It was revealed that Scar's name, before he got the scar, was Taka.
Taka means garbage.
So, naming your children King (Mufasa) and Garbage (Taka) kinda makes a kid wanna change his name.
Xanthe Inoue Hahahahaha. "Son, I name you KING. And you my second son... You are garbage"
I think Mufasa's death was worse than Bambi's mom. Bambi's mom's death happened off screen. We actually saw Mufasa fall *in slow motion* into the stampede below.
as a kid, I didn't realize that he died at first. I saw him fall, but cats land on their feet. A stampede didn't mean anything to me. In retrospect, his death is pretty horrifying. I was just sad and confused as a kid.
@@Flufferz626 I was just about to comment on that. So much worse!
"What happened to Snooki?"
"She's probably our next President"

Love how the director doesn't look any older than the guys that saw his film as kids :)
I know this is old, but I just gotta applaud Rob's impression of James Earl Jones, on point!
I so want to see Hugh Jackman in an honest trailer commentary for Logan
I would love to see that too! I guess there might be a sliver of a chance to get him since they did get Ryan Reynolds who's a fan of Honest Trailers and both Jackman & Reynolds are pretty cool dudes who love to interact with fans so maybe at some point he might be interested, who knows.
This director doesn't get enough credit as he should do, he directed one of the greatest animated films of all time, if not THE greatest...oh and Stuart Little.
Jackeroose98 Agreed. He made a film that's arguably better than anything Hayao Miyazaki has ever made. There's no animated film better than The Lion King imo.
Jake G 2187 I will admit, I am a little triggered, because Hayao Miyasaki has made some damn fine movies in his career, Spirited Away is one of my all time favourite films since I was pretty young, but The Lion King is still a phenomenal masterpiece.
Jackeroose98 Spirited away had a bigger budget and Tier 1 animators tho..remmber that Lion King was made with a B team of animators not Disneys best.
Jackeroose98 Lol Sorry if I triggered you. I LOVE Spirited Away as well. It's my 6th favorite film of all time. That's in general, not just animated. But The Lion King just has this aura about it. When Mufasa confronts Simba late in the film and tells him he is more than what he's become, I get this feeling inside that I've never felt before. The score, the beautiful visuals, the powerful voice acting by James Earl Jones. It's like the stars all aligned to make the most perfect scene. I'm always transfixed by the stars and background when I watch The Lion King. The atmosphere just takes me over. The Lion King is with out a doubt my favorite film of all time.
Mentions Kimba the white lion
Director has left the call
They'll always deny it. Even when they changed one freaking letter to make it Simba. Great movie, but at least they should be big enough to admit the origins.
Guys.... Simba means Lion, Kimba just changed the first letter of an african word of lion. The similarities aren’t that big...
Kevin Liu i reccomend looking deeper into the issue, you’ll find the similarities aren’t that big
@Emmanuel Brijandez have you ever read Hamlet. Or do you just repeat after Disney like a parrot?
I have heard that the song in the beginning actually means something like "It's a lion, yes it's a lion"
MrBanankartong
The lyrics could say anything and we wouldn't know it.
"Look, there goes a lion (yes there's a lion, a lion)" or something to that effect. Which is the funniest thing, and makes sense now that we know he only had what the director told him the movie was about to go off.
Besides being my absolutely favorite Honest Trailer, this dialogue with the director, Rob Minkoff, there in person taking it all in a humorous way was so good. Great job to the Honest Trailer guys and what a good sport Rob Minkoff was. The Lion King has stood the test of time. That is truly the sign of an incredible movie.
Are you kidding! Be Prepared is easily my favorite song of the Lion King! SO much power and fury! A little adrenaline rush!
The beginning lyrics are not Swahili. They're Zulu. And don't look them up, just enjoy the mystery. Because tbh they're pretty dull in English.
They're FUNNY. The opening line is (loosely) is "hey dad it's a lion"!
Yes!! And as a kid,one thing that bothered the fuck out of me was...Hakuna matata does NOT mean...no worries!! It means...NO TROUBLE!!! which they could've just said.the music would've been the same!
@@superstarreviews9937 It means no worries. You probably just found a different translation
@@fuzzyotterpaws4395 it means No Problem. In Tanzania and Zanzibar its an everyday phrase.
Rob Minkoff
just has that Disney personallity to him. so wholesome and postive
You guys should do Disney's animated Atlantis movie, because it was freaking underrated.
MrQuickshot117 That was legitimately in my top 3 fav Disney movies when I was a kid. It is very imaginative and has a sense of wonder and exploration to it that no other movie can quite match.
I loved it too and haha I remember having a crush on that mechanic girl. xD (Yes I know she's a cartoon character lmao).
Vinnie was my all time favorite character in that movie.
"Fuses, wicks, glue, and...paper clips, big ones. You know just, eh, office supplies."
"BOOM! No more Chinese Laundry."
*Bridge blows up: "Okay, now you can go."
Milo: "Great, well do you have any suggestions!?"
Vinnie: "Yeah, don't get shot!"

