It was so weird that Lorelei was going to MARRY Max but he didn’t have a key to her house, he had never even spent the night until they were about to get married! And she admitted she didn’t think about how their life would be as a married couple or if he should help raise Rory. Like did she even like max???

To me it feels like she loved the idea of max and of being married, but hadn’t thought down the road at all! And then then it got close she realized, maybe even after that conversation with Luke and was forced to think ahead and panicked

Lorelai wasn’t ready for any adult, committed relationship with anyone. It was so hard to watch her emotional arrested development at times. :( She had horrible communication skills, commitment/trust issues; and her jumping in bed with chris every time, was sickening. Directly affected how Rory handled her own relationships.

Agreed! I really hated how she would run back to Chris all the time! It really feels like they summed that up so well in the "you're the one i want to want" line! That really is how it felt, she always wanted to want Chris so she kept going back to him! Thanks for your thoughts!

The discrepancy in maturity level is pretty much the same between Max and Lorelai, and Lorelai and Chris. However Lorelai never cut Chris the same slack Max did cut her. Now, I feel like Christopher always kinda was the backup, the one person that knew her better than most people and the one she could spend some (romantic) hours with, without seriously worrying about it getting serious. Maybe she really wanted it at times, but for the most part he was just a save option (which I‘ve see happening irl with people who were in serious longterm relationships when they were young). For the randos: we don’t hear much about her love life in her younger years, except when she goes to talk to Anna Nardini and tells her, that she had a Sister Wendy phase as well, where she pretended not to date anyone, I feel like it was good that she dated a bit, after Rory was old enough to understand. I kind of like that she got a chance to experience dating around, something that she very likely didn’t have in her teens or twenties. I feel like Jason is quite similar to Christopher and Lorelai: bad relationship with his parents, not really into „their world“. The difference is that Jason decided to take a different path than his father way later in life. I think he was still an immature bachelor type, who convinced Lorelai to go out with him because it would upset her mom - I mean come on, that relationship was doomed to begin with. Luke was always there for her and for Rory, and I love that he worked on himself when he realized, that he wanted to be in a relationship with Lorelai. I hate that he started to act really immature and toxic in season seven, but ok, it is what it is - they got there in the end 😅 Also I always wondered how old Luke is? I mean he is Liz‘ older brother and Jess is the same age as Rory. However there was never any mention that Liz got pregnant super young, or even as a teenager. Because surely her and Lorelai would have bonded over that!? So Luke must be quite a few years older than Lorelai, but that is just never mentioned…

    • @AVintageJoy
      @AVintageJoy  2 роки тому +7

Wow! Two really good points I hadn't thought of. I think you're so right about the Max to Lorelai is Lorelai to Chris. I think that's a perfect description! Two, I really hadn't thought about the age gap or even if there was one between Luke and Lorelai. I guess Luke could be only like a year older than liz and liz could have had Jess young, even though we never really heard about it really. IDK that's a really good point. I'll have to do more research to see if I can do the math on that.

I always assumed Luke was around 10 years older than Lorelei, maybe a bit less. He had already renovated the hardware store into the dinner by the time she shows up in Stars Hollow making him in his early 20's to Lorelei's late teens. The timeline is a bit fuzzy but I wouldn't be surprised if it took Lorelei a couple of years to have enough disposable income to make her way over to Luke's as a regular considering she was living/working at the Inn and getting most of her and Rory's meals there.

When he and Lorelei start dating, he mentions they met 8 years before, so Rory would have been around 10 and Lorelei about 25. His sister was not living in Stars Hollow (she & Jess were in a city somewhere) so they probably wouldn’t have met, and given how he describes her as troubled, she could have been 17 or 18 when she had Jess. Luke may be 5 or 6 years older than Lorelei, and started the dinner in his mid -to-late twenties.

