My favorite part of this song is Dennis Hopper's storytelling. To this day I still have chills up my spine, as I did when I was a ten year old girl (I was ten when Demon Days was dropped in 2005).

@user-mu6kj8rn8c Yes, holy shit. I write lyrics myself and I just wish I could write like this. The story is so beautifully written, poetic but you can still understand the meaning of it

when I was a kid this had a very heavy presence when I listened to it, more especially because I had no visuals to go with it since I first hear it on my older sister's I pod. But the narration was powerful because I could still imagine the imagery.
And I felt chilling just as those happy monkeys by the end. And at that time it became the most powerful creation of a dark and illuminating story. and it rang through out my head that night and every time I remembered it.

I was super scared of this song as a kid, but I couldn't stop listening to it. Something about the instruments and the story telling aspect fascinated me. Bc I didn't grow up speaking English though, I couldn't understand the song until later. My motivation to learn English originally came from songs like these bc I wanted to decipher their meaning.

A bunch of people here say the song is about the strange folk being businessmen corrupting the town. I believe that's a part of it but I also believe that it's about the people of the town being to happy and never experiencing a negative thing which blinds them to the corruption of the strange folk.

it's about cultural imperialism, about the USA raping this world's culture, land, people, traditions, history. and how after all that greed they are causing the world to crumble and die. Yeah, The USA delivered violence all over the world, from the middle east to Asia to Africa to all of America. violence, violence. and that violence is gonna blow back right into the USA's face. they will be the last standing of course. but the USA caused the world to be like this. we could be happy. but some people want empires and violence and to put a bullet in everything decent. that's what the song is about :3

When I pictured this song, I saw soldiers with tactical gear and sunglasses, hidden from the peaceful villagers in a Valentine's of shadow, and when I heard the villager's nightmare scene, I thought these peaceful people were in an afterlife bound to the mountain. For me, It was about the greed of the wealthy and the loss of innocence...

    • @brendaluv2017

It wasn’t just the strange ones at fault here, there were some faults in the happy people too. The Happy people were so isolated from the world they were ignorant enough to not noticed what the strange ones were doing, and when fear came they let it prevent them from actually going into the 🏔 mountain to see what was really going on. They didn’t listen to their get/the sense of dread that was telling them what was happening to their mountain ⛰. The lesson out of this: if isolation is left long enough the disaster will catch up to them. (That’s how I see it.)

    Lyrics
Once upon a time at the foot of a great mountain
There was a town where the people known as Happyfolk lived
Their very existence a mystery to the rest of the world
Obscured as it was by great clouds
Here they played out their peaceful lives
Innocent of the litany of excess and violence
That was growing in the world below
    To live in harmony with
The spirit of the mountain called Monkey was enough
Then one day Strangefolk arrived in the town
    They came in camouflaged
Hidden behind dark glasses and no one noticed them
    They only saw shadows
You see without the truth of the eyes
    The Happyfolk were blind
Falling out of aeroplanes and hiding out in holes
Waiting for the sunset to come people going home
Jump out from behind them and shoot them in the head
    Now everybody dancing
    The dance of the dead
    The dance of the dead
    The dance of the dead
In time Strangefolk found their way
Into the higher reaches of the mountain
And it was there that they found the caves
    Of unimaginable sincerity and beauty
    By chance they stumbled upon
The place where all good souls come to rest
    The Strangefolk they coveted
The jewels in these caves above all things
And soon they began to mine the mountain
It's rich seam fueling the chaos of their own world
    Meanwhile down in the town
The Happyfolk slept restlessly their dreams Invaded by shadowy figures
    Digging away at their souls
Every day people would wake and stare at the mountain
Why was it bringing darkness into their lives?
And as the Strangefolk mined deeper and deeper into the mountain
    Holes began to appear
Bringing with them a cold and bitter wind
That chilled the very soul of the Monkey
For the first time the Happyfolk felt fearful for
They knew that soon the Monkey would stir from it's deep sleep
    Then there came a sound
Distant first it grew into castrophany
So immense that it could be heard far away in space
There were no screams there was no time
The mountain called Monkey had spoken
    There was only fire
    And then nothing
Oh a little town in the USA
The time has come to see
There's nothing you believe you are
But where were you when it all came down on me?
    Did you call me? no

