@@wilko871 I’m going into synths so yeah I’d agree, keyboards/piano are actually easy to get into.. it’s all in one line and black keys differ, on a guitar it’s all same keys and one string is differently tuned - still not 100% sure why..
But yes, piano is linear and more visual to learn theory, I’m going guitat to keyboard and translating to each other, fun
@@robob3ar I believe the B string is tuned differently just to make shapes work better, not 100% on that though. I've been tuned to open D for a while. You can tune your guitar however you like. Want it all in 4ths? Just tune your B string down to an A. Not sure how easy it will be to play though. Try it! Let me know how it goes

After open hand chords I don't know the scale of the bar clubs but I can play them I just don't know what they're called I don't know any of the pentatonic scales but I can play them I don't know pretty much half of what it's called can't read music been playing about as long as you and can play back just about anything I hear.

The underlying theory is just the octave, the chromatic scale, the whole step half step formula for the scale in question, and finding the same scale in other positions.
And if you want to go further, understanding mode scales + how to find the chords of a scale + understanding the key signatures of each scale

Exactly, just find the key and run the scale based on if its minor or major of that key, its the same pattern just moves accouding to the key note.. and finding chords for songs can be easily made be lintening to the song and running on the scale looking for the currect notes for each part of the song,
FUNDAMENTALLY, always keep in mind there are only 13 notes and to make everything make sense you just learn how to jump from one octave to another octave. THAT really helped me.
just learn 3 notes per string in C major, in as many fret positions as you want, then you have the "white keys" and once you learn which notes are flat/sharp in a given key you can go for the "black keys" that you need

yeah well my teacher was a university of Miami prof and he taught me the meaning behind the scales. root 4/5 diminished ect as well as moving the patterns around not to mention the circle of fifths 🎉
I hope the lessons teach me how to apply sprinkles to my fretboard so I can understand the organised matrix of patterns hiding in plain sight.
It's really just improving your ear and technique, and there's ways to do that efficiently but not easily or quickly. Eventually you get to a place where you can hear a note and instantly play it without much thought
It’s all about intervals. Learn what intervals are used in different scale types (major,minor, etc) and you can start with any note and build scales that way

I've always loved practicing scales by ear. Pick a random place on the fretboard and play a major scale from there. Do. re, me, fa, so , la , ti, do is almost all you need to know. After your ear gets used to that, move on to the minor scale and graduate from there.

@@pixa4559 Dude made a short that kinda criticizes patterns on the fretboard, to overexplain how they're simply following the pattern of scales themselves, and how you can find these patterns along the fretboard, basically going in a circle that leads nowhere and does nothing to show you anything meaningful.
Hell, I'm sure I'm 90% wrong in understanding the point in this short, but that's entirely on the fault of the creator imo

I've seen others do it better.
He could have easily gone into the music theory and explained how all major scales are built in terms of tones and semitones. That way you can work out any major scale and then use fretboard knowledge to play it.

I remember following lessons when young. Thought I got the hang of it, and then they told me these patterns and learning them. 2 months later the guitar was gathering dust. Ridiculous amount of respect to the people who do learn this.

Best way I understand scales coming over from the trumpet was… just like when increasing/decreasing the airflow raises and decreases pitch with the same fingerings… on the guitar moving your hand up and down changes pitch and the fingerings are exactly the same.

These seems pretty cool. I remember the fundamental question I had when I was trying to learn guitar was “which note are in each fret ?” Nobody could answer precisely because they only knew hand positions. I still don’t play it, but this will be super useful when I decided to go back at it
Understanding the layout of the fretboard, major scale, minor scale, triads and how to apply them on the fretboard is a good place to begin.

Just learn the spacings of one of the natural scales like it's the back of your hand and remember where the root note repeats across the fret board. It's as simple as that, every single scale and mode can be found by ever so slightly altering one of the natural scales so if you know one of them thoroughly (They're basically the same) you can access any scales you want.
At that point you just have to practice to get the technical part down.

Best way to learn the scales is by practicing them. I have progressively improved at scales by playing backing tracks at the same time that I have the scale at hand and start improvising and creating my own patterns. Then I record my self and then I listen to it. I also listen to my fav bassists and see their techniques. I do this with the bass and guitar. It has been really helpful for me at least.

Learning cage method is great for muscle memory, once you learn theory you can play with the scales and add to your knowledge as you progress.
Nothing wrong with learning the “black dots” first cause it’s fun to be able to run through scales and jam over backing tracks and stuff.

