I hate that Clem pretty much abandons AJ after the entire multi-season arch of Clementine becoming AJ’s guardian, losing him, the pain of thinking he died, finding him again, and raising him to be a capable survivor in a post apocalyptic world. All of that groundwork in the games is thrown out the window for a forced romance with a character who isn’t really a character. I said what I said.
Why would she be given the job of writer if she has no experience with the characters? The mindset of corporate media is very divorced from the concept of "series continuation".
@@starkiller1289 Worse yet, these games are the closest equivalent of reading a novel, the job of playing through them takes as much effort as thinking and deciding locations and writing your own characters even If they are garbage.
@@mado-wh4jv It's 2024, the whole things on UA-cam as movies. She didn't even have to take the time to actually play it. She could've watched the entire thing. It's even available for phones at this point. There were a ridiculous amount of ways she couldn've went about learning Clem's story and didn't.
The author took this character and made her unrecognizable, I didn't spend four seasons for this, Lee didnt die so Clem can fight through hell itself to just ditch AJ like nothing happened
It shows that WE were Clem’s moral compass. Without us, she turned sour. This can be interpreted as a philosophical take on Freewill and… Nah, it’s just bad writing.
Let us remember that Clem is a character who managed to obliterate a group of trained and experienced soldiers through pure strategy and ingenuity. And all she had with her was a tiny group of inexperienced kids. The comic expects us to believe that this is a character who would get half the town killed because she couldn't contain a bunch of walkers. Like, I understand that everyone makes mistakes, but this is like an expert surgeon randomly forgetting basic human anatomy.
@@Mysteryz-li2pw wait what?!!!! No f-ing way!!! like the whole foundation for clementine for "who she is now" is Lee and lee kind of anchor point to the telltale walking dead universe how can the author mess it up so bad let alone make his character completely meaningless? (i still didn't understand what you mean by meaningless i haven't read the comic but that straight up like murdering entire telltale development of walking dead to me)
This retcon also ensures that AJ loses ANY access to information about his biological parents. He’ll never be able to ask Clementine about what his mom or dad was like.
so i'm supposed to believe that clementine abandons a kid that she's known from birth, protected and raised, gone through hell and back to reunite with, murdered a lot of people for and would have given her own life for, because what? she's a little sad? that is simply unbelievable as a premise. AND THAT'S STEP #1 BRO, THE TRAIN HASN'T EVEN LEFT THE STATION AND IT'S ALREADY DERAILED
I truly believe Skybound could've emailed some random fanfic writer within the fandom and they would've been better off. Pair their writing with an artist who's style is more suitable for the Walking Dead franchise and they're golden.
fr, i feel if i had writing skills i could have done better then THIS at the very least, iv played all the games, went back to see different choices ect, they really should have gotten a fan to write a fanfic cuz it would have just turned out better
They could’ve had a fic writer that mostly wrote Kenny x Lee stories wrjte the stories of the comic and I bet it would of done better than what we got.
Never will I understand why there wasn't an option to return to Javier at the end of S4. It would've actually made New Frontier Worth Something! That's my personal canonical ending to Clementine's Story
"AJ is all I have left, I am all AJ has left, and I will protect AJ with my life like Lee did with me" - Clem S4 "iM nOt HaPpY wItH yOu, FuCk YoU" - Tangerine 2021
yhep what more reason do i need to not read the comic more than this lol after watching this video i feel like the author has grudge against clementine
the thing that really gets me about the comic is that in the games clementine fought like crazy to get aj back and so she and him could finally find a permanent home and live peacefully together only for the comic to make it so that clementine decides to abandon aj at the school because she. idk. got bored of living a peaceful life the comic is genuinely one of the biggest cases of character assassination for the sake of making a quick buck ive ever seen in my life. like. lee did not die for this shit. clementine did not ALMOST die for this shit. she was so ready to die if it meant aj could be safe and have somewhat of a normal life. she would not fucking do that shit the comic made her do. god i really wish they had hired someone who actually understood clementines character to make the comics instead of someone who basically had to speedrun the games after she was given the job in order to have a bare bones idea of what the series is about. it could've been great.
If Tillie had kept AJ in the comic she would have killed him off by now like she did Amos the Amish kid. She is obviously planning to replace him anyway with Amos' love child. When Olivia dies in childbirth Clem and Ricca will be forced to become the adopted parents of a bouncing baby girl. Tillie is obviously afraid of Men!
honestly I think even if someone did speedrun the games to write the story, but actually was still a skilled writer, they could have pulled something off, this story is ridiculous. I always thought the ending of season 4 was a "downer ending in disguise" because after all, in the post-apocalypse one of the most valuable things ever is health. Having a strong and enduring body is a must, because combat and evasion are essentials in this world, and there are no doctors anymore. The school might be safe, for that moment, but there are factions even in the TT TWD universe that could eventually stumble there, or new ones could form. There's a myriad of ways that the group could eventually run into danger, and what would Clem do without a leg? Can't gunfight properly unless very far away, can't run away... There was potential in this comic but it seems like the writer simply wasn't very good, it was a skill issue lmao.