I sooo didn't like Max, I think he fits the nice guy trope, I think he would have become more and more controlling after marriage. Maybe it's not a coincidence they cast an actor who played villains before. I also didn't like Christofer cause he just wanted to play dad, not to really be dad. @@AVintageJoy I think he had this fixed image about Lorelai. Not that Lorelai is the most flexible character, but she at least admits that she wants things the way she wants them. Max was never relaxed or showed real emotion, he was always so tense and more like pretending to have emotion, as if he was acting up something he's seen in a movie. He was playing this role of "oh, i am the corruptable nerd, i am the smart educated one (as if someone would have taken back his diploma if he had a bit of fun), i am the one who worships you and gives in to your every whim. I am a romantic and look, i tell you bs stories i invented about my uncle". But he wasn't all that, he was just waiting to put a ring on it so that he can really begin to dictate how things are gonna go. And as soon as he put a ring on it, he suddenly wanted to control Rory too, even tho i think it was way too soon for him to have anything to say about her, he wasn't her adoptive father yet, not even close. I think he had that mentality of "i own my woman and tell her what she can or can't do". I'm pretty sure he would have banned them both from Luke's soon enough. To me he looked intimidated by Lorelai, she was like this wild creature that if he could tame, he would prove to himself that he's not just a nerd or something. As if, if this of all women will fall for him, the sky is the limit. Even his proposal was just a way for him to gain control over the situation, it wasn t romantic. But he did pretend like it's this amazing thing in one of his books that he's always wanted to do. Of course, this is just how i see it, i get that others might see him differently. If i did a shot every time I saw a red flag with him, I'd be drunk 🤭

I have watched this show more than 100 times all the way through 🫠 and There is a chance my opinion on this may change one day.
But I don’t think anything was wrong with max. I think something was wrong with Lorelai! She is very entertaining throughout the show but as a person she’s kinda awful the first few seasons. She makes fun of diabetes on the very first episode. She’s constantly making fun of Diseases/Disabilities.
Max was a well rounded kind person and she was a child. He barely knew her and fell so fast for his new students mother! It was just very creepy to me. & then he barely dated her a year and he proposes.
I think he was way too good for her!
Lorelai in the later episodes would have worked with him.
So to summarize (I tend to ramble 😅) their relationship was uncomfortable to watch because it felt like a student teacher relationship. Her mental intelligence wasn’t on the same level as his. And it felt like a train wreck. I think she agreed to marry him because her relationship life was a mess.

I think Max rushed everything but in any case Lorelai couldn't love him because she secretly hoped to rebuild a family with Chris. It's not a case she calls him during her hen party. Lorelai moves on when Chris has a baby with Sherry and becomes the father he has never been for Rory. It's the reason why It doesn't work after the break up with Luke..like Lorelai says, it's not just for Luke, Chris wasn't the one because he has disappointed Lorelai so many times because he has never been there for her or for Rory, like Luke.

Yeah I wish he had figured it out before, but there are times when we see them both mess us the relationship between Luke and Lorelai, I wish once they had gotten together we had just seen them mature together and have a real stable and fun relationship. I think from that side we would feel differently about the "before luke realizes" time period. Also for Christ yea I do actually agree with you. I think if they had not met other people in their lives maybe they would have ended up together. I think Chris really did and does love Lorelai, I just think once Lorelai met and realized she liked Luke, christopher was no longer a real option for her in her mind even though she tries to make him the "one she wants to want".

Why is Digger no good for Lorelai? I don't see anything mentioned other than his decorating and his dog. One could say similar things about Luke: 1) his decorating was horrid, 2) his life routine and daily schedule-- going to bed so early, rising so early-- was entirely NOT in harmony with Lorelai's, 3) he hates coffee and thinks its bad for you, 4) he also hates the unhealthy eating Lorelai loves, 5) hates tv, 6) doesnt enjoy movies. These are the rock basis for Lorelai's leisure time: tv and movies... Sure, he was steady and supportive-- like Dean for Rory-- but there has to be more than that.
Digger had the exact same family background. That's a big importance in a marriage: common roots. He, like Lorelai, hated the cold parenting style and had serious issues with his parents-- as did she. Like Lorelai, he rebels against his family. Like Lorelai, he: 1) loves coffee, 2) drinks alcohol, 3) loves junk food (snowballs), 4) runs a business that closes in the evening, not late at night, 5) his job can give weekends off (Luke works six, likely SEVEN days a week), 6) has quirks like she does, 7) talks fast and can "keep up", 8) funny sense of humor.
I will say that there wasn't much chemistry shown, but I blame that on the acting, not the character. Lorelai herself says to Digger "I liked us as a couple too". That seems genuine. I'm open for hearing your thoughts on this.