Well no. You dont have to.
Every string on the guitar is about one and a half octaves so in away, you are playing a large piano. The thing is, the very same notes appear in different places on the fretboard. If you have learned the 'shortest route' to each one, learning to play a new song is damn easy. Marking the fretboard? Yea why not, it's a great way to know where you are regardless of scales 😊

Ive been learning piano and music theory for a few years now, its WILD how much that transfers to ther instruments. It gave me the drive to pick up my guitar again after like 20 years of it being in a closet lol.
Oh shiii, now I understand it, thanks😃. I mean you can tell any note by first string.
So I use this technique when tuning my guitar: I pluck the 6th string pressing on its 5th fret, and whatever note that makes, that's the note of the 5th string. Then I pluck the 5th string pressing on the 5th fret, and the note it makes is the note of the 4th string. So on and so forth (except for the 2nd string, to get the right note I press the 4th fret while plucking the 3rd string).
So I have no idea on how the guitar scale fully works, but looking at the fret diagram... yeah, it checks out. Whatever note I press on the right fret on the string I pluck, it's the note of the next string. So an A note on the E-string is the correct tune for the A-string.
Oh god I've learned the wrong way. I just picked a song I liked and learned it.. but it seems I lack the actual knowledge and techniques. I know hard songs but don't understand the basis behind it.
I like this and I leaned towards it but everyone knows you want to look away from the fretboard ASAP because when you do you actually know it and might be able to actually play it.

@@KingZack97 oh I don't doubt that, for sure learning things the proper way is the better method in the long run. For me, I just play guitar every now and then as a way to relax or just sing, so something quick and easy is fine for me at the moment.
As a jazz pianist trying to learn guitar. I do exactly this when i try to play on guitar. Thinking of the note then translate it.
I like ur science approach! So create a very simple formula that will help anyone memorize the major scale, go ahead! I have one, taught it to my wife- she not a guitarbplayer but knows the notes on the fretboard. We've been lied too.
Is the conventional tuning of the guitar the causing of the problem. It allows to create patterns. You just have to memorize 7 positions, and you're done. It is a blessing and a curse at the same time

Not that complicated dude. There's 12 notes per string, twice, and the strings are 4 notes apart except the 5th string is 5 notes. Don't buy this guy's tools he over complicates things.
You got it backwards, the 5th string is 4 notes apart from the 4th string. The others are 5 notes apart

I signed up for a guitar course a few years back and it went like this:
Chapter 1 was the parts of the guitar.
Chapter 2 was memorize the fretboard.
I'm still at chapter 2
this, i learned music and music theory with saxophone i know all the scales chord progressions et cetra but when i tried to learn guitar i only ever found videos about chords it made it really hard to understand the instrament no one really talks about what notes are played and how
I like the old way better than pasting stickers on the fretboard. That glue will damage the board. Also, your brain will eventually see the invisible dots the more you "PRACTICE". A good way to practice is with a song in the key of the scale being used.

I've always thought about this...
I use the pentatonic patterns as mental maps but I often end up playing what my mind hears. Sometimes my fingers know what to do without thinking about it. If I think then I often lose it. It’s kinda weird. Gotta be careful when wandering after imaginary melodies though cuz its easy to get lost and lose where I’m at. I drop pentatonic bread crumbs along the way. 😉
Me personally I could never put that many stickers or what ever they are on my guitar just to learn scales

Scales with patterns are an easy start as our brain likes patterns and shapes. There is nothing wrong with it. The question is if one can evolve to a more complex pattern and so forth.
Our brain will always organize the threat board, piano keys or valves in patterns.

Just practice 0,2,3,5 on any string and try to guess what comes next 4 times. Then start with 1,3,4,6 and do again. Then 5 on one string then 0 on string on right of it. Pretty soon you'll start seeing patterns.

Any aspiring guitarist out there, if you can, try learn scale from, drum roll please, a piano! Of any kind of music instrument, piano has a concise way of learning within relationship between accidentals (flats or sharps) easier! And guys, do not stop with the pattern, but also try to develop a 1-3-5-7 know how, so that is going to be easier for you to navigate through the neck! I’m in the state of understanding the perfect 5th and major 3rd from all the scale (e.g. 3rd of C is E and 3rd of A is C# or Db, to name a few) and it does help a lot for my filling, and learning Greek Scale really really does help! Stay curious, folks!

You have to know the fretboard before you start reading guitar sheet music (which is for 99% of music extremely simple to read).

The best way to use music theory is learn the name of the notes, learn the notes on the fret board and the pattern of scales and modes which are all from the major scale for example play a Gmajor scale, now play the same notes from A to A and that's A Dorian ABCDEF"GA if you the Gmajor scale notes from Dcto D is D mixolydian DEF#GABCD once you've got that down everything else makes so much more sense. Play thinking notes not frets

Learning the notes intervals im their scales and relationships tells you, where to put your fingers. And works in every tuning
Basically, yall need to learn about transposing, but in the music theory sense. It literally helps you transcend all gutair tunings and even intices you try out new ones because two intervals that are normally too difficult to play together can become right next to eachother
After this point, the shapes start showing themselves to you. You dont need a graph anymore you can build them yourselves just by knowing what notes come before or after the others

Once you see the notes on the fretboard its such a wow holy shit moment.
It al clicked for me when I was memorising the top 2 strings. I ended on the E note (12th fret, A string) and then went to practicing the C scale and I noticed how the B C (E string) notes were right above the E (A string) note and that same thing also occurs on the A string 12th fret.
Then it clicked. I was like OMG everything just repeats, its patterns all over the place. Its soooooo easy to memorize all notes now. Just memorize the pattern and then you have it all over the place.