@@luisvidal4690 Depends really. Tillie Walden work best with lesbian love stories. She is trying to hard to combine that with zombies. People who aren't familiar with the games might like it if they were LGBTQP diehards followers. You know the type who attend all gay pride parades to show their fascist support for her community.
@@72Worker idk what you mean by this. If someone likes a story purely because it includes a specific group of people, and not because the story is good in itself, then that doesn't mean the story or the writer are any good. Idk the other works of this writer but undeniably this comic would had been better off on a more skilled writer's hands.
@@luisvidal4690 I'm saying the only ones Tillie is writing for is the LGBTQP community. This also allows for the grooming of new LGBTQP members among the more gullible fans of the walking dead.
The thing that really gets me about the whole "Clem's scared of birth" thing is that, depending on a choice, Clem literally references witnessing the death of Christa's baby saying "No, not again" when AJ appears to have been stillborn which further supports what you say about the memory being a happy one. She's already seen the worst outcome, and AJ's birth was that tiny bit of hope for Clem which was so important in s2 where she was constantly getting hope and then watching it get completely stomped on in a constant loop. I get a time crunch, but when a game has many choices and not only that but many *dialogue options* that could possibly make what you write clash with canon I really think you need to play the games more than one quick time. To be fair though, this could be a mix of her and the publisher's fault since we don't know how quick of a deadline she may have had.
She actually says that at the very end of S2, when she and Kenny thought AJ had died due to Jane, referencing the death of Christa's baby then. But the rest of your point still stands
@@mrleaf6055 or it could be referencing jane and kenny fighting/kenny going off the deep end which she had observed before with duck and katjaa's death.
Fun Fact: When the Clementine comic first released, it showed up in the Career tab of her Wikipedia. A few months after the bad reception and reviews of the comic, Clementine was removed from the Career tab. It still shows up in Published Work however.
What they should’ve done is had AJ grow up, maybe 10-13, travelling with the caravan group mentioned at the end of s4. We know the caravan group is part of the “coalition” which links it to multiple other groups, so maybe after hearing abt the war, AJ is tasked with guiding the coalition to Richmond to save the garcias. He could encounter a handful of characters Clem has interacted with and could see an outside perspective on his big sister, he could see the work from his own perspective. That kind of stuff yk? The issue I have with Tillie is that, whether she tried to write a good story or not, she disrespected the fans, and I blame sky bound for allowing it to happen. They know fully well how dearly we hold Clem to our hearts, so for nobody to stop and think, “guys, are we actually paying tribute to Clem or just hoping for a cash grab?”, is exceedingly frustrating. Clems story is over; she had 9 years of plight. Let AJ take on the mantle as a leader and let him see the world for himself. He’s clems legacy, not this mess Tillie has made of our sweet pea
@@XWierdThingsHappenX Pretty much, AJ is basically one of the first generation of children born during the apocalypse. An everything the old world was prior to their birth, is nothing more then just ancient history, of a long dead civilization. In which they have little to no knowledge about aside from the stories of those that were born prior to the apocalypse. So missed opportunity for Skybound to make a story about that.
I disagree that she disrespected the fans. At the end of the day it's just a game with a compelling story we like, and the author of this comic book has no obligation to us or anything. She simply butchered one of the best characters in a story and that's it. I just think condemning someone over a comic book story is unreasonable and irrational.
Since this is already bad fanfiction, might as well put my own spin on it. Lee comes back to life using instant transmisson to slap some sense to tangerine
The game’s ending was already perfect. Sometimes the story doesn’t need a continuation once it’s reached a good epilogue. For the comics to add more to it just hurts.
I am just going to let it all out here (sorry if I sound nasty): First of all, I have waited until I was the right age to play the games. I knew about Clementine, and I knew the story. I loved everything about the games and to see this comic appear out of basically nowhere, really pissed me off. I have never seen anything like this in my gaming history, like ever. Imagine being in Clementine's shoes/boots, having to look after a little boy during an zombie apocalypse and imagine being bitten by a walker, then having to drag yourself quickly towards a dangerous barn and make a tough decision to either be 'killed' by the boy (I know his name is AJ), or 'be left to turn'. Almost everyone chose the 'kill me' option in the game and miraculously, Clementine survived because of AJ's clever survival skills. The game ends peacefully with the choices that you have picked and you are happy with that ending, right? In comes the comic and boom, the so called author completely ripped apart Clementine's character by making her LEAVE AJ BEHIND. She would NEVER do that to him. She went to a ranch and RESCUED him. But, the author forgot about that, clearly. None of our choices mattered in the 'true ending' in that comic. I feel so fucking bad for Clementine's VA. The comic should have never even happened. In my eyes, the real ending is the ending that we all chose in our gameplays. If that makes sense. My true ending in my case, is her being HAPPY and having a PLACE TO FEEL SAFE IN CALLED HOME. I'm sorry for the rant.
not nasty- REAL ASF. i was excited for the comic when it was announced, thinking clementine’s story would continue even without the games. then, the comic was released, reviews came out, and it was confirmed the comics completely ruined her character. it was devastating.
