  • I was asked by several folks to show how the Keychain Tripod device is made. I make two versions of it using two methods. One with fancypants tools and one with common everyday tools. I also throw in a never before seen Ferrobiner. A combo Ferro rod and carabiner. Super long video, skip over the stuff you dont need.

    Its downright ridiculous how thankful I am when there is a new video of yours to watch. You just flat out need your own daily television show, brother. Talk about current events, interview guests, work in the shop, and have fun in the woods. I wouldn't miss an episode. Keep up the great work, Dave!

      Jamie Hitt Very cool Jamie! Im glad you like the videos that much. Man, Ive had
      small offers for bit parts on shows and it never worked out. I almost
      got a show another time and it didnt work out. Maybe something will surface one day.
      Take care and Thanks for watching my friend.

      Big fish in small pond beats small fish in big pond - David you are a master at what you do and your audience knows that. Out in telly-land the sharks would have you for a between meals snack. We subscribers value you enormously, just keep on doing what you do so well.

      Robert Seviour Any kind of a major show production and dealing with network suits would just suck the life out of a person. I just mean to say that as an on-screen personality, Dave is top notch!

      Reallybigmonkey1 Stay away from those offers David. I've worked in the film industry before. It's not all what it's cracked up to be. Long hours, short pay and they just keep dangling that carrot out in front of you until you are broke and they are rich. Stick to what you know and you will be happy the rest of your life. Hollywood will screw your whole life up.

      Robert Seviour Thanks Robert. I'll keep doing what Im doing now and I'll just say if any show Im involved with allows me no control over the content, I wont do it. I wont have any part in any fake drama. It has to be for real outdoors fun. To me, thats plenty entertaining enough. Thanks for the support brother.

    Here's a trick that I have used for over 20 years. Place a large magnet (I used a speaker magnet from a dead speaker) on the side of your drill press and use it to hold your chuck key. It's always there, out of the saw dust and shavings. I really enjoy your videos.

    When I saw you were in the shop for this video I was disappointed. I really didn't want to see another really cool thingy that I can never have because of your machines. So when you showed this device made with hand tools, it was a breath of fresh air. I think I will make this one.

    Dude, you make the best videos. You are the only guy on UA-cam who can babble on camera and still be entertaining. An hour video from you puts most TV shows to shame IMHO. Although I live in California where fires are illegal everywhere I still watched the video for shear enjoyment. I made a few of your ideas so far. Mainly I made the collapsible grill from aluminum tubing and as welding rod. I'm also making a knife sheath that holds my 10" old hickory french style chief knife, the grill, a sharpening rod and ferro rod. The leather came from a Coach purse my wife no longer wanted. I wish the still had video response so you could see the ideas made from your videos. Keep em' coming. BTW, I really need a milling machine like yours. The only thing holding me back from a DIY project is not having the tool to do it. Otherwise I love making my own gear. Happy trails my friend, your efforts are appreciated.

    Great bid. What I would like to see for a winter shelter is your tree tent in use as it was explained on the video, hanging over the hot coals. Just to see how warm it really is. Of I ever get the time, I am going to make me one of them. Keep doing what you do, having fun.

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  9 років тому

      11krazykasper Thanks! I'm glad you like the vid. I did try the old tree tent over coals and it didnt work out too well. You cant really get it close enough to the fire to get warm and you can keep getting in and out to sustain a large fire. Its a great summer and cool weather shelter but for extreme cold, its just not ideal without more insulation. Try and make one tho if you have time. Take care and Thanks for watching my friend..

    Outstanding video David. I don't know how you do this, but I had to watch every single minute! Learned a lot and I love that you made a tutorial and took the effort to show how it's done with common man's tools! As a German it'll take me some time to translate the inches into centimeters, but I'll give it a go. The ferrobiner is simply great! Thanks a lot for this brother! Cheers, Marc

    Know what... that is a great design! I like the way you show how you do stuff. I can change it up a little by using a 3"x3" flat washer that they use to bolt down the bottom plate of walls in wood frame construction. There is already a drilled hole in the middle in the middle of the washer; just elongate the hole and add the other holes and I will be in business. Thanks for the vid!!!

