They have avant garde stuff, but their best stuff, IMO, is their post bm or "blackgaze" stuff, like this song. Finisterre is probably their best work, IMO, and that's mostly post bm / "blackgaze". (Blackgaze is basically black metal version of shoegaze, they are actually very similar genres with the fuzzy guitar and everything)

I am hyped for Noktvrn, Finisterre a few years ago, was a Masterpiece! A good example of an Avan Garde metal band is IGORRR, he is really fucking Avant Garde...
In terms of outrageous band names: Nothing beats Czech grindcore band Destructive Explosion of Anal Garland, British goregrind band Abörted Hitler Cöck and American sort of noise / stoner rock band Gay Witch Abortion. The latter is the ultimate triumvirate of offending Catholics.
Brilliant band that I would be a much bigger fan of, if I listened to them more often. Somehow they don't appear a lot in my playlist, though. No idea why. Guess, it's the average length of their songs and the music itself. Nothing you can just listen to "on the fly".
You already did a live video of that band. They have tons of better songs than this one here, imho. Check out "Der Stille Fluss", they got a live video rehearsal of that one. It's much, much better.

I rate Thy Catafalque as a Avant-garde project, most important thing is if the music is good enough to listen to.