Honestly I relate heavily here, I’m 16 right now and grew up watching so many different gameplays of this game. I only bought all four seasons a few months ago haha. This is not nasty at all, it’s pure facts…
@@RazeeSims I waited until I was 18. I was 16 when I got very interested in it. Then when I played it, my old gaming computer literally died after 3 months because of its motherboard. I then got scared of having a new one, so i waited for two years and finally got my new gaming computer last year. It's coming up to 2 months now since I had it. I finished that heavy chapter of my life by playing the final season for the 3rd time and ended that chapter.
The ripped us the fans off, this comic and no hate to the author but she rlly didnt play the games imo, this is rlly sad, the only way for them to fix this is to make the comic non-canon cause i refuse to believe clem would do that, basically the same as clem saying she hated lee, like WHAT!?!?! How!?! where did that came from like its so random for her character, I enjoyed you writing that cause i would rather re-read your whole message than read the comics cause your rant made more sense than the entirety of the comics
I can tell the writer didn't properly play the game. If they did, they would definitely notice what Clementine said to AJ at the end of the game. "If it's just you and me out there and I was like this, I don't think I could make it two weeks." She herself admitted that there is no way she can survive outside the school. S4 ending is one of the most memorable moments in the entire game, considering it concluded her story. If you ask me, I don't think they would ignore all the major details if they played it properly. They just left out every bit of important detail about Clem's design! I highly agree about the multiple scars she had. Even if the author discarded the scar from the four outcomes of season 2, like you said, she still had a permanent dog bite and the frontier symbol and it's part of her character design. So, because comic clem doesn't have any of those, it's safe to say that this is without a doubt Tangerine.
1: wonderful video nice job 2:I would have enjoyed a simple and very short comic of the season 4 gang just doing day to day things. But no. They had to make arguably 1 of the most horrendous comic series.
wow i never knew the comics were that bad. its a shame, because a sequel comic could've had potential to wrap up any loose ends still left in telltale's universe (christa) but instead we get character assaination. its really a shame :(
@@NewOrderOfAlexandria Don't insult Twilight like that. The story of a suburban girl doing stupid shit is still way more believable than the story of Tangerine.
You know its bad when even on the offical walking dead wiki they made a diffrent page as if they where seperate characters just so it can't be acnowledged unless necesary and they kept the reapers as canon so you know this is bad.
AJ is Clem's reason to live, she's his mother. Everything she does in season 3 and 4 is for him. Her bond she grows with the other kids at the school to find a home is the other point of season 4. To see her abandon them all and push AJ away in such a cruel manner is blatant character assassination. A misunderstanding of her character and delves into the needless depression and cruelty that season 2 fell into. It's everything they could have done wrong and it's the FIRST action she takes. Outside of killing all of them in the opening panels I can't think of a worse opening.
i have no idea what tillie was thinking when she wrote this comic. it just feels like a bunch of rehashed ideas from the games... i don't understand where any of it came from in tillie's mind. i have no idea how tillie watched all of season four and saw the healthy, strong relationships that clementine forms with not just vi and louis but the WHOLE school but still wanted to see a new romance with ricca. and her naming her prosthetic after kenny is just... such a choice. like my clem would SO NOT do that. i just hope that anyone who finds the series through this comic engages with the games so they realize what they're missing out on. we should've just gotten cute slice of life bonus content in the form of these comics that didn't have such a severe impact and terrible implications for the rest of the game 💔💔
I think that most people say Ricca is Walden's self-insert because she looks the same, is lesbian, but also because Clem decides to just fuck off to Vermont, where, drum roll, Walden lives. It makes no sense why Clem would go there except if the author wants her to be there. Clem literally comes from Georgia. How would a girl that stopped going to school at 8 would know where Vermont is ? And in the following years why would she even bother learning about that small state in the middle of nowhere ?
Thing is, it seems like Walden didn't know much of anything about Telltale's TWD before getting the job and rushing through the games, so what would be her motive in making a self-insert to date a minor from a game she seemingly doesn't care about?
I think you're too kind on Tillie. There is a level of shame that should be endured by someone that takes money to ruin a story and make it into some half baked fan-fic. Defending her and her other comics while just ripping on this one just makes copy cats more likely. She should understand that she has no place in writing outside of pre-teen dramas so she never ruins another story for the fans. She insulted everyone who appreciated Telltale's TWD and got paid for it. She needs to defender, she needs to feel shame.
