He should have pulled off the pavement to minimize damage and the chance of getting hit, and he should have stayed off the track, and for God's sake learn where your fire extinguisher is and practice getting it out so you can do it blind and freaking out. And have a full one. That was the worst fire response he could have had, short of driving into the stands and running back onto the track to lay down.

I was a BARC fire Marshall for 8 years, I put 3 engine fires out. You should pull the bonnet pins out, lift the bonnet while crunching low and spray dry power.

You don't know what caused the fire. Without proper gear/training, you shouldn't ever open the hood in a car fire situation. It's very dangerous as it could make the fire worse, cause injury, or spread the fire if you're not sufficiently distant to other flammable materials. The best thing to do is to get out and away. If you can, try to get the vehicle away from anything too, which is a big ask as the priority is to get out.
Cause of the fire has nothing to do with proper fire extinguisher technique. Every fire that’s being attacked with a fire extinguisher uses the same fundamental. Aim at the base of the fire to the best of your ability. This fool panicked and gave his hood a foam job. When he used the second extinguisher he directed the foam onto the motor.
I find it sad people arent aware fire extinguishers last only a few seconds It aint a god damn magic infinite source, it sprays out extremely high pressure and will run out quickly His lasts 5 seconds, normal ones 10-15

Putting it in the grass will cause more problems, cuz the tires are warm af from the racing, he can make the grass caught fire, also, if the engine is on fire, putting it in grass will make the grass burn too therefore leading to much more damage to the race car and the track
The hood is not airtight. It’s not keeping oxygen away from the flames. It’s not like a closed room smoldering until you open the door. The entire bottom of an engine compartment is open to the air. Either way, better to let the safety personnel handle it obviously they know what they’re doing. This guy didn’t even have a fire extinguisher worth a fuck
The hood has vents. Your logic applies to confined, closed spaces. The engine bay sits in an open air environment. He needs to Pop. The. Hood.(You know, like the fire patrol did) and go through his safety procedures because this was....a subpar reaction.

@@zzeroo-m8l, air doesn't burn without fuel, 3x the air doesn't mean 3x the fire. Fires need fuel, air, and heat. Too much air can be just as bad for a fire as too little. A lot more air, and thus a lot less heat, makes the fire rely on the fuel part a lot more. The hood on a stationary car is like an oven. Heat can cause non-fuel things to become fuel. More air removes the heat upwards, away from the source. A good fire extinguisher should be able to put-out the fire. Maybe have a 2nd kind stashed somewhere? The 3rd one did a good job, the 2nd one was ok.

Correct way to do it is open the hood as soon as possible but with an adequate extinguisher (you can see the fire crew do just that as soon as they arrive) and completely douse the engine bay. The hood prevents foam from getting where it needs to be. This tool box had a toy extinguisher and stopped in the middle of the track. Then couldn't even find his bottle! Nothing about what this driver did was commendable.
Both extinguishers he used were good and quality, good pressure and fully emptied, that wasn't an old extinguisher issue that extinguisher isn't gonna handle a whole engine fire

I always used old faithful ABC extinguishers for these types. We had Cold Fire for when drivers were on fire. Both worked great.
