- If you had to name one snack from the Midwest, there’s no doubt the answer would be popcorn. States like Illinois and Indiana are among the nine major popcorn producing states in the popcorn belt region. Named the official snack food of Illinois, popcorn is a big deal in the Midwest.
Shops like Garrett’s and Nuts on Clark even have designated storefronts all over the state. We head out to Preferred Popcorn, a collective of farms in Indiana that plants 100 million pounds of popcorn every year. These carefully selected kernels are later made into popcorn at shops like Nuts on Clark. We get an inside look at both the planting and making process of the popular snack.

The farmer is so kind and happy to share knowledge. I know it's an interview, but you can tell he has a great sense of humour and loves what he does.

Over 50 years ago, growing up in rural Kansas, I had an elementary school pal who’s family grew popcorn. When I was invited out to play, we often went to the field, cut off a few ears, went back to his house to shuck and hull - then popped it in butter and oil in a cast iron pot. What a fond memory!

This man has devoted his whole life for this and yet movie theaters still be hella stingy with the butter
I worked in a movie theater. The butter flavoring we used was also the salt. We would sometimes add extra flavor but people would complain it was too salty. That's why we have the fake butter dispensers. Add to your heart's content.

@@OXIR the cinema probs doesnt make the butter flavouring on its own and buys it from another company, so its quite hard for them to control how much salt is in the butter
@@fuhlvee5555 The salt actually comes from an additive they use, called Flavacol. It’s what gives the popcorn it’s yellow/orange color. I bought Flavacol off of Amazon, and it really does make the popcorn movie theaterish..

Popcorn is the coolest snack. As a kid, I still remember being amazed when I first heard that corn popping in the pot, and then soon afterwards, discovered that the pot was filled to the top with all of those delicious, fluffy-white, crunchy clouds. Add a little butter and salt ... snack-time perfection!
always loved popcorn, actually own my own commercial grade popcorn maker so I can make the same stuff theaters do. it's awesome!

I’ve heard horror stories of people falling into silos and drowning in the corn.
Yeah that used to happen sometimes where I live but it happens less because they give people around 2 minutes of oxygen if they fall in so they have enough time to pull them out
My cousin actually died that way. Farming is dangerous

I grew up in the corn belt and every year we had farm safety day for everyone and we learned never to step down in the silos of corn because it will pull you down

6:00 I really hope that farmer warned her that entering a bin full of grain is incredibly dangerous. It can be like quick sand and if you go under you will suffocate. We only enter from the top when it needs leveling to fill properly, otherwise that's a big nope.
Let's all appreciate the farmers who do what they do so we don't have to. I love you guys, thank you for keeping us fed :) If they quit, we'd all be screwed.

We raise a bunch of popcorn in south central Nebraska and it all goes to con Agra in Hamburg, Iowa. It is all Vogel seed in this scenario. More recently we have been raising Orville Resenbacher white popcorn. In the past we have raised some mushroom kernel style for crunch ‘n munch. It is a picky plant compared to regular field corn, it is also very heavy so if you get in it in a bin like they were in the video you will feel extra pressure on your legs compared to normal corn. Also what Con Agra does is they prefer it dry as they can rehydrate it for popping, it’s not something you can dry down traditionally. Also a standard semi load of popcorn hauls somewhere around 400,00+ microwave bags worth popcorn if I remember back to a calculation. Consider that going down the road, that’s $1-$1.50 each at a hotel, it’s a wonder we don’t have armed guards hauling it. However, farmers are paid a premium over traditional corn price so that is all end producer margin. At the Hamburg facility each load brought in is tested for volume like shown, thanks he popped corn is then bagged and taken across the street and given to the elementary school.

My first job was working at a movie theater and in all that time, somehow, I never ever got sick of the smell of fresh popcorn. Even when it stuck to my clothes after work. It's just such a pleasing smell. Now BURNT popcorn is horrible.

I can attest *Madison, Wisconsin has some serious popcorn from the theaters to kettle corn to the infamous Chicago Garrett's popcorn.* Real butter NOT margarine makes a world of a difference, too.

3:24 I didn’t know a forage harvester could collect the corn I thought they all shred it into chaff but this one must be special
And he can get wet corns in to dry corns i litarly want a harvester like this.
The video before looks like sweet corn being harvested as the corn tassels look fresh and the stalks are green.
3:21 I didn't see how it automatically strips it all off the cob as it comes off the plant. Wonder is it works like a chicken plucker or something.
Is it harvested only after the corn is dried out in the field? Or is it different entirely from fresh corn in the supermarkets, with the kernels soft and juicy? Otherwise it would seem it's going to get corn mash rather than kernels.

fine stuff! I pop & eat small servings daily, keep a sealed bowl for whenever, thru the day. Took my popper on
backpacks, too. Theater popcorn? No!. Only butter & salt, please. I have a fine air popper now, pop corn dry,
don't mess it up! Add only butter & salt. Put it, popped, into cold milk, spoon it up! You will see. BTW: microwave

@@pphedup What? Pretty sure there is no germ that can survive 400 degrees in a cooker. It's not the germs they are checking for, it's stuff like small rocks that are the same size and weight as corn. I get them from time to time. But they are easy to see when you pour it into the cooker. I've been doing it professionally for five years, and caught three small rocks. Their quality control is good.