That'd be cool, but...wrong channel. (Though you probably already knew that)
Everything wrong with..... is CinemaSins this is Screen Junkies who do honest trailers i'll admit they are similar in what they do but different channels non the less.
That's a guy who is really proud of what he's made and rightly so, while being so humble too. I really hope he gets to do more stuff.
Yeah, an animated wolf movie that takes place in Mongolia? I'm intrigued.
yeah, he should definitely be proud of having made this movie what it is and with soul the message, and I would definitely like him to be back in another The Lion King project, if possible
There are actual lion prides where two or three brothers run it together so, it's not unusual.
I'm surprised they didn't make a movie of when Mufasa and Scar were kids.
- There's a book that speaks of Mufasa and Scar as youngs. It's called "The Lion King: A Tale of Two Brothers", it's written by Alex Simmons
- It would be cool and different to see Mufasa and Scar as kids in a movie
@@Brand0n3500Official people say that about the lion guard too though. I'm not sure its canon since none of the movie sequels show Kion or his friends.
He looks like an older Ryan Reynolds
Exactly my thoughts when I first saw him. Also his voice, reminds me a lot of Ryan Reynolds' as well :)
Disney gave this guy a job as an in-between-artist at the age of 21. If that doesn't scream talented, idk what does.
the animation industry puts focus on talent, not on degrees. The more you know~

The top three sad parent child moments are No.1 Littlefoots mother getting ripped apart and killed and nearly eaten on screen and saying her last words to her son. No2 Dumbo having a mother that can barely touch, see or hold him do to her being locked up. No.3 simba seeing his father fall to his death and having to feel its his fault.
Never seen 1, only 2 and 3
(Which i completely agree with), may have to watch that 1st film, see how it goes
MyOpinion DontDis
It's actually a series called the Land Before Time. It's aimed towards young children and follows the story of a young brontosaurus (?) named Littlefoot. I believe that scene happens in the first episode. Correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while since I've seen it.
it was a movie. then had 13 direct to dvd sequels and a tv series after it
Mike0908 no you're right, I was teen by the time they announced the first "sequel", too old to be objective on comparisons, they just seemed boring but I still can watch the first one, beautiful.
This might be one of the best movies ever
No children's movie would be complete without an animal's "do me" eyes...
The Lion King honest trailer is still my favorite one, it always has me laughing to tears.
"Be Prepared" is actually my favorite, it's fantastic.
Fully agreed, but I can on the other hand fully subscribe to the notion that for some it is the weakest of all those songs, because the other songs are also fantastic!
so, scar’s real name is “taka”.
“taka” means -> waste.
*no shit he became evil*
lol, that wasn't written by the original staff, but by independently contracted children's book writers that Disney hired--likely through 3rd party publishing. That's why they didn't include any of that material in the later adaptations. It's not cannon.
I still don't get the existence of that TV show The Lion Guard.
Da Dragon Durp I'm forced to watch it since my little brother adores that show
Scar actually gave himself that name when he was a kid, according to one of the Lion King books Disney put out. Even back then he was super salty that his father preferred Mufasa over him, so he tried to make his brother get into a fight with a giant water buffalo. Things went wrong, the buffalo charged at him, he had to be rescued by Mufasa, and he got that scar. So, he changed his name so as to always remember that day (...as if the scar wasn't enough)
Len Draugathiel i think they gave him the name "mud" or "dirt"... Which in african it is "Taka"
True, Their parents showed serious favoritism, Mufasa means king and Scar's real name, Taka, means Trash
this man looks like he could be ryan renalds dad
Tbh at first glance I thought it was him and I was like
"Hold up, that ain't right" 😂😂😂
"Do you wanna apologize?"
Me: *it's too late to apologize, it's too laaaaate*
I really really hope I look that good at 50. I'll probably need Lion King money...
This director was cool.
He directed what is likely the most memorable animated movie of all time, he has nothing to fear from a few jokes.
CidGuerreiro1234 Directing one of the most memorable animated films could certainly give someone quite the ego boost too. Had that happened, his reaction to the Honest Trailer could have gone horribly. Thankfully he did have a great sense of humor, lol.
Do The Prince of Egypt!
Kristoffer Butler ok I just watched the first bit and I already recognize the story, I've known it forever and I love it (it's in the Quran too :p) I'm gonna watch the rest now, but it's not following it exactly, a bit changed to make a cooler story and I don't mind :p
If you enjoy it (which I think you will because people of all faiths and those that don't have one enjoy it), then I'm glad I pointed you in its direction.
SalmaX33 SalmaX33 I hope you like it! It's by far my favourite movie based on a religious story; usually, the writers/directors simplify the story and characters to the point that no one acts like real people (because being a true believer means you never make mistakes or stress about what path to take, right? Right?), but this movie makes the people relatable and their actions understandable. Also, the music is quite good. :) Now you have me curious about how similar the versions of the story are between the Old Testament and the Quran... To Google!
Rob Minkoff is a legend and seems like a really nice person...
@screenjunkies just a note to the director, the language in the "circle of life " is NOT Swahili. "Hakuna matata" and various of the character names are, but not the song. As a Tanzanian I feel that needed to be made clear.
Keithustus
people keep saying it’s in Zulu, so prob Zulu (correct me if I’m wrong)
@@Keithustus the language in the song is Zulu. The phrases and character names are Swahili e.g Hakuna matata, pumba, rafiki and even simba