    • @malloryweeks3306

I liked Digger. He was a good guy. I agree that after he sued Richard that they shouldn’t have been a couple. I don’t think that they should have told Emily and Richard about them dating, or at least that they should have made it into a big deal. I liked that he had his little quirks about not sleeping in the same bed or whatever. I don’t think that they would have been end game but I still liked them as a couple.
I love Luke and wish that they were married in the reboot. He understands her and goes along with whatever little bit that she is doing. He is a stable person and is there for her and Rory for everything they need. I think it would have been cool for Lorelei to have actually been pregnant with twins like her dream from season 3 instead of the whole long lost daughter thing that they did.
I could add more but will leave it like this for now. I hope this made sense

With Christopher, the way I recently came to see it was that Lorelai slightly ruined his chances to be a parental figure to Rory. When she ran away from home she infringed on his parental rights, even the rights of the grandparents. He would have either been off to college or about to leave when she ran away. After college, Rory would have been used to the the lifestyle she was living, so Chris would have had difficulty to get close to her. He still has his own life too. Lorelai running away would have sent a message that any others would not be accepted. He was not part of Rory’s world, so he had trouble connecting with her.
We never really see Christopher’s side of what happened through the series. We be see the story progress through Rory and Lorelei’s lenses, so all we know is their anger and apathy towards him. We do not know how he tried to connect to them before. We do not know if there were attempts at shared parenting. Christopher is such a blank space character. Do we know his interests, his job, how he acts outside of his relationship with Rory and Lorelai? Do we even know how he is with just Rory, because they share very little screen time together without anyone else.

    • @AVintageJoy
      @AVintageJoy  2 роки тому +3

Yeah I think you're really right that we don't really get to learn about Chris as a character outside of just how Lorelai and Rory view him. We don't even really see him interact with Sherrie much at all. I wish we knew more about how it all went down with Lorelai and Chris, because like you said, there are so many blank spaces. Like, did she call Chris and tell him where she was going or that she was leaving or did she just go by herself, because if she did that I think you're correct in that she took away his chance of being a father figure in Rory's life, especially when she was very young.

Also, was Lorelei unintentionally/intentionally tainting Rory’s opinions of Christopher and others from high society? The story shows that Lorelei has strong opinions about that aspect of her life and she mocks the things that her parents and those from high society does. She ran away from home because she did not want that lifestyle, so it is not outside the realm of possibility that Rosy was tainted against the people from that world because of things and actions that Lorelei does. Rory is a mini Lorelei, and she does admire her, so she probably learned that what Lorelei was doing and saying was acceptable. If I s shown later in Rory’s college years that she does have strong feelings against the privilege of the high society despite being an active member of it, and she does not even register the hypocrisy of what she is saying until it is pointed out to her. So how much of it is a learned behavior?
Rory is a mini Lorelei. The only notable differences between them is that Rory is slightly more serious and more studious. They share the same interest in foods, music, shows and more. They have the same quippy reactions to what people say. Rory really mimics her mother and what she says, and the show never has her question it. Even when she is away from her mother she never really explores who she is or what she likes.
This is my personal opinion. Was Lorelei a good mother to Rory? My answer was no. I felt that Lorelei was trying too hard to be Rory’s friend than her mother. Rory seems to reign herself in more than her mother does, so when Lorelei tries to punish her or try to draw attention to her faults, Rory finds it questionable when she does. Plus, I find Rory’s childhood so questionable, that I find it hard to believe that Child Services would not have been called on Lorelei. She raise Rory in a tool shed, with pointed, sharp objects which Rory or her could have gotten tetanus from. A tool shed, which would not have any insulation or supplies to fend off severe weather. She raised Rory to have unhealthy eating habits by eating so much junk food and coffee. Rory could have gotten really sick by eating like that.
The story tries too hard to villanize Christopher. One of the main points against him is that he is infrequent about how much he is in their lives, but at one point in the story it mentions that he lives in Boston. We do not know how much he contacts them or they contact him. We do not know if he does not call, we do not know the frequency of his calls, or the frequency of his visits (if their were some that happened of screen.) Another thing is when we were introduced to his character. He comes into town riding a motorcycle and invites Rory on a ride and Lorelei disagreed to it. We are suppose to see it as him being reckless, but Rory is 16 and should know how to be safe on those types of vehicles and Christopher would have been riding that for a while, so how is it him being reckless to invite his daughter for a ride. We do not know if there was a formal custody agreement, or how much of his rights as a parent he was aware of. Going back to Lorelei running away, did she inform Christopher that she was leaving? Did she tell him where she was going? Did she leave any contact information? Was he made aware about of major events in Rory’s life.

