Crypt of the Necrodancer - Mausoleum Mash (1-3 with real voice shopkeeper)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- One of my favorites from the soundtrack, and pretty much the main theme, playing on the title screen. But Freddy Merchantry only joins during the level!
The break at 0:42 looks strange without annotations:
0:42 "I've been told I seem to be looking at something while singing. Well..."
0:46 "On my left is the waveform of the shopkeeper's voice, which I look at to know when my breaks stop."
0:52 "And here's the vocal chart I refer to for note sequences and lengths and knowing when I get to breathe. Also lyrics."
0:58 "We're about here."

+Geralt Ofrivia Oh my, that's a terribly specific compliment!
I've never heard anything quite like it. This video and all your other Necrodancer vids should have 2 million views each, not 2000. Brilliant! I thought it is impossible to sing this with human voice, but you did! And it sounds tons better than the original. They should have really hired you to do the shopkeeper versions :D I like your voice and personality that you show while singing. Just saying. Maybe you have other projects in mind, just like this one? It would be great to see more of your content, and hear more of your voice. Thanks for the Necrodancer videos. I loved them all.
the8bitdrummer played improv to this video a while back, and remembering how good it sounded made me dig through his past broadcasts just to find who was singing. I'm very glad I found it, because you're amazing.
I've heard the8bitdrummer before; I'd like to see that cover for myself! Do you recall which broadcast it was?
+Nicolas Daoust www.twitch.tv/the8bitdrummer/v/20985951?t=2h59m10s This is the video and the time where he starts playing this song (his broadcasts are about 4 hours long)
That was a lot of fun to watch, thanks! Funny how he actually recognized my version and sang along.
It sounds like you're constantly yawning XD
+Alexander Robertson Well it's not due to boredom for sure. o_O
+Alexander Robertson Seeing someone yawn like that would be interesting. I would....I would be impressed if someone could yawn like that.
+Alexander Robertson Actually, the reason for this is because when you're classically trained to sing, they teach you to use a part of your body called the soft palate, by raising your soft palate, it can create a sound similar to that of yawning, but at the same time, by mastering this you produce a much more acoustic sound while singing. Also, credits to you, Nicolas, if you see this. You perform AMAZINGLY on these songs dude.
Seems legit! I'm not classically trained, but I do recall being taught to "yawn into my notes" at some point. And thanks for the praise!
Unfortunately I can't find the comment anymore, but you asked for tunes with similarly fake vocals in them for you to cover once you're done with Necrodancer a while back, may I suggest one of these 2 from Battleblock Theater? I know they don't have quite the crazy range of Necrodancer but still.

+Metaknightkirby2 I'll listen to them; thanks!
Dude youre amazing. This is my favorite shopkeeper song. Its awesome to see your performance in person instead of just the game. Excellent!
amazing voice!!!! i was first love when i heard the shopkeeper's voice in the game, now is second
Best one yet. You're really getting the hang of this
How the hell did you have the lung capacity for this!? This is madness!
not to mention how much strain iy puts on your throat
I like how you turn the page, but are still looking at the page on the right afterwards ;)
Well-spotted! But would you believe there's a perfectly reasonable explanation?
This version of The Art of War has the original Chinese on the left page, with naïve English equivalent words interspersed. On the right, aligned with the brute translation, are the resulting well-formed English sentences, which are more relevant to me.
(I guess the left side was more interesting to the Chinese friend I borrowed the book from.)
I tried, strained my voice something /fierce/. Good job, man!
You're such a cool guy. :D
*HUUUAP*
*Click*
Noice.
:D sing shopkeeper SING
Il faut que tu continues vraiment, j'ai hâte de voir le mod sur steam. +1 abo :)
Ça s'en vient, dans Amplified!
Oh man! Would love to hear you do Dance of the decorous (3-2 Cold).
Wh-why have you stopped playing that wonderful music?
Your vocal chart looks very interesting! It does seem a lot more practical for this specific task than the typical staff notation. Is that a standardized notation itself, used by singers or something? Or is it your own design?
Also, as always, best wishes for the protection of your vocal cords!
+guiltriple It's nothing standard; I made it up when I couldn't follow the Kyrie part of Mozart's Requiem on the regular chart, reading the little notes with their little stems between the little horizontal lines.