Based on Clem’s lines during during Jane vs Kenny about AJ she said “not again not again” witch can be hinting that Christa’s kid could’ve been born fine also when Clem needed to put sow up her arm she learned it from Christa
Just so you're aware, at 2:46 you mistakenly called the final episode of Season Four, "Done Running" which is exactly Season Four Episode 1's title. The final episode's title is "Take Us Back" in reference to the song that plays near the end with AJ walking back to Ericson's, as well as the original end credits song for Season 1, Episode 5.
They made it harder than it needed to be by making the comic a continution. I mean if they desperately wanted to make a comic, I would recommend literally right after a new frontier when clementine leaves richmond, thats like a month or so of a journey that we the player, dont know about for her to find Aj. If tillie wanted clementine to be "edgy" having her new frontier attitude this would be perfect and it gives clementine an actual goal instead of just wandering. She's determinded to get to him by any means, so it would be a great story to see how her morals are throughtout this period without aj being her filter. The only choice that would really get in way would be the season 2 finale choices (if you left with jane, kenny, went alone, or wellington) one would have to be canon which i dont think they have a problem with cause they made clem shooting lee casually canon. This could be a mini series all it would have to do is end clem on a horse to mccarrol leading into the final game. Or scratch all that and make a little comic about clem and aj's life on the road, like how clem made up the rules, the whole thing where aj's shoes broke. That's years of adventures and would explore more of clem and aj's realtionship.
There’s no drive for her to leave no reason. She simply just does. Erickson is a place where she could live for a long time and have friends and a family. It makes no sense for her to leave. The school is not in danger. The people still love her, aj still needs her. Leaving is the most selfish and illogical thing she can do. And clementine is not selfish like this!! She is only ever selfish when it comes to protecting herself from bad people, these are not bad people. And the author does like no effort in making up a conflict for clem to have a reason to leave. Other than apparently losing her leg? But she can’t get that back by going outside? And she seems mostly fine with that anyways and understands why aj did it. So that’s not even a conflict
It must also be hard to write something that continues from a game with a final season that has multiple endings. Do you have Louis or Violet to reference, or do you have Tenn? And while I was reading, I couldnt feel a connection to the games--and definitely not s4. I feel like the world that Comic Clem finds herself in is so far removed from the games and is just another TWD character.
In my mind the real ending is a happy louis who still can crack jokes. This non canon book is the evil route This version of Clem was pro violet and without them mention it Violet is hundred percent dead.
It just feels so juvenile and immature as a story. Like the writer has some growing up to do and it shows. It also feels like the writer is jealous of the established story or is too incompetent to realize the import points of it an incorporate if. I just hope this isn’t canon and we can at least get some kind of redo. Even still this is also a good lesson in why it’s important to let some characters rest and not bring them back or give them a sequel they don’t need. Overall I’m just really confused why this was checked by publishers and released. I guess they aren’t really fans and don’t see the incongruities.
I feel bad for Tillie Walden, the author; I feel this was thrusted on her and she had no prior knowledge of TWD except for a very basic outline of Clementine. She's a very good cartoonist, otherwise.
but i think she could have like done the bare minimum like play the game. or maybe just watched a UA-cam video explaining the timeline of the game series? i dunno they are usually like one to two hours long. but i suppose it’s too late now.
Yeah, but I still do feel like if she's been given a job to adapt sth, unless the time is insanely tight, looking into what you're adapting with more depth than a wiki page or third hand knowledge is the least you could do. I've genuinely never seen an adaptation of any work in any media that the creator blatantly ignored/poorly researched the source material that did well with the audience it was supposed to cater for. Like from what I can tell I don't think she really played the games, even in a cursory manner.
she could have done the absolute bare minimum and atleast played the games, after admitting she didnt, i felt no shame in hating her she straight up ruined clem and its CANON NOW
Thank you so much for sensibly critiquing this comic. The Walking Dead game series is among my favorites and as a huge Grand Theft Auto fan (this is related I promise lol) this was a song and dance that was all too familiar to me, as Grand Theft Auto V did a similar sort of character assassination to previous protagonist Johnny Klebitz- the kind of thing where you retroactively ruin the ending of the previous story and shatter any growth the main character may have had. Seeing this repeated with another character I care about was genuinely heartbreaking for me, with the only silver lining being that it was in a different form of media as opposed to a mainline game so it was easier for me to just pretend it never happened.
LUCKY OH MY GOODNESS!! I have been waiting for your coverage on this topic for the longest time!!!!! Its disgusting how much they let the author scratch her identity. I really dont know how Skybound fumbled THIS bad
It honestly feels like Walden didn’t want a continuation of TWDG or Clementine, she just wanted to make an original story without doing the hard work of making an original story. This comic should never had been made.
Not only does this characterisation blatantly go against what was established about Clementine in four games, the maker of the comic even outright admitted to "rushing through the games" and basing Comic-Clementine's eventual love interest on herself. The comic is a prime example of cash-in, fanfiction, self-insert nonsense. How this could ever have been green-lit is beyond me.