    I find that i like your shop videos almost as much as out in the woods. Looking at your milling machine I thought of a spiral router bit in a router table. The bit is in a different direction. Also thought of a roto tool with one of those spiral bits they show cutting tile for the shower. Aluminium is pretty soft I think it would cut it. Also like the idea of the hole saw, even in a hand drill and they are not that expensive. Glad to see you are feeling better. Always look forward to your next video.

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  9 років тому +1

      Bruce Ferguson Im glad you like the shop vids Bruce, some only loves the woods videos. Yes, I do think a roto zip or spiral router will work. Just make sure the bit is 2 flute and not 4 flute, spiral flute and not straight flute and not carbide. More videos on the way brother.

    • @fergusrb
      @fergusrb 9 років тому

      Does a 4 flute grab more than a 2 flute? I was also thinking of a router in a table which I have on the wing of my table saw. They have up spiral and down spiral high speed steel bits. I would think a down spiral would pull the plate to the table the other would push it away. Also your ferobiner if you used carbon steel rod you could make a flint striker. Problem is I don't know if a flint striker has to have a sharp edge. Thanks again.

    Us "Old Timers" grew up with a cartoon series called "Ruff and Ready". They often had to deal with a planet called "Munimula" (which is aluminum spelled backwards). Folks just need to be more versatile in life! Even though I'm now in Colorado, my Woodbadge and Scout leader years were spent in Iowa. We had the 2nd meanest skeeters (the meanest being in Minnesota). I sure could have used this shelter back then. We used to just throw more green stuff on the fire (that we didn't need cause it was still 85 with 85% humidity at midnight). BTW. The mic really helps especially with the distance shots when you are moving around.

    Hey Dave! Great to see you again! Great idea on that keychain caribeaner. You are one of the most creative and innovative craftsman I have ever seen. You should sell some of your items one day. You could retire and spend more time in the woods making great videos. I'll tell you, the first thing I'd buy would be that coffee mug! Having my coffee with you in the woods every morning would inspire me to make stuff! Lol!

    Hi Dave. First off I will tell you that I watch your videos all the time. I like them cuz they are usually quite long and very easy to watch. I have to tell you that I am seriously in love with your brain. It is absolutely amazing. The things that you come up with are unbelievable. I hope you never stop inventing and creating things and teaching people how to do them. I also believe that things you make yourself are always better to have and to use if you make them yourself and not have to depend on the store to buy them. Once again amazing and very creative. Thanks for another great and wonderful video. God Bless

    You're a good teacher, Dave. Nice to see those machining tools at work and get an appreciation for how handy they are, although perhaps beyond the means of most do-it-yourselfers. If you had a website (you don't have one, do you?), you could post a .pdf file template of your gizmo to save us all the troub...I mean pleasure of doing the layout ourselves. Thanks, Bro.

      eqlzr2 Thanks brother. Lots of folks never see them type tools so its interesting for most. Im guessing the common tool method is fairly easy for most handy folks. Nope, I don't have a website or even a Facebook page. Im just a dude on youtube. LOL. The layout doesn't have to be accurate. You can eyeball it and get it close enough to work. Take care and Thanks for watching my friend.

    Meant to add a couple more thoughts. For the cut out saw folks could invest in a jeweler's saw and blades to give finer cuts an a rotary tool (like Dremel) with some cutters and a barrel sander to cut out the inside and clean things up.

    Man I just love watching you do your videos. When you were doing the drilling by hand the screen shot was so close. I swear I caught myself three times trying to blow the shavings. out of the way. I can also tell your equip. Has got ya spoiled. I really don't mean anything bad. If I had it I would never do it the hard way. I actually have everything to make this and will be starting it today. I got to make three. Me,my son and a friend of mine. I would love to hang out in your shop. I am always crafting something but totally by hand. Except I do had jig saw and a drill. But I usually make everything with the coping and hack saw. Any way thanks I will try and send some pics of them when I get them done.
