How to Paint Your Own Studio Photography Canvas Backdrop
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 чер 2024
- I'll teach you how I DIY'd my own canvas backgrounds painting with a broom! I walk you through how I painted my 5th background, and cover the tools and tips I have learned over the years to make a beautiful high quality canvas photo backdrop.
Materials I suggest using:
-Pre-primed rolled canvas like this one: (www.dickblick.com/products/bl...)
-Matte paint (House paint like Behr, or flat ceiling paint - just stay away from semi gloss/gloss paints!)
-a broom and a plastic paint mixing tray
-tarp, tape, or staples to secure the background to the floor while painting

The near fact that I think you are filming yourself while photographing yourself is incredible and all of it looking absolutely stunning. Well done. Portraits are amazing.
Oh wow. Thanks for saying that! It honestly was a bit of a challenge but I’m grateful I challenged myself in this way! ^_^
From all the videos that i watch for make backdrop this is the better for far.
Thank you so much!!!!
I made many using 8 oz drop cloths I bought from Home Depot. I used primer latex flat interior paint. Turned out great!
My god this is so gorgeous 😍So excited for this.
🥺🥺🤍🤍🤍🤍 thank you Kelly love!!!

This is so so so so good! What a talented lady
meep! Thank youuuuuuu Em!
Very helpful, thank you :)
Ahh thank you for the feedback! ^_^
Nice... I tried myself with the painters roller and sprayed at the end with the sprayer to make a mist.. actually this is the process you never be wrong and always can fix it.
Loving you artistic photos so much and you as a model slightly too beautiful 😊
thats a great process!!! I only found that when painting with a roller it is sooo important to have primed canvas or it will seep through and to also have no folds otherwise the paint will sort of cement them into place! - but so cool and thank you for your comment & kindness! :D
@@BrandiNicolePhoto yeah primed for sure 👌😊... thanks making those videos 💪
Be still my heart!
this is inspiring! Thank you! also where did you get those leaf earrings? Love love love!
So glad to hear you enjoyed it!! :D and I actually fastened leaves to my normal
Earrings with thread 😅 I got the leaves at my local flower market in the dried section! :)
Beautiful work. Do I paint my backdrop white first and then do the texturing with the broom? My backdrop is primed so there is already a white layer...so do I just go ahead and paint the texture with the broom on the white primer? Thank you.
Wow nice
Thank you so much! I hope it was helpful ☺️
AMAZING! thank you so much! Do you know if instead of canvas you would repaint your wall in the same way would it work the same? Thank you again
Ahh thank you!! :D and yes actually! I painted three walls in our home with a similar technique but used a sponge instead and it works great! :D
which paint is good for white canvas backdrops ?
This is really helpful thank you....
great...
Thank you!!
Hi, it looks amazing! Are you able to roll the backdrop after it's dry?
Thank you!! And yes!! It’s perfectly rollable :) especially when you use light watered down coats of paint the canvas doesn’t get stiff at all !
Very cool Brandi 🤩. How did I not know you had a UA-cam channel? I do now, 🤗
Ahh hi friend! Thank you for watching and supporting! I just started the channel a few months ago! 🕺🕺🕺
Excellent! So if I wanted to, I could use matt house paint regardless of colour?
You absolutely could!!! It does tend to dry a little more firm in my experience so keep the coats light or rolling it up is a little difficult. I would recommend trying to paint it if it’s stretched and stapled down first. :)
I just have to try one day... :)
yesssssss!!! do it!! It is so therapeutic and fun! and the sense of accomplishment after using it on shoots - just couldn't recommend it more.
@@BrandiNicolePhoto i will have some question for sure 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Have you ever tried using calico?
The material is a bit cheaper, and lighter too. I just purchased a 2nd hand frame that is quite light, so I'm not looking to use canvas, it might be too heavy once painted.
What's a good size for full portraits?
Love this idea and cant wait to do it and try to save money on drops! I am curious what colors you used on the backdrop behind you with your laptop? It looks like a cream, but you mentioned gray. Whatever color that is, its the exact look i'm am going for!
also, what are you using for reflectors/side walls?
The drop behind me (that isn’t the blue one!) is just made with white and like a 20% grey! I had three trays, white paint, light grey, and medium grey - then mottled them together with a broom and a giant sponge! I hope this helps and that you have fun! :D
and I think you’re referring to my v flats from v flat world! They are white on one side and black on the other ^_^
@@BrandiNicolePhoto thank you! And yes the vflats. The ones I got were from Home Depot and thick insulation that I painted and are enormous. I like these look like 2 half’s just stacked!
I love this song. Whats the name of it? thx
Hey Brandi,
This video was helpful...But
What size do we prefer for Full length portraits..?
Honestly it is just the largest canvas you can find locally I would recommend! every art store seems to have different sizes
Kudos to whoever finds the Emily Teague cameo easter egg first XD
The portrait behind you at 0:25?
😂😂😂
@@mcmullen_photo HAHAHA we have a winner!! :D
@@BrandiNicolePhoto yay! 😄
I'm wanting to do one for my aunt who is in charge of a free camp but I have to send it to he how would I ship this can it be lightly folded or dose it have to be rolled
Just went to Home Depot for supplies! Two questions, if I bought white primed canvas should I still molt with white in order to get the gray backdrop behind you? Also can you paint both sides of a canvas? Like do one side one color and the other side another?
You can paint both sides!! It shouldn’t bleed into the other side; but I would keep both sides relatively light colors/coats of paint so it’s not too heavy? Very curious how this turns out you gotta let me know! :D and also I definitely recommend mixing with white to get the slightly lighter tones mixed in with the grey
What size canvas do you order? The link you shared shows yards, so would 2 yards be large enough for at least 3/4 shots?
It would be quite a small working area but that should work in a pinch!! I’m guess you’re fabric is 1 x 2 yards and so it would be 3ft x 6ft and super skinny,
But if you lean a model next to it very close you should be able to make it work! They make rolled canvas that is a a little wider, I would try to go for that so you can have a larger working area :)
Beautiful! The link for the canvas is not working for me. Can you post the link again?
Hey there! Great catch! Here it is: www.dickblick.com/products/blick-acrylic-primed-cotton-canvas-rolls/
Hello can you uncreese it with a steamer ?
Hey Brandi, just wondering, does the paint cone off with use, I'd hate to have paint flecks through my home studio...
Nope! I’ve had mine for years now and no falloff - great question!! 🤗🤗🤍
@@BrandiNicolePhoto great to know, thank you 🙏
i want to make a background for mars scifi video
CIao! Hope you're well. Is the painting process repeatable? And if so, do you ever have to prime it again before adding a different color or after so many uses? Thanks ahead of time :-)
Great question! I have never had to repaint over mine for any reason but if you wanted to prime and paint your canvas again I am sure it would hold up well!! Are you thinking about repainting a drop of yours? :)
@@BrandiNicolePhoto Ciao and thanks for the reply :-) I'm getting into filming micro commercials, so I need multiple backdrop colors, depending on