    Hey hank I’m a Detroit guru. Your never gonna get anything in the cylinders dumping it on top, just draining to oil pan. Either have to pull injectors and fill or you can remove them 4 square side covers on side of block and access the sides of the liners with the intake ports, you can spray penetrating oil in them ports and sides of the pistons pretty good. I recommend kroil, not biased but it’s the best penetrating oil I’ve ever seen. Also please remove rocker shaft bolts and roll back the rocker arms and make sure the injector plungers aren’t stuck and are returning and working right. Stuck plungers will give you no fuel or cause the rack to stick again. Spray out fuel lines from head to injectors and I always take the penetrating oil with the straw and fill the injectors through the fuel line fittings to flush out any trash or old fuel. Once you free the injectors keep filling with oil and take a mallet and tap the plunger springs to work them till they start working properly. Detroits have no intake valves so you cant remove an intake and pour in fluid either. If you do get it running put vise grips on rack so you can manually control rack, sometimes the governor can stick from sitting and still cause it to runaway. If it runs away there should be a flap door in intake on blower you can trip and cut the air off, or find a board or something over it to cut air, or you can shoot a fire extinguisher in it and it’ll cut it off, but don’t do that if you wanna run it again, fire extinguisher ingredients are nasty in an engine haha. If you can break it loose and free the injectors properly it will no doubt run. Good luck and I enjoy the videos.

    If you want stuff to get on top of the piston, you have to go through the intake or exhaust. Since the exhaust was uncovered that is probably how the water got in. Pour a gallon of diesel down the exhaust and let it set awhile.

    Anything you put into the top of the engine under the valve cover goes straight to the oil pan. You have to put it in thru the intake or the fuel injectors to get it on top of the pistons. That’s why Hank heard it when the mystery oil was put in.

    My 72-31 terex loader is a 24 volt system. It looks like you guys had two 12 volt batteries in parallel if I saw right. The forward, reverse, neutral shifter lever is on the left side of the sterling column just under the steering wheel. Make SURE it’s in neutral!!! The levers to the right of the seat as seated are the boom raise/lower and bucket tilt levers. Make SURE they are in neutral as well. The boom raise lever has a float detent when pushed all the way forward. The levels DO stay in place unlike modern machines which will spring back when released. If you haven’t made sure the fuel rack is free, do so first to avoid a runway. Detroit are known for running away if you aren’t aware. On the left (blower/air intake) side, is the air intake cutoff mechanism. Make sure it is latch open. It will flip shut via spring pressure when tripped. If you experience a runaway, THIS is how it can be shut down in an emergency. The gas pedal is on the far right side as seated. Pull it all the way towards you as seated to shut the loader down. It’ll stay in that detent, until popped down into the idle/run position. Make sure it’s in idle and not shutdown when you get the motor to crank or you won’t get any fuel.
    Good luck guys!! I look forward to seeing the next videos.

    On a Detroit, you pretty much have to pull the rockers and injectors to get anything down into the cylinders. These are two stroke engines, so no intake valves. And you can’t go thru the exhaust because liquid doesn’t flow uphill.

I'll give you some pointers when working on Machinery outside 1 put a tarp underneath where you're working 2 take pictures before you take something apart 3 get you some cheap magnetic bowls to keep your nuts and bolts in. Two of the machines I worked on during the earliest part of my short Air Force stint, were two Terrible Rex loaders with a forklift setup on them that operated like a loader bucket. They had Detroit 4-53 engines for power, and a transmission with a torque converter.
    I do remember that one got the standard 10 wt hydraulic oil drained from it's transmission, and replaced with 5056 cherry juice aircraft hydraulic oil. It pulled better with that experiment, to be later sent for decommission because it was a 1976, and the kingpin bushings were worn out, in 1985. Tear for terrible, rex. T-Rex like the dinosaurs they are, and they leak dinosaur juice! Terex is tear rex.
    Compared to the Case 10k and 13k newer units, the Terex was more of a bitch to operate because the front steers ahead of the cab and kingpin articulation, so you have to predict more where the forks were aiming, whereas the Case had the cab above the kingpin and the rear articulation steered behind the kingpin. The Case machines had a quieter Case 6 cylinder four stroke diesel related to the farm tractors of the 1982 to 1987 time frame.
    They have a steering centering valve on the right side structure wall just behind the kingpin. If it's out of adjustment with good parts, the operator has to constantly correct with bumping the steering wheel away from the direction the valve is out of adjustment. I remember getting a cussing in the Air Force tech school lab one day about letting a student correct the adjustment, then adjust for the next part of the class to learn.......... Was one and a half turns really that bad?🤣😡

    • @patrickmoran8790
      @patrickmoran8790 9 місяців тому

      And the other one needed a governor replacement in 1986, and Frank didn't adjust it out correctly. The sound of a 4-53 on a runaway is memorable, but it didn't splatter while I was standing of the other side of a machine with a large metal chassis and deck.
