I wasn’t so upset about not being invited…
I didn't know the gender of my 3 children until they were born. While I was pregnant, we chose a names for a girl and a boy, so we were prepared for either. My family was quite happy to wait as well. I was definitely more concerned with whether or not my babies were going to be healthy than by what their gender was.
It's all about the attention seeking parents these days. When i was pregnant in 1987, I could have found out my baby's gender through ultrasound but I wanted to wait until my baby was born. I had a girl.
In that last story where the one firefighter dies, it made me think that this man literally lost his life saving people from a fire that was started by some of the most stupid people in existence.

My wife's an ultrasound technician, and whenever she's scanning pregnant women, they ALWAYS trying to find out if it's a boy or girl. My wife is there to scan for heartbeats and to see if the fetus is viable and developing normally. She's like, "These people aren't at all concerned about the health of their unborn child. Or sometimes they're upset they aren't having what they wanted. They don't seem to care that they are having a healthy child." Just be grateful for what you get, a lot of people spend tens of thousands and years just trying to get pregnant. And stop getting people killed just for some social media likes.
Yeah. It's ridiculous to me. I fail to understand why people think other's gender is such a big deal, and I fail to understand how someone could be DISAPPOINTED that their child is a certain gender. It isn't going to change their personality or interests or anything important unless you let society decide.
I agree it is strange to fixate on either having a son versus a daughter, but I think a large part of it is that it gives more breadth to an unborn child like makes it more “real” to the parents to be
I remember my wife asked me whether I was hoping for a boy or a girl. I said I was just hoping for a healthy baby, I didn't care about the rest. As long as it had two arms, two legs but only one head, I'd be happy.
That's like saying people shouldn't hold birthday parties or new year celebrations. Yes, people shouldn't act like idiots and set off bombs during gender reveal parties, but that doesn't mean the parties themselves are the problem. You don't shut down a swimming pool for everyone just because a random moron is peeing in the water. There have been hundreds of thousands of these parties over the past decade, and so far we can pick out fewer than ten serious incidents. That's a better track record than nucelar power, amusement parks, mine shafts, plane journeys, etc.

One of our friend's bfs said "....this probably wasn't a good idea...because what if it was a girl....". Had it been a girl, the recorded video would probably have been destroyed. Kind of turned me off to the whole thing.

My wife and I haven’t even bothered to find out the gender of any of our kids before they were born. There’s something kinda special about going “old school” and not knowing until the birth.
I agree! My niece has decided to do this and I thought it a wonderfully sweet idea. I also noted, in the back of my mind, that there would be no gender reveal party! :D
That damn Yucaipa gender reveal party gave me months of lung and sinuses problems. I lived about 45 miles away from the incident. Everyone I know was basically a shut in except when necessary because of how incredibly hard it was to get that fire put out. It took at least a month. And to think that that fire fighter DIED.
This is why I'm against most safety regulations. Just put something dangerous out for an idiot to find, and let nature take it's course. It usually ends in one less idiot.
I think my favourite gender reveal story was about this woman who announced she got engaged on her sisters wedding day. The bride was a little annoyed by the attention she got but tried not to ruin her day. Once the sisters wedding came round, the bridesmaid (the woman who's wedding was upstaged) decided to get her own back by changing the colour of flowers from white to light blue. The sister was a bit annoyed with the wedding planner for the change. It wasn't until the reception when the bridesmaid announced during the speech to explain the mysterious change was because she was announcing she was pregnant with a baby boy
Announcing your engagement at your sister's wedding is mean. Announcing your pregnancy at your sister's wedding is sweet revenge. Turnabout IS fair play!
Yes! Everyone has the right to feel joy at life's events such as pregnancy and the birth of a child, but the showing off and egocentrism is just too much.
Take your own advice and stop caring if people have gender reveals or not. 99.9% result in some goofy family cutting a pink cake, not tragedy like these ones.

they could've just sliced a cake or pop a balloon like every other family does
Or just not having such low self esteem that one would need to do such things.
I can't imagine the guilt those kids are going to feel when they learn about what happened, even though they are 1000% not at fault.
I haven't even started the video and I'm already horrified that there are enough of these that you were able to fill 11 whole minutes. I don't even get this tradition but if one wants to do it is a cake really not enough?

They only started this a few years ago, apparently one couple did something like this to celebrate their first successful pregnancy and ever since then it's been like weddings in an old rich neighborhood, each person copying the idea but "bigger," using their children to show off their wealth to their friends
These incidents must be standouts. I've been to a few gender reveal parties, and they're pretty uneventful (and safe); just a normal family (and close friends) gathering with a somewhat cartoonish reveal taking up a few minutes in it. A baseball, a cake, etc. I can only imagine the stories in this video were found explicitly by googling to find stories to make gender reveal parties sound bad.

Social media really brings out the worst in people
The gender reveal fire as well as the others that happened at the same time produced so much smoke that the area where I live quite literally had some of the worst air quality on the planet while this was going on.