Dat art of war tho! :D
Discovery the game two weeks ago, and you today. You are amazing man! I though some of these notes were Impossible. Amazing!
진짜 진짜 진짜 멋있어요!
amazing, from 1:15 it's incredible
This sounds better than the game but also somehow weirder
THE ART OF WAR... damn good pick~~~ -everyone 2015
amazing covers, when will you sing cosplaying as the shopkeeper?
+platy95 I'll tell you this: I at least looked through my drawers. But I couldn't find anything remotely resembling the color or shape of that getup. I'm not even sure what it is.
Nicolas Daoust Now that I look at it, it is a weird get up haha
I came from the future to say he is the very shopkeeper
@@vincentvalentine1877 Im from even further in the future and can confirm
1:16 une de tes plus belles montées 👏
Encore à ce jour!
A certified top dog moment.
Do Stone Cold. Now. Yes, I'm evil. Yes, I hate you. No, I'm not The Devil Himself. Yes, I work under him. No, I don't want you to die. Yes, I do want you to suffer.
Bleah! Still can't do 2:17 properly.
This is both awesome and unnatural xD Don't damage your voice doing this weird crap.
On the one hand: sure.
On the other hand: hey, what else am I gonna do with them?
you have wonderful~~ voice :D
I'm waiting for 3-2 cold. :)
Oh my God, i really love this level with you. Maybe i'll try to play on your voice haha !
7 left to go! Make the most of them
Taïtelscrïnn
First I want to thank you, I love your stuff! :D You are so funny and awesome at what you're doing! ^^ Secondly I would like to ask if this is just some thing you're doing or if you indeed are the real shopkeeper? I've been looking around the internet but I can't seem to find any credit for the voice of the shopkeeper.
+Sweden no Otakuelite Ha ha! Thanks. There's no credit for the shopkeeper because no one is singing; it's a synthetic voice! I guess, however, that you could say I'm the "realest" Shopkeeper around.
Rad
awesome buddy
Wow, great vocal skills! Good taste in books too :)
wow
Wouldn't it be easier to sing by standing :)? ++aside from that nice work
You'd expect so! But for long recording sessions, I'm much more comfortable sitting, and I'm lucky in that my singing seems unaffected.
1:18 are you even real lol
I *love* how that part came out!
I keep seeing it happen on accident, but it would be amazing if the screen thumped to the beat.
When you had the art of war in your hand I realized something, I forgot to do my winter reports and projects.
*cries
you're so cool man :D
Nice
hey i think 3-3 is missing from the playlist?
I... er... never got around to making a video for it, nor for zone 5. ó_ò
For the AMPLIFIED expansion, I revisited 10 of the 11 songs to improve on them (1-3 I was unable to improve!), and recorded the 4 missing ones part-by-part, rather than in a one-take video. Then I pretty much closed the book on all that! ...Until last week's Cadence of Hyrule release.
I have uploaded the 3-3 studio versions (hot and cold), though!

hey that makes sense. Also when I went to reply to this I got a cadence of hyrule ad, neat
Here from the 8bitdrummer.
Oh did he cover one of my covers again? I had so much fun watching that some years ago! (But I lost the video.)
Remind me, why do I constantly kill the shopkeeper?
J'vais faire un peu de pub pour toi sur notre page facebook TeamKChoucroute, si ça peut t'apporter du public ! :D

C'est énorme ce que tu fais, continue !
+Kazey Ça fait plaisir! Et votre description me représente bien.
This is so amazing. Thank you for making these videos. Made my day.
We love you Freddie Merchantry
Looking at the content that you create in the battle with the Necrodancer is not enough a shop. Or can you improvise?) Last Dance (Necrodancer Fight 2nd Phase)
- оne of the best tracks in my opinion
Oh I love the boss music myself! But I thought about it years ago and decided I would not invent a shopkeeper-style part for those tracks.
The base principle of this video series is that the songs were written with absolutely no consideration for an eventual real singer, and that I sing them with absolutely no consideration for that fact. Writing myself a custom part would defeat the purpose, as I could decide how much challenge and wackiness I put in and how much I play to my strengths.