I straight up refuse to accept the Tangerine comics as canonical. Each time a new issue releases, there's some form of new and unique character assassination
This is sort of like the live action movie of ATLA.... we just pretend it doesn't exist. Also I follow you on tiktok as well and I'd love to see your take on the book The Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison, which is a queer post apocalyptic trilogy

After watching this video, I personally have come to the conclusion that the problem came from the writer not caring about the games story and wanting to make comic Clem Tilly's own character. You see the problem quite a lot with books and other serialized stories that have many different writers.
seconds later you can see the character has dark skin, hair, nothing like the author. Face features argument doesnt make sense as all characters look the same
@@Shadow-jm9eiyet lives in Vermont (same as the author) and is Jewish also the same as the writer. It’s so clear that it is a self insertion. You lot need to get your eyes checked.
I’ll never understand why sexuality needs to be pushed. Make a good story and a good character. Too many times writers come out and say “yeah I NEED to make sure their sexuality is a focus.” No you NEED to make a good story. Diversity should never be a focus. Always the story and characters
Plus, with a good story, people won’t even THINK about diversity. Like, most people don’t even think about the fact that Clementine is a mixed race character, hell I forget it myself pretty often!
@@sirnetflix7162 This. People always claim racism and sexism is why games with ''diverse'' casts don't do well, but then conveniently forget that Lee and Clem are both the most beloved characters of their game series, which has sold numerous millions. I absolutely abhor woke trash, but I LOVE Clementine. Even her New Frontier iteration got me giggling like a little girl when she first appeared, and I basically created my entire playthrough around her. It felt awesome seeing her grow up into a little badass. Lee's legacy in the flesh kicking ass. And also, we don't actually give a shit about stuff like same sex relationships if it's done well. Life is Strange gave me that choice, and I went for it. Why? It felt natural. And since I didn't like Louis, I went for it again in S4 of this series. So how does that work? Because I've been called homophobic more times than I could count. It's almost like we simply criticize trash writing that's simply woke to substitute actual writing rather than us having an issue with what they'd dub ''diversity''. Someone not being white or straight doesn't make something woke. It's when you simply make them not white and not straight and have that be the be all and end all for those characters purely for the sake of ''diversity'' that it's woke. Clem was never a character like that, not even one bit. Tangerine though? She's nothing but.

i agree with a large portion of this video but theres one thing that i would only criticize its that part of the self inserts, i think that just becouse the character looks diffrent than the person who made it doesnt mean that its not a self insert. let me explain so here is that guy named animatedjames and he made a interesting art piece of..... pornograpy where a white charachter gets farted on and it was a self insert but he made it a diffrent race so that it wouldnt get discovered that he draw such a thing sorry if the explanation is crappy english is not my first language. and even if its not a self insert of her its still creepy that she drew that
A lot of comics these days have the people behind them doing self inserts even if they try hiding it badly . If she didn’t faithfully adapt the games to the comic then it seems like she had an agenda . I don’t care about whatever ist and phobe names at this point she was a predatory lesbian going after an underage girl . The comics were just tumblr fan fiction that got printed . Someone needs to make a more faithful comic adaptation without putting themselves in there .
It shows that you completely skipped over the part in the video that explicitly explains and provides evidence against the notion that the author was being a "predatory lesbian." This isn't ignorance at its finest, its dishonesty.
Oh I hate that comic a lot as well, I’ve made edits that trash on them. I think what makes Clem’s leaving EVEN worse is that she was still not a liability to begin with, in fact she remained one of the most important people in Ericson’s due to the fact that during TFS, she showed her leadership capabilities against threats like the Delta and by the end had become the new leader of Ericson’s which is shown by her choosing to and organizing who goes to see the caravan that is mentioned at the end. Clementine still has practical propose to actually run things as an efficient and effective leader who listens to people, like in TFS where while she did lead the battle against the Delta, she still took in the suggestions of the other members and made a plan from it. AND, I think very intentionally Telltale made it so that her amputation isn’t all that crippling long term, AJ cut her leg far below the knee and the game at the end can even have AJ say that he’ll get Clem a new leg and find the “foot book”. This pretty much suggests that after TFS, AJ along with other people in Ericson’s of course design a prosthetic and make one for Clementine which due to her below the knee amputation would be quite effective and restore most of her mobility, capable of running and doing things (below the knee amputees can, a girl at high school some years ago was one and could definitely keep up and had the attitude that she doesn’t need any extra help as I heard her tell someone once) which Clem even did in the comics… with a prosthetic from some random Amish community we never see again, wow. Liability my ass. But of course that’s one thing, I hate the writing, Clem abandoning AJ, the fact that Clementine and Louis were very happy together and Louis’ character especially early on was about showing Clem to enjoy life and have fun which Clementine later on could be influenced by to start acting not just in line with it as she could do rather quickly, but embrace it and start joking around too or having fun assuming the situation didn’t need her to be doing important things. But in turn, Louis also grew to be more capable and step up with Clementine’s