I thought you were talking about Mufasa for a second, and I was like, there's no way that guy is over 25.
Scar's real name was Susan.
Scar's birth name, Taka, is the Swahili word for "waste",

"no it's not. I speak horse. He says his name is Susan, and he wants you respect his life choices"
I love how much of a good sport he is
At Mufasa's death, "do you want to apologize?" I would answer no, because in his shoes, I'd be responsible for making all of you grow up ;)
Tough love, man. We grow around pain. I think stories with loss like this really build us.
I really like this guy! He seems so fascinating and easy to listen to.

I'd love to see more of these Honest Reactions! Maybe Leo and Kate for the Titanic Honest Trailer or Stephenie Meyer for the Twilight ones hehe.

Allen Douangchak the honest trailer for the first Twilight film starts with "from one of the shittiest authors of all time"... so maybe inviting her wouldn't be such a good idea haha
Be prepared is my favorite song in lion king
Why don't Disney remake emperor new groove , treasure planet etc. Why remake movies that have done well . its like disney is showing off its budget and technology
They should remake The Black Cauldron... a GOOD remake. The original was a travesty.
I'm surprised that Rob doesn't know the translation of "Nants Ingonyama." It is as follows:
"Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba [Here comes a lion, Father]
Sithi uhm ingonyama [Oh yes, it's a lion]Nants ingonyama bagithi baba
Sithi uhhmm ingonyama
IngonyamaSiyo Nqoba [We're going to conquer]
Ingonyama
Ingonyama nengw' enamabala [A lion and a leopard come to this open place][Chant repeats]"
Edit: The chant is Zulu, not Swahili.
"Nants Ingonyama" is Zulu. Also, as far as I know, TLK is the first ever Disney film to be totally dubbed in Zulu.
Ingonyama is Zulu for Lion.
Here is an interesting Quora answer on the chant. This person says that, in this context, it's no ordinary lion, as "Ingonyama" is used to refer to a Zulu king. Also, only royals can wear leopard print (www.quora.com/What-are-the-lyrics-of-the-Lion-King-introduction-What-do-they-mean/answer/David-Barnes-76?srid=RjQl).
I know, but the songs, as far as I know, contain Zulu lyrics, while most of the character's names are Swahili (Mufasa = king, Simba = lion, Sarabi = Mirage, Pumbaa = Simple Minded...).
His name suggests that he often protests people wearing furs...
But yeah, he co-directed this at 32? Crap... Time to do something with my life, I guess..
if you want to feel even worse Orson Welles made Citizen Kane when he was 26
I wonder if Adum from YMS has seen this for his Lion King review
The Lion King is still my favorite movie❤️
19:00 Lion king director: I gotta go
Others: *Laughing*
Me: Seriously?
He doesn't even try to hide the fact that they ripped it off. It's almost hilarious.
lol, really the stories themselves are nothing alike if you've watched both movies (and the Kimba series). The key similarities are some of the character designs and screen shot concepts. He probably said "I gotta go" because people are so triggered by it that it's sparked online battles. So yeah, that's a pretty funny reaction in that regard.
we did a play about Lion King and it has been a memory to be truly remembered. All the songs make my heart fill with joy. Oh, how I miss the times! I played as Banzai haha
Scar's real name is Taka.
And Treasure Planet is awesome! How dare you include it in the downfall.
In Swahili, as a verb it means to "want" or "wish", while as a noun it means "waste"--as in trash. This is established in a short barely cannonical book "The Six New Adventures of The Lion King." But a lot of people accept this as cannon.