I wonder whether my musings on whether and when you breathe contributed to the helpful "BREATHING TIME" annotations or not, but at least now I know. :D
They did!
I really enjoyed these videos, keep up the great work!
Still huge dude ! :D and still in your sauna :3
i would say im waiting for my favorite track for the game, if my favorite track wasn't a boss track, other than that, 1-2, which you've already done
for you to do that is
Sun Tsu sang that, and I think he knows a little more about singing than you do pal, because he invented it, then he perfected it so that no man could beat him in the ring of honor
Yeah but he died before audio recording, so there!
TIME WELL SPENT SIR!
This must be very straining; one can literally see the veins in your neck popping out a bit at times (like 1:50).
+CaptainOfDoom And you can see my whole body shaking at 1:19!
Godly Just Beatiful.
that neck vein though.
Oh gods, please do 2-3 Portabellohead! It's my favorite song from the game.
There you go!
ua-cam.com/video/aFOyOffxilU/v-deo.html
YEAH
omg, I'm in love.
Bravo!
I don't blame you if you never touch zone 3's music. Despite it being my favorite, it's not humanly possible to hit some of those notes. At best, you'd be forced to resort to post-processing to skew your voice into the impossibly high range of, for example, Stone Cold.
He did 4-1, so you know.
Gdttd Eggegdh
Yeah, somehow. I find the "rapid fire" notes are possible to do if you do what Smooth McGroove does and purse your lips between each note. The only problem with that is that you will sound like a rapid fire sheep.
4-1 seems easy to me by now, I might even re-record it on a whim.
+Torcularis I'm training specifically for 3-1's high C, which is the highest note in the soundtrack by far (excluding 4-3, which I lowered by one octave for a short sequence most professional sopranos couldn't touch). I can hit it some days; right now while typing this, I even went slightly higher! But nailing the sequence on video after 2 minutes of singing, not to mention making it sound good, will require luck, and probably patience (more than I've needed so far, I mean).
I'm adamantly against post-processing for this series of songs: while the core concept is hearing the shopkeeper's melodies as interpreted by a human voice, I feel that part of the appeal is the struggle and the strain. (Of course, I use an equalizer and some reverb and volume control.) Pitch correction or adjustment would detract from that, going for the aforementioned very precise and technical Smooth-McGroove-like sound (where the goal, admittedly, is imitating chiptune music as perfectly as possible, not following a wild shopkeeper along his moods).
Instead, I fully expose myself: you can hear imprecisions (dare I say false notes?), particularly during fast sequences. But more damningly during some held notes, such as the flat-sounding last note of 2-1; I didn't have the heart (or the endurance!) to restart the song over that after so many attempts. Anyway, even the original shopkeeper is occasionally flat or sharp or mistimed; it's part of his wild charm.
So, yeah: 3-1 is coming, and it's gonna be real.
Nicolas Daoust
You, sir, are a madman. I love it. Godspeed.
Still excellent in 2020 🔥
I agree!
My in-game voice is mostly re-recorded, as I was able to improve on my live takes with meticulous multiple takes.
But 1-3 went in the game straight from this video, as-is; there's something in its raw energy, its desperate effort, that couldn't be matched in the safety of the studio.
@@NicD Did 4-1 get in without editing the hard part? :o I found the way you solved it to be genius!
If you must know, I recorded 4-3 and 4-1's audio first in multiple takes, and only then filmed the performance! Because I naïvely thought things had to be done this way.
But one-take Necrodancer videos are *really* hard to lipsync perfectly, so from zone 1 on, I switched to recording video and audio at the same time *to make things easier*. Which makes for a better show anyway, as I think the filmed performance is more important than the audio quality. (And in the case of 1-3 I somehow got the best of both worlds!)
However, for an upcoming collaboration this May, I recorded the audio first so that it's as good as possible, and then lipsynched to it for the video. Priorities!
Oh! I should add: if you want to see the throat-slapping with no "edit", it's back in 4-2, with outtakes to boot!
ua-cam.com/video/OxZK1pEM8BA/v-deo.html
Do a 1-4 PLEASE!!!
Oh, right, there's that!
Nicolas Daoust It is the most melodic one :D I keep humming it all day.
This song is only good with the shopkeeper
this is awesome!
waiting for 5-1
