    In this video, I react for the first time to the Welsh singer Ren and English singer Chinchilla performing “Chalk Outlines”. I analyze their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. This is an amazing tune and I am so glad I finally reacted to it!

    Hello, gorgeous! I'm Lolli, your Fairy Voice Mother. I am a voice teacher & vocal anatomy nerd specialising in contemporary techniques. I have a degree in vocal performance, and I am studying for a masters degree in voice pedagogy. I sing all the time in styles such as pop, jazz, rock, metal, soul, Hindustani, Carnatic and I am constantly learning and practicing new vocal skills. I just bloody love singing. It's my favourite thing in the whole world, and because I love you, I want you to sing too. I believe everyone can sing, and my mission with this channel is to break down techniques that are so often portrayed as something to be exclusively accessed by people with a special talent. Well. Special talents can be learnt, and I am here to teach them to you.

    I'm so excited to be a part of your singing journey, It's one that truly never ends.

      When depression becomes normal, being ok is terrifying. You know it's not going to last long, and you can't enjoy it because of that anxiety. "When and how will this end?" Yeah, it's rough.

    At 51 I was just diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I was told I've probably had it most of my adult life. I've struggled mentally for as long as I can remember. Depression, anxiety, cog fog, attention issues, blah blah. To now learn that most if not all of it could have just been chewed up wiring... who am I really? Who could I have been. It's got me really f-ed up. F-ed enough that I finally went into thrapy. Life really be life-ing on us sometimes! ❤

    Just wanted to say that, as someone who has struggled with severe anxiety and depression, the part where you pointed out that it’s really difficult “because it’s a fear of yourself” hit me as hard as the song did. I’ve never heard it simplified that way before and my god, that resonates. Thank you for that. Seriously.

    One of the great truths in life is that Ren is *always* so much better than you remembered.
    Even when what you remember was that the last thing you heard from him was life-changing.
    "Scared of being OK, cause all things change" - for me, I'm scared of being OK because if I were ever to get better and then get worse again... this time, I know how bad it gets, and also, how many people you lose, and also, how much work (and how long it can take) to recover even just to the point I've fought for today (which is FAR from OK).
    And since I've been on Disability for 19.5 years, if I ever got better to the point of being "OK," I don't think I could ever fully *trust* that I wouldn't crash again.
    I got an extra layer of emotional watching you watch this just because I know you had that voice-focused conversation with Chinchilla and felt that vocalist kinship strongly with her. I can't imagine we'll ever see another reactor react to Chalk Outlines only *after* having an in-depth conversation like that with her. Unique.

  • @T10elC
    @T10elC 9 місяців тому +8

    These two are precious. Individuals who have dealt with debilitating issues and stood at death's door know they can become chalk outlines at any moment. A sense of normality or "being okay" are scary feelings. Powerful performance.

  • @saltydroog854
    @saltydroog854 9 місяців тому +23

    I honestly had forgotten that you haven't yet done their duets. I think I had just assumed that you listened to them on your own and therefore weren't going to "react" to them. They were SOOOOO hot in the reaction community that it was hard to imagine you just not having gotten to them. That's not a judgement, just an observation.
    This song gets me every time. I myself have never been on psychotropics for depression or anxiety, etc. But someone very very near and dear to me was for many years. And whenever she would take them I could almost watch her disappear before my eyes, like a slow leak from an inflatable pool toy, and there would just be this empty person in her stead that kinda sorta resembled her. I've probably heard this song 200+ times, and still every time I hear Chinchilla chime in with the word "Sertaline" it absolutely destroys me. "The feeling goes, and you draw a chalk outline"...wheeeeww. Those words are like a baseball bat across the head. IDK what is going on with our society, where such a large number of us need to be on these life long subscriptions to mood altering drugs. IDK if it's the water, the air, or the fake food we eat...our lifestyles, or what. I don't want to say it's a scam for the pharmaceuticals to collect a tax from us, but I'd be lying if I said if didn't feel like it sometimes. Whatever it is we absolutely MUST get to the bottom of it. We are systematically homogenizing our young people right out of what makes them unique and special, and it's absolutely tragic. This is not to say that they are not appropriate for some people. or even most of the people that are on them. I am not qualified to say. But if so, the fact that we've made a world where this course of action is in any way appropriate for so many, is a damning indictment on our society as a whole.
    Please, please, please... I beg of you to do their live duet of "How to Be Me". Name your price...I'll donor it right now. Aside from the fact that I think Ren's message on mental health is a modern equivalent to Orwell's in the past, this particular performance is absolutely gorgeous. And I would imagine someone of your singing expertise would have a field day with it.

    "The reason we have to learn Vocal Techniques is not because we wanna be a Vocal Technischen and impress people with our Vocal skills its because to have enough colors in ur vocal palette to paint the picture of what's going on inside." on of the most impressed sayings i hear in a long time ....thank u for that !

    Ren has all the colors known to humans, and an extra few from other dimensions.

    It's a lovely interpretation of a lovely song. I often wonder to myself why sadness can be so beautiful sometimes. Melancholy, saudade, etc... It's that sort of soft sadness vibe I get from this song despite the theme being drugs and depression. It's like god saying "don't worry young one, you'll never be truely sad, have some pretty".

    As I am suffering myself from double depression, depersonalization, anxiety disorder and a chronical pain disorder (e.g. 20+ days with headaches / month) for decades by now I feel so connected to Ren and this masterful pieces of art he created and gave us. Also my "creative I" can understand his struggles and thoughts so well. The lines you mentioned regarding the fear of yourself and state hit me as well every time I hear them: They are so familiar!

    Absolutely love your reaction thank you. This would be one of my fave all time pieces if it weren’t for a song called “How to be me” which is even freakin better if that’s possible.actually it’s a cpl of levels better imho. It’s by Ren and Chinchilla. Do you know them? If you do check it out make sure once again you get the live version bc it’s basically the best thing ever. Thank you!❤❤❤

    I forgot that you fell off the Ren train a while ago (or at least parked it in a siding 😂). There's so much in his catalogue and recent album I'd love to see you react to. Hope you'll get that train 🚂🚃🚃 moving again. He's the artist of the year for me, no doubt.
