Who’d a thunk that searching UA-cam for how to dehydrate mashed potatoes would pull up a familiar face and voice, let alone the nurse who gave me all my childhood immunizations! :-)
I started doing this last year and I’m very happy with the result. I still have several jars and they have not discolored or lost their flavor. These are also great for thickening soups or stews.
The thought crossed my mind, searched it, and there you were, someone who had already tried it! Thanks for sharing your experience, steps and tips for success💖
If you want to avoid having to add potato water to get a smooth mash, use a potato ricer. When I want mashed potatoes I boil my potatoes with the skin on (more flavour) and push them through the ricer. The skins stay inside the ricer and is easily fished out. It saves time because you don’t have to peel them AND if you think of it, it saves on drying time because you don’t need to add extra liquid. I found ricing is faster than putting them through a mixer.
Wow! I love potatoes of any kind! I LOVE your shirt!! 😂🤣 My parents always had a huge garden and we canned a lot! Maybe someday our paths will cross again! ❤️
Excellent procedure, Barb!!! It's always great having a supply of dehydrated mashed potatoes at hand...I like adding it to soups...thanks for sharing!! 💖💖💖
TheOldFarmersWife: thank you very much for your tutorial. I’m wondering if I can do this with yams, sweet potatoes, turn up, personal, and carrot; it’s been a while since you did this video, so I’m wondering if you’ve experimented with other vegetables. And if you have, which ones were successful, and what’s your technique? I sure enjoyed this. :-) I almost forgot. By way of giving back: I like to make gravy, and then take the leftover gravy to hydrate and powder it for when I’m out in the woods and want to make a satisfying feed quickly. It works the same way as your technique for potatoes, and it works really well if you drain the excess fat off. (Otherwise, if it’s stored for very long it could go rancid because of the fat.). It even reconstitutes just about as quickly as the potatoes do. :)
I use all kinds of potatoes for this. It's also a great way to use up potatoes that are starting to go soft. They also make a great thickener for soups or stews instead of using flour or corn starch.
@TheOldFarmersWife I was literally sitting here eating instant mashed and potatoes and was curious how to make them at home. You have great camera presence and you seem like a really fun person to be around. Just from this one video I liked it and subscribed to your channel. My husband served in the Navy and hated their instant mashed potatoes so much that he will not eat them unless they are lumpy. After many years of cooking to please him, the lumps seem normal to me now. I tried once to make onion mashed potatoes and they tasted good to me, but the texture in the potatoes was strange. I used finely chopped onions but after watching this, I think I will try onion powder next time. Maybe it will work to give me onion potatoes. I love garlic potatoes too! I love a potato no matter how it is cooked. Have a wonderful day Barb, filled with blessings...
Thank you. This is what I had in mind, dehydrating just the mashed potatoes with nothing else added. I've dehydrated potato slices and small southern style hash brown cubes with good results so I'm going to try this. I will grind it in a finer powder by sifting it each time and regrinding the larger pieces until they are all gone. Another trick I've seen used with boiled sweet potatoes is to roll them out thin with a rolling pin between two pieces of wax paper to make them thin and uniform so they dehydrate better. That will work well if your dehydrator trays are square. I'll try it in my round trays by cutting a hole in the center with a cup and use a fruit tray as a guide to make them round and fit properly.
That’s why I pack all my canned goods. Shelf stable meat & produce 😉 Will you staying out west? What are your plans for the next shutdown? That’s why we’re staying close to home until things cool down

I got a brand new in the box American Harvest dehydrator at a garage sale this summer for $3.00. I could not believe the price and all the accessories that were included. I've been trying to dehydrate everything since. Always looking for options and I can't wait to try this. Thanks for the tips. Love your Ball t shirt also.

I think it was definitely a success. I think I am going to try this for my pantry. We don't eat a lot of potatoes, but, they would be good to have when we want them. They would also be good to have in our pantry for emergencies. You can add powdered milk to them and powdered butter and salt if you want, that way you only have to add boiling water. Thank you so much for your video.
First time growing potatoes last year. Tried red, Yukon and baking. Red didn't do well, but ended up with 300 pounds for root cellar. They are getting past their prime so I started canning and dehydrating slices.
