I couldn't live without an elevator or in building laundry, but that's just me. What are non-negotiables for you guys when searching for a new apartment?? I'm curious to see what priorities other people have!
At my age, the elevator and in-building laundry would be musts, and I'd even hope for my own laundry machines. A kitchen with counter space, at least one good-sized closet, and some kind of view would help tip the scale. Most Manhattan apartments include heat, but not necessarily electricity. All your research paid off because you got a lot for your money.
I lived in Hell's Kitchen in the 1980s in my mid 30s. Fifth floor walk up, tub in kitchen, railroad flat. $285. So 10x today. Back of building, quiet. Skyline view to south. Only had 15 amps of electricity, still had pipes in ceiling for gas light. But, there is nothing like living in Manhattan, even if for a short time. True then, true now. The stairs gave me shapely legs. You ran into John Lennon and Andy Warhol on the street. Good luck with all your enterprises.
Congrats on your successful apartment search and signing a lease! 🎉 Some great advice in this video, like don't sign anything if you feel rushed or pressured. Also, don't discount your gut. Looking forward to future NYC videos!
I understand the appeal and convenience of Manhattan living, but I would be looking at the boroughs as well, other than Brooklyn, for affordability. You will have to deal with tradeoffs and compromises. Although I commute to Manhattan daily to my job I am in a really nice neighborhood in northeast Queens, which has been an absolute blessing. Good luck in your search.
You should go to NYC Housing Honnect and create a profile. Once create a profile, you can click apply to many of the lotteries for units in newly constructed buildings. It's great because the units are income based. Still apply because you don't know tomorrow. You can always reject units. That's how I got my apartment and I am content. There are no fees.
Years ago I had this dream and I did it for 10 years. I enjoyed ever moment. But, the cost was getting ridiculous and I didn’t have any tax write offs. Therefore, moved back to NJ and still enjoyed NYC by taking a train for 30:minutes one way. Plus I purchased a condo for a write off. Enjoy your life in NYC…..
Congrats on your NY apartment. Mayabe I'll see you when I'm in NY Oct 3-9, doing museums and going to NY City Ballet at Lincoln Center. Staying at a mid town Holiday Inn. Good luck!!!
Thank you for sharing. Kips Bay on top of the midtown tunnel would have been a huge nightmare! Good call. Congratulations on your new apartment. I wish you all the luck in NYC💗
Remember everyone you can also always look at other boroughs New York isn't just Manhattan and rents can be lower if you look elsewhere. This is definitely not saying Marcos shouldn't want to or shouldn't live in Manhattan because ofc it is an iconic part of the city with amazing things to do but the city is also made of 5 boroughs, not just one which is helpful to keep in mind for those that don't need to necessarily be close to jobs and want more (sort of) for your money. ☺
I find it interesting that people don't take the first apartment if they like it. My last place I lived, it was the first space I looked at and rented it right away. I lived there 12 years until the landlord sold the building. I started looking in December for a new place and moved January 1st into the first place I looked at and am still here after a year and a half. I love it here! 1930's Art Deco building. So much character. I could be here for another 12 years!!
Did your apartment have a broker's fee? Seemed to be a great deal considering utilities included. Was the internet also included or no? Finally, when you are applying for all these apartments, are they each checking your credit upon application? I was thinking that was a lot of credit checks! Thanks for sharing your journey.
No problems thanks for watching! The apartment did have a 1 month brokers fee (sadly) and Internet not included. Furthermore each application did check my credit but I only applied to three so it didn't impact my credit score at all!
Great analysis of different options for you-and what's available. You seemed to grab the best deal going-and I cringe as I say "deal" at 3K/month. hahaha It's NYC, it is what it is. Utilities included? Awesome! And all on crutches.....damn!
Long island City is good. Hell Kitchen is a nice area too. Theres this condo at hell kitchen 49st 8ave near 50st Subway station. Subway station just down from the condo.
It was a rent controlled apartment that her grandmother had and she was living there illegally so they had cheap rent, otherwise it would probably be 6000 as he saying
I have a large one-bedroom for $1800 elevater & laundry clean & nice quiet neighborhood -but been here 20 years. - young people are suckers & they don't know how to demand affordable prices for housing
Hey Marcos love you're new pad. Living in NYC...what a adventure for you. Great times are ahead for you. New York is one place that has a lot going on 24/7/365. Best of luck with everything bro. It's good that you found an apartment that fits your criteria and in your price range! It seems you did well in your search! Well done, Marcos! Your vlog made me happy I don't have rent or a mortgage payment! My cardboard box under the bridge is so nice! Jk! Take care and looking forward to more of your vids from the Big Apple!

I pay 710.00 a month for a large, 1-bedroom apartment....but it's definitely not in NYC. That's ok; I'll just visit soon and get a feel for the city and have some fun (with pepper spray and "Birdie" ready). Crime is Everywhere. First time I've viewed your vlog. Get out and show us stuff - not all sitting on couch and talking. God bless- you'll do well.
You're actually always on the go 😅 phew. I would commute to save on rent. But that's just me. Also i get it, commuting takes time. So yeah. All the best for big city living. I hope you're going to be happy (or at the very least, comfortable and safe) Lots of support for you, as always 🤗
Marcos's saga is one familiar to readers of the NY Times Real Estate section (which probably does not include many in the target demographic of this channel). When these stories have happy endings, it is often due to some strange circumstance; after about the 14 minute mark, I wondered if Marcos would get a prime unit about to be vacated by another alum of the Cal swimming team. Apparently not. Perhaps a future vlog will illustrate a saga familiar to the readers of the NY Times Style section: the search for a mate.
I couldn't live without an elevator or in building laundry, but that's just me. What are non-negotiables for you guys when searching for a new apartment?? I'm curious to see what priorities other people have!
I mean it depends on where you're living in the building. I could survive on the third floor just fine, but certainly not on the 12th floor.
it's all about lighting, I'm still in university and I miss the natural light!!
