  • This place is probably one of the scariest tourist attractions of Yazd! But don’t worry, there is nothing to be scared of. See we are still alive! This place is more interesting than horrifying. You have my word.
according to Zoroastrians, fire, earth, air and water are four ‘sacred ‘elements and should be kept clean from any contagious or unclean material. Tower of silence it is a cemetery for Zoroastrian’s people but with a slight difference. Based on Zoroastrian’s beliefs, human remaining is unclean. Also, they consider soil as a holy element, so no human shall be buried because the soil will be polluted. So, instead of putting the corpse into the soil (here it comes the scary part), they put them for birds (usually vultures) to feed on them! Now you know why they built towers of silence in height. It is worth to mention that in Zoroastrian’s religious strongly condemns mourning for the dead.
Today, this tower is no longer used in funeral ceremonies for its original purpose and has turned to a touristic attraction. The remote location of the tower was primarily selected for being far enough from Yazd, but with the growth of the city, it is now easily within reach.
In addition, ascending the tower requires a basic level of fitness, but the view of the city (especially during the sunset) would surely be worth it. At the foot of the hill, a modern Zoroastrian cemetery and some other abandoned buildings and temples exist.

As a Zoroastrian we believe that a corpse must not be buried and pollute the earth. The Zoroastrian Tower of Silence would house a number of buildings within the complex. Prayers take place and at a certain point, temple dogs are taken around the corpse to confirm that the person is actually dead. The relatives stay at ground level and the body is taken to the top. The corpses at the top are arranged by age. There is only one Tower of Silence in operation today and that is in Mumbai, India.

@@theadventuresofhastiandherdad My mother used to remember as a child, she attended the ceremony at the Tower of Silence when her grandfather died. She remembered the temple dogs being brought in and taken around the body. The dogs had spots on their foreheads, which signified their third eye. Once the dogs had confirmed the death the ceremony continued.

Well done tour of the Dakhme, I suggest instrumental music instead of English words which distract from your explanations. Why not use Iranian instrumental music?

Zoroastrians are Aryans (so are most Iranians) and the Zoroastrians follow an Aryan and not a Semitic religion. Persians are the cousins of Aryan Indians and Rigvedic Sanskrit and Avestan Persian is very nearly the same and both arose from a common proto-Aryan language. Indeed Iran is a great civilization and Hasti and her Dad are surely making this further evident. Zoroastrian people are destined to survive that too in ethnic purity.

@@theadventuresofhastiandherdad Dear Hasti and your Dad keep enlightening us. I might add the name Zarathustra has the same meaning in Sanskrit as in Avestan-Persian. Zar in Sanskrit is Yellow (gold is yellow) and Ustra in Sanskrit is Camel.

Congratulations on the video. It was the only one to show the tallest and largest tower. The others only show this smaller one, who appears to be younger. The biggest one, the last one you visited, what's the name? It feels more... spiritual.

Thank you so much dear Lucas. I'm so glad that you liked it 🥰 🌻
I guess that's because it's harder to climb the tallest one. It doesn't have any stairs as you saw.
Its name is "Manekji" and it's older than the other one. ❤️✨

I’m wondering why Zoroastian always talks about tower of silence (دخمه)as truly it is the best way possible and technology to dissolved body which it’s not functional and polluted but mostly Zoroastian talking about how Vultures are do the job as their job in the nature is that but they forgot the most aspects which is Sun 🌞 as you can see the shapes of all the Towers of silence are looking like Sun and circle ⭕️ as Sun can give light and life as can be used to burn and destroy body and on the main you can see smaller circle looking like black whole as you can see in the universe, to me they make the building (machine) to transition and union the truth of our self with the truth of life and the source of creation ✨❤️✨ Appreciate for such a lovely video

Cremation and disposal of corpses reflect the era of the Indo Iranian great migration when they did not have time to use the burial method. The group that migrated to India took with them the cremation and those who finally settled in Iran brought with them the disposal of corpses. But after they established in settlements, as in Pars south of Iran, finally accepted the burial system. In the excavation of Parse in the south, coffins and burial signs are discovered. It appears that they buried their corpses in their residence. On the Cyrus' mausoleums an inscription existed that has worn off. But 170 years ago a French Tourist has copied that. It reads: Those who come...do not grudge at this soil that covers my body...That is an indication that Cyrus was buried