Like I had said previously, we do not see much about Christopher throughout the series. We do not know what his personality is like (outside of Interactions between Rory and Lorelei), we do not now what he does for work, and we do not know if there were reasons why he would not interact with the Gilmore Girls throughout the show. Off the top of my head, there would be excuses for why Christopher would not be in their lives for Rory’s first few years. When Lorelei leaves, I would place Rory near a few months old, so Lorelei would be near the end of high school. Christopher would than be about to go off into college, and (depending on the type of degree) he would be gone for a few years. Since we do not know what degree he went for in college, we do not know if there were career opportunities near where Lorelei and Rory were. (I have known people who had to leave the state to find jobs because they could not use their degree.) It was stated in his character profile that he lived in Boston, so his job must be in Boston. By the time he had the capability to be part of her life in a meaningful way, Rory would have grown used to her lifestyle in Stars Hollow.
We do not know if there were any formal/informal arrangements that are between Lorelei and Christopher in regards to Rory, such as custody or child support. Your argument of co-parenting works on the premise that he willingly chose to not co-parent or do custodial arrangements, but we do not know if there are reasons why they did not have them, or they stopped because of reasons. We do not know any other obligations that Christopher has that could prevent him from meeting Rory, such as work or his family. The only things that we do know are what the show shows us, or how Lorelei feels about it.
While Christopher has his part in how his relationship with Rory went, so did Lorelei. When she made decisions regarding Rory, was he informed. Was Christopher invited to events in Rory’s life. Was he made aware of the potential step-father’s when Lorelei got into serious relationships. When Lorelei took Rory to Stars Hollow was Christopher made aware. The nuances of the Christopher, Rory, Lorelei dynamic are based on things that are not shown.

He had a lot of expectations for the relationship, and was a romantic, but not a pragmatist. Firstly, I think how he asked Lorelai out was unprofessional. The show seems to gloss over that, making it about Rory, when in reality Max just went for what he wanted without any consideration how that might affect his work life (AKA Rory).

Christopher just sucks as a dad. He was never there for Rory and one evening alone with Gigi he`s like help Lorelei the nanny has the night off I´m alone with my own child omg help. As soon as Sherry was ready he dropped her off in Paris by Gigi no more burden on Christopher. I´m sure this time around he paid child support.

Unpopular opinion, I don’t think Luke and Lorelai had much in common nor do I think they were good for each other :( There was an episode where Lorelai was questioning her love for pop tarts and whether she truly loves them or she just loves them because her mother would hate the fact that she did. And she proceeded to wear her hair up, which her mother complimented, and suggested that she wear it to the cotillion which she proceeded to not do because her mothers liked it. I feel like this is the case with Luke and Chris. I do think Lorelai and Luke had amazing chemistry, but I feel like she was forcing Luke to be someone he was not. We know he struggles with love and relationships, he was listening to podcasts and reading self love books- which she mocked when she noticed the book Jess was reading. She wasn’t mature enough for Luke and was forcing him to heal at a faster pace than he could. Because I do think Luke had a lot of healing and growing to do which he was aware of, we see this all throughout the series, and I feel as though Luke didn’t have the best childhood. We can also see this further conveyed in Liz’ character, constantly falling for the wrong guy just all in all having a tough time with love which leads me to believe they didn’t have the best childhood. Personally I think Lorelai and Christopher had more in common, they were both stubborn, self-absorbed and immature with no real awareness for other peoples feelings. But I do think they were more suited, Lorelai wanted gifts and grand gestures- whereas Luke was more of a homebody, I feel like Luke’s love language was more acts of services and quality time. Lorelai and both Chris, preferred gifts, words of affirmation, quality time and etc. I did love Lorelai and Luke, I think they were both good for each other at some points but her forceful nature and just wanting to be involved in everything and wanting things done at Lorelai’s time is what caused the conflict in season 6. I personally think Anna and Luke would’ve been the perfect match, the scene where she said something along the lines of “the diner looks great by the way, I was here when you opened it remember” gave me the feeling that Anna knew Luke more than Lorelai ever did to be honest. She had seen the blood sweat and tears that went into the making of Luke Danes, but I don’t think Lorelai ever did. Just my thoughts! Loved the video ❤

I do agree with some of what you said. I love Luke and Lorelei as a couple. I don’t like that he didn’t tell her about April. That was really the only thing that he did that I didn’t really like. I didn’t like their communication issues that they had either. I feel like Lorelei and Chris were better as friends than a couple. I agree that she kept him in the back of her mind because to her they knew each other so well and grew up together that she just saw them as a couple when they got older. She was slightly more mature in the way that she knew they wouldn’t last as teenagers getting married.