In a way, Scar's real name is also a really mean nickname.
Taka was from Kimba the white Lion. which is what Lion King borrowed from.
When you realize that Darth Vader, Ferris Bueller, Alferd (Batman's butler, specifically), and Gomez from the Addams Family are all in Lion King.
Man, I think My Lullaby from the lion king 2 is one of my favorites from the trilogy, I just love Zira's voice and the melody is just really nice. From the original movie, I like the ending song a lot. I don't really remember how it's called (might be a reprise of circle of life actually), but again the melody is awesome. For 1 1/2 anything with Timon singing is hilarious.
Milla Cabral "He Lives in You." is the name of the song from Lion King 2.
@@ayiciamurray9079 That's called "Not one of us". All the songs in the first two LK movies were good.

"Everything the light touches is ours, Simba" Disney was flexing with that line
In canonical Lion King books it said that Scar had a much more normal name similar to Mufasa’s (I can’t remember it exactly) and he chose to be called Scar as a reminder of his failure as he attempted to get Mufasa killed but the plan backfired and gave him hi scar
Be Prepared was my favorite song 😏. The whole soundtrack was amazing for this movie. Oh and Mufasa's death scarred me as a child lol (I saw it when it was new, in theaters).
That would be really weird to have worked on The Lion King. Everybody sees it as a classic, but for Rob Minkoff, he's seen it in production from start to finish.
Followed by it's downfall? But I loved Emperor's New Groove, Brother Bear, and Atlantis. I'm so offended lmao
I've never seen Brother Bear, but I loved Emperor's New Groove and Atlantis was good too.
I believe they were talking about how all those movies didn’t do well in the box office. Almost all the movies shown in that second are I love but a few bad choices mixed with bad luck made it hard for them to make a little more money with those movies. Hence it being the downfall...
Scar's actual name was *Taka*
Oh my God. It WASN'T Taka. I would've thought this very interview would have finally made people realize that it was NOT Taka. I mean, _if it was_ then this director right here in this freakin' video interview would have _said_ so - as he was clearly and directly asked what was Scar's real name!! He did not say it's Taka. Therefore it was never Taka. Pay. Attention.

afro symphony I remember seeing that scene when I was younger. It felt sooooo awkward. I had no idea why though. Innocent me. LOL.
i was at a different point when i saw the lion king and didnt really get the same impact from mufasa's death that i can remember, but the music department of my high school took a trip to New York a few years back to see the musical version. We had a sort of behind the scenes tour before hand, though, during which they explained the swords and costume choices of more human characters. it was after that tour that watching the musical left a VERY different feeling than i expected to get out of the musical version of an old disney classic. That's when the "realness" of the story really sunk in...
I've always been a life-long _Lion King_ fan, but I never really appreciated the 'realness' of the story until I started getting into sub-Saharan African music (particularly South African music) and realizing how much they were influential to the film and Broadway show's soundtrack, because once you actually learn the words to the various isiZulu songs and lyrics you realize how deep the themes run (especially in the Broadway show's 'exclusive' songs) and it just makes the whole thing that much more powerful.