influence, after all he is trusted at the end by a Clouis Clementine to be the ONE responsible with AJ meet the caravan and basically represent them. Seeing Clementine cheat on Louis with Ricca is just heartbreaking and infuriating, just how Tillie could have such little regard for the fans of Clementine or even the very games she claimed to have played. I mean hell, Clementine in S1 literally said “we don’t leave friends behind” when voting to keep Ben in the group, even as a little girl she stuck loyal to her friends and that NEVER changed, even in ANF Clementine warms up to Javi and actually ends up probably being rather useful and the person who kept him from getting taken by NF and his family in the first place and of course at the end of it they are friends. TFS? Clem could have just abandoned Ericson’s before the Delta attack and keep herself and AJ uninvolved but she did not, she stuck by her new friends for a home for herself and AJ and for her friends. Tangerine breaks so many core parts of Clem’s character that no matter our choices are there it is ridiculous, probably one of the worst cases of character assassination ever in media. And her scars? As much as Clem could understandably take issue with them, the only one I could see actually worrying about is the New Frontier brand as she took it to join people to help AJ but ended up getting AJ taken away from her instead, but even then I could see someone like Louis comforting her saying that that brand shows her dedication and love for AJ, to be proud... and maybe that it looks cool. But seriously, I bet Louis would wash away any scar worries saying that Clem is still beautiful (for their standards, but Clem if clean would look pretty actually so yeah) and that maybe it also makes her more badass, shows she can get through anything. But yeah, also that Clem acts so dumbed down also is awful, she shows a lack of basic wound care knowledge which she even displayed in season 2 by stitching her own arm and disinfecting it, in fact that was her worry that made her sneak around for supplies as she didn't want an infection and then in book 1... "Why would I need to wash it"... just... what? She also seemingly lost English ability as she starts struggling with words when in the games she was rather competent even with the apocalypse which might make sense as S2 and TFS do reference how Clem likes books and how she had books in her bedroom she read so it makes sense that off screen Clementine would have also read books as something to do in spare time, especially when she was in a community like Wellington, Richmond, Ericson's after TFS especially or others. We can also see that Clementine made sure AJ got to practice his reading at the start of TFS which would also explain his ability to read and write even better than most kids his age today as Clementine literally taught him those from when he was a toddler yet now in the comics, she struggles. It does make sense Clem would lack education in areas but reading and writing in English would not be one of those with what we know about her. Not my Clementine, not canon.
This screams of self insert. Only real explanation as to why you would narrative and clem's character development was thrown away for a weird romance. I find that context really does matter when writing a story which seems to get lost in the sauce. It's a zombie game, obviously food and survival come first.
The Clementine comic will never be canon. Literally the decision they make Clem make makes no sense after everything he experienced in the games. This comic was a desperate and mediocre attempt to make more money with a character whose development and story came to his end. And lets not even talk about the quality of the drawing, which is at the level of a 12 year old child. I think even AJ drawings were better. In short, they took a beloved character, totally destroyed him by changing his personality to one completely opposite of the one we knew, and sent him out to market to see if it would work. Obviously he failed and Im glad he did. Now the only thing we can do is hope that Telltale continues with Javier story (New Frontier vs The Delta would be perfect and would make sense since Clem mentions that all of Richmond became a war zone between communities) or some new character but I would like they give a good closure to Javiers story, after all the war mentioned in the final season we never knew if his community managed to survive.
Tbh, the same way the Halo show isnt canon, and how us fans dont see Megamind 2 as canon, or Rings of pwr for that matter, or star wars, marvel... ya the list goes on, its fair to consider this comic as uncanon as well. 🤷♀
Hi, I didn't know you before this video and I'm happy that it seems you've had your time looking through the ttg games and characters, but as a fan and as someone who used to have your mindset on the matter, I have to disagree with you about the self insert. It's funny that you point out the Brattleboro conference that was held on october/november of 2022, most people haven't watched it and for me that was the last drop. I made my review of book 1 also on 2022 and defended the idea that Ricca was NOT a Walden self-insert for quite some time, but honestly after the brattleboro presentation I felt so betrayed because of the way she speaks both about Ricca and about the Killington mountain setting. So basically she has Clementine abandon everything she stood for as a character (on this part we all agree I believe) and go to a place the author lived at when doing these books (even against the editor's will, as she puts it in brattleboro) to meet a character which happens to be blonde (the colourization honestly is non important here because of how inconsistent the artstyle is overall and you even pointed it out yourself, so I'm taking it solely from her character design), wears glasses and most important: is a sephardic jewish girl just like the author, to which she says in brattleboro she's "just like me" and proceeds to say Ricca is "cute" with a shy mannerism, adding to the fact that she's acting like this because Ricca is based on herself, so she is saying indirectly that she herself is also cute. I dunno about you, but for me it's a blatant confession. So the Killington factor paired with theses characteristics about Ricca are just clear red flags for me that denounce a self-insert. You said it yourself, authors and writers put things about