Personal idea about this song that i havnt seen anyone mention, but as strange as it may be i actually think this could be about the towns used as targets in the nevada desert during the atomic bomb trials. The fact that "there was no screams" and the interference of people in camos make me think it was there. At the start it states that they were "obscured by clouds" which i think could represent nuclear fallout

For those wondering: this song is about colonialism in general, but, its calling attention to massacres that happened in the name of pilgrimage throughout history.
The one that comes to mind for me (and why this song makes me cry) is what the british did to native americans. They came, they saw, they erased native culture and lives for profit and STILL do.
We are too apathetic to what capitalism has done to our planet and souls. It needs to end.

As a kid I had a childrens book. It told the story of a colony of mice who lived on an island. One day a mouse finds a stone glittering gold (in the book all the golden stones were made out of plastic gold foil). He takes it out to the other mice and shows them where he found the stone and soon a goldrush begins. Now you could choose between two stories: One in which the mice start ravaging the mountain of their island, taking out more and bigger stones until their caves are full of gold stones and the mountain holier than a swiss cheese. Or the the other story, in which the mouse who found the first stone slows the other mice and reminds them that they should give back to the mountain. He uses a sharp stone to carve a sun into a stone the size of the gold he took out of the mountain and brings it back to the place he took the gold from. The others follow his lead and they decide, that everyone should have some gold, but to always give back to the mountain. In both stories a storm begins and while in the second story all the mice are sheltered in their caves with their golden stones, giving them light in the dark, in the first ending the storm breaks down the mountain, which collapses ontop of the mice. They are now exposed to the elements and all their gold is not helping them. The mouse who found the first stone quitely begins to carve a sun into a stone, while trying to take cover under some boulders left from their mountain.
I always have to think about this story when I listen to this song, which is probably my favourite Gorillaz song (maybe Desole or El Manana are also my favourites).

The ending gives me a chilling feeling but at the same time it's like a melancholic feeling and it makes you think, it's not a bit complicated to explain

I’d like to see an animated short one day that is just this story
Just the visualization of the final words would be a hell of a thing to see
“There were no screams, there was no time. The mountain called monkey had spoken. There was only fire. and then, nothing”

For me this song is a life lesson on what greed actually does. It only brings unhappiness and hurt and slaughter.
The Mountain named Monkey is a metaphor for our life

I love reading peoples thoughts on this song. I think they're all right. every time I listen to this song each factor symbolizes something different. the happy folk are always a different type of people, the monkey always symbolizes something new. the stand folks intensions are always led by new fixation. but the story remains the same. CHILLING. when I was young my dad told me to pay attention to this song for it was his favorite of the gorillas and I think to this day its my favorite song ever. really good story telling and emotion put into it.

I think I first listened to this when I was around 8 or 10 and only saw the story about some nice people and some creepy monsters who erupted a volcano. But now, Jesus Christ this is dark.

We watched this at my school a year ago or two ago. It was about who's side would be like if the happy folk deserved their island, or if the other side should have taken the mountain.
It was really cool hearing this

What this song means to me is that no one in this world can make a decision that doesn't affect someone else for good or bad. People say "It's my life! It's my decision! I can do as I please!" Yes, you'd be right on all three counts. Live you're life how you please but don't dismiss or be ignorant of the fact that others will be affected by the decisions we make. If you choose not to care, also your choice but don't pretend that no one will be affected by it.

it sounds like they lived near a dormant volcano, then when people began to mine at the thing, someone must have hit a gas or lava pocket or something and caused it to go active once more.

Los nativos veian como deidad a su montoña, cuando fue invadida por la gente extraña y hecha mella a favor de los recursos minerales en ella, la deidad estalló contra los extraños que nada hicieron por respetar aquella cultura.

I used to think that this song was meant to represent war, the happy folk are innocent civilians, the strange folk were soldiers or the enemy country, midway through the track the civilians realised what was going and and “the monkey” is a nuclear bomb (Hiroshima, Pearl Harbour, ect)