    Personality type speculation:
    Lorelai - ENFP
    Luke - ISFJ
    Chris - ESFP
    Digger - ENTP
    Max- ESFJ
Per Socionics her idea mate would be an ISTJ, but not sure if he she ever got to date one in the show. Ironically, that's Rory's type.

Max... Do not forget that she was willing to 'compromise' with him. Big plus. She was and has been fairly mature enough to be with Max... But the biggest thing is that she Didn't love him as she told Rory at that B&B. Christopher, YIKES! She has always been way more mature than Christopher throughout the series. Then they did marry and she shows how mature she is with him... When she has to tell him "We're married. If you need space - you walk around the block. You go get a beer." With him disappearing like that... "I needed you." "The worst part of it was... When you weren't there. Part of me wasn't surprised." Case closed. Jason... No! No! No! And No! Immature, wrong mindset with wanting to get back at his dad... Luke! Yeah! I was saying Lor!!! to each and every time "Do you see her face?" lol The biggest thing I didn't care for Luke is when he didn't tell Lor about April. But here's a thing - sometimes people do listen to those whom they ask advice from! Let us not forget Luke actually asks her for a character reference; Thee Best Character reference I've ever heard! Let us not forget that they kiss at the last moment in the last episode of the series; presumably making up. And once more - it wasn't a reboot! :) GG: YitL

I also agree that she was willing to compromise with Max which is good, but I don't like that she didn't love him but agreed to marry him. I don't get that. Also with Chris I too feel she's more mature than he was. Bleh lots of dating ups and down with Lorelai for sure!!

I understand that they were in a confusing patch and he shouldn’t have lied to her but I mean come on, what if you realized you had a daughter pitter pattering in the world for 12 years? I think it was inevitable that they would break up and get back together but why did she have to cheat on him?!! I feel terrible for his poor little heart. He did love her so so much with all his heart.💔

Absolutely not! Lol. Sorry, but Lorelai was far too insecure, selfish, and vain to be anyone's partner period. Same with Rory. They both had deep-rooted issues that made them both toxic partners, and they both took more than they gave. A relationship is 50/50, and they cared far too much about what others could do and provide for them, not about the partners themselves. I found them both to be toxic on a variety of levels, and as I've mentioned too in another one of your videos, Rory was very much treated as if she could do no wrong. It made her very superior and vain in her life, both as a teenager and as an adult. Lorelai was seen by Emily and sometimes Richard as well, as if she could do nothing right. That made her insecure and needy, always searching for greener grass, never satisfied with a thing. She even treated Sookie like she was never good enough. All in all, for very different reasons, they both were never satisfied unless and until they found a guy they could walk all over and treat like trash because of both of their upbringings, no matter how different they were, were incredibly and insanely toxic. The proper way to raise a child is to let them know they're good enough, but also to know that it's okay to make mistakes in life without being bashed for it or allowing your parent to blame another person for YOUR mistakes. Lol. Sorry, I know this is a negative response, but I had a looooot of issues with the parenting styles of both Emily and Lorelai. I don't have children myself and don't plan to, but still, it all had its toxicity. I've watched both Girlmore Girls and A Year in the Life twice each over time and get more irritated by it all every time an episode is on my TV. Haha. I also probably don't have the right to comment on anybody's parenting styles being childless myself, but I still have strong opinions. 😂😂😂

I think you can totally have an opinion without having a kid, I mean you were a kid once so at least at this point, you and I both have that side covered 🤣. I do think they both for sure started immature. I with truly, that in the reboot more maturity. I think, even though we would have been a little sad to miss seeing the wedding of Luke and Lorelai, if they were happy and felt more mature and stable then we would have quickly gotten over that feeling! I don't like that they felt just as rocky like 10 years later in our time.