themselves and their lives on their work all the time, the problem is when things change so drastically like on these books only to conviniently pair up with what the author WANTS TO DO with a property that isn't hers to begin with. And when a character that is based on her is forced-paired with the main character and becomes the sole reason for Clem to live (as it is shown in book 2 on that terrible scene under the rain), it's eyebrown raising to say the least, wouldn't you agree? She's free to make her own ORIGINAL stories (I've read two books from her and found them honestly good) but when being hired to take someone else's works on her hands she's demonstrated herself as childish and amateur (as she said in brattleboro something on the line of "yes, she's going to killington and if not you just get someone else to write these books for you"). I'm honestly still cracking heads with why and how the editor even against his own will would let her put this on the book still (her convincing tactics must be really good lol there's no other explanation). Everything about this project seems and sounds unnatural, from hiring Tillie, decisions with characters and plot, the young-demographic factor and the insistency in calling it canon. At the end of the day is disrespectful. Srry about the big ass essay lol and thank you for the video and time. BYE :)
I hate how how they went "I could make this book series remember what the characters are great for and continue their amazing story and make a couple of callbacks to the series or I can ignore all that make a terrible story that no one likes and forget every character that we love and ruin Clem's story🤔 I like the second option"
I feel like if they really wanted to make comics it would have been much smarter to expand on determinate things in the series. For example a comic book series about the backstories of all the kids at Ericsson’s, a story about what happened during the 18 months she spent with Christa, or a book about James’s backstory. This way they could continue to expand the world without contradicting the choices made by the player.
They should try and get Robert kirkman back and hit up tell tales/sky bound to make a few more seasons cause I don’t see them using the new comics for a new game so unless they absolutely make a new story through AJ and Clem as a side character I don’t see it happening
they don't not 1 time talk or consider leaving Rebecca and the baby not 1 time in that game that one girl tried to convince clem to leave with her but no one tried to leave Rebecca
Tangerine was just a character in a bad dream either Clementine was having. There is no reason not to think this and every reason to think this - this is canon.

Shhh, the comic isn't canon. We don't count it as canon.

yhep what more reason do i need to not read the comic more than this lol after watching this video i feel like the author has grudge against clementine
the thing that really gets me about the comic is that in the games clementine fought like crazy to get aj back and so she and him could finally find a permanent home and live peacefully together
only for the comic to make it so that clementine decides to abandon aj at the school because she. idk. got bored of living a peaceful life
the comic is genuinely one of the biggest cases of character assassination for the sake of making a quick buck ive ever seen in my life.
like. lee did not die for this shit. clementine did not ALMOST die for this shit. she was so ready to die if it meant aj could be safe and have somewhat of a normal life. she would not fucking do that shit the comic made her do.
god i really wish they had hired someone who actually understood clementines character to make the comics instead of someone who basically had to speedrun the games after she was given the job in order to have a bare bones idea of what the series is about. it could've been great.

AJ should of been the next Clem if they made a game I hope this comic gets forgotten bruh
I would say age him up more than that make him a older teenager going on his own journey like 19 years old. Would have been waaay better.
@@XWierdThingsHappenX Pretty much, AJ is basically one of the first generation of children born during the apocalypse. An everything the old world was prior to their birth, is nothing more then just ancient history, of a long dead civilization. Yeah they should’ve made AJ go back to Richmond when he was older. That would’ve been so cool to see
I disagree that she disrespected the fans. At the end of the day it's just a game with a compelling story we like, and the author of this comic book has no obligation to us or anything. She simply butchered one of the best characters in a story and that's it. I just think condemning someone over a comic book story is unreasonable and irrational.

The game’s ending was already perfect. Sometimes the story doesn’t need a continuation once it’s reached a good epilogue. For the comics to add more to it just hurts.
I am just going to let it all out here (sorry if I sound nasty):
First of all, I have waited until I was the right age to play the games.
PREACHHHHH
not nasty- REAL ASF. i was excited for the comic when it was announced, thinking clementine’s story would continue even without the games. then, the comic was released, reviews came out, and it was confirmed the comics completely ruined her character. it was devastating.
So, because comic clem doesn't have any of those, it's safe to say that this is without a doubt Tangerine.

damn i just finished season 1 like 3 days ago and imagining this is like damn unimaginable to me how could the author do this...
Agreed 100%. I've seen tons of people blackwash or whitewash their OCs to hide their nature as a self-insert.
Thanks for catching it! Mentally switched them up because I associate the word “done” so heavily with the end!
Bro I was bout to say this
There’s no drive for her to leave no reason.
She just took Ellie and slapped clems face on her
It must also be hard to write something that continues from a game with a final season that has multiple endings.
This non canon book is the evil route This version of Clem was pro violet and without them mention it Violet is hundred percent dead.
the wolf among us has a comic and used the ending where you lock the crooked man up.
I never knew these comics existed, and after seeing this. I wish it stayed that way
It just feels so juvenile and immature as a story.
