The symbolism of Thorn Birds is that Ralph is the bird with his heart beating for God and Maggie and he is torn between both worlds. He succumbs to a slow death over the years and, therefore, he is the bird that is crying for love for Maggie and God and in his chest is the thorn before he dies. I also like the scene where Stanwyck sees him nude, and he reminds her of her youth as a young woman and that her age has caught up with because men are no longer attracted to her.

Saw in 1983 the TV series. It was one the best I have seen. Never forgot the story and this secne...so sad, so touching ! Both actors were fantastic !