The art looks like it was released on Tumblr and illustrated by a 14-year-old
I feel bad for Tillie Walden, the author; I feel this was thrusted on her and she had no prior knowledge of TWD except for a very basic outline of Clementine. She's a very good cartoonist, otherwise.
Don't mention that name and don't feel bad for her.
but i think she could have like done the bare minimum like play the game. or maybe just watched a UA-cam video explaining the timeline of the game series? i dunno they are usually like one to two hours long.
but i suppose it’s too late now.
Nah there's no excuse for this level of bad writing
she could have done the absolute bare minimum and atleast played the games, after admitting she didnt, i felt no shame in hating her she straight up ruined clem and its CANON NOW
Thank you so much for sensibly critiquing this comic. Seeing this repeated with another character I care about was genuinely heartbreaking for me, with the only silver lining being that it was in a different form of media as opposed to a mainline game so it was easier for me to just pretend it never happened.
skybound can say whatever they want, if the majority of the community hates the comics, then they aint canon
Guys, there is a petition called: Make Tillie Waldens "Clementine Comic" Not Canon. Sign to save Clementine and Aj
majority of the community already doesn’t accept it as canon, so that’s already established widely lmao
LUCKY OH MY GOODNESS!! I have been waiting for your coverage on this topic for the longest time!!!!! Its disgusting how much they let the author scratch her identity. I really dont know how Skybound fumbled THIS bad
Ive seen the process of a lot of babies growing up, i cant believe Clementine did all that in the apocalypse at barely 11/12

Yeah man i agree its trash

Self inserts don't have to look like you. When was that ever a rule?
I still remembered that drunk guy playing Tell Tale Walking Dead season 1 crack on internet cafe PC having 25minutes given to me because I keep coaching him and he get annoyed so he did put me on chair to play for him it was 2015 that time.
After watching this video, I personally have come to the conclusion that the problem came from the writer not caring about the games story and wanting to make comic Clem Tilly's own character. You see the problem quite a lot with books and other serialized stories that have many different writers.
i wasn't convinced about that self insert thing until i seen that picture at 19:53. lol yeah nah she's a creep

Can we stop letting sad adult teenagers making self insert comics for bigger audiences please?
i agree with a large portion of this video but theres one thing that i would only criticize its that part of the self inserts, i think that just becouse the character looks diffrent than the person who made it doesnt mean that its not a self insert. let me explain so here is that guy named animatedjames and he made a interesting art piece of..... pornograpy where a white charachter gets farted on and it was a self insert but he made it a diffrent race so that it wouldnt get discovered that he draw such a thing sorry if the explanation is crappy english is not my first language. and even if its not a self insert of her its still creepy that she drew that
A lot of comics these days have the people behind them doing self inserts even if they try hiding it badly .

Not my Clementine, not canon.
why is she whispering
One of the few times you could actually say it was NOT a better love story than Twilight lmao
Clementine told AJ she'd never leave him.
Yet in the comics she just casually says goodbye like she never said it.
If this game was made by naughty dog they would've already incorporated the comic into the story with no questions asked

At this point this is just glorified fanfiction. This comic, point blank, will neber be cannon in true fans' hearts.
totally agree with this! clementine spent an entire game searching for aj just for her to leave him behind in the book is just wrong
I just love watching you tear into substandard media representations of good characters.
This screams of self insert. Only real explanation as to why you would narrative and clem's character development was thrown away for a weird romance. I find that context really does matter when writing a story which seems to get lost in the sauce. It's a zombie game, obviously food and survival come first.
I’ve read Wattpad fanfictions involving self inserts much better than this dumpster fire of a “continuation”
And yes the new characters (especially Ricca) are no doubt self inserts
@@zorathedrolf551No way, I thought Ricca was Michelle Obama
BYE :)
Never knew there was a comic adaptation but I enjoyed hearing your take on it!
I hate how how they went "I could make this book series remember what the characters are great for and continue their amazing story and make a couple of callbacks to the series or I can ignore all that make a terrible story that no one likes and forget every character that we love and ruin Clem's story🤔 I like the second option"
Could have gone my whole life without knowing about Tangerine.. Oh well lol
The art and panelling was so confusing i couldn't even make sense of the story, which wasn't very good anyway.
Also maybe pick an author who is already invested in the series or at least won’t just rush through the games.
They should try and get Robert kirkman back and hit up tell tales/sky bound to make a few more seasons cause I don’t see them using the new comics for a new game so unless they absolutely make a new story through AJ and Clem as a side character I don’t see it happening
AJ would cut off Clem's other leg if she tried to leave him
Lil man doesn't mess around 💀

Tangerine was just a character in a bad dream either Clementine was having. There is no reason not to think this and every reason to think this - this is canon.
To be fair Sarah was indeed extremely useless
And it was entirely Carlos's fault for not trying to raise her properly because he underestimated her ability to adapt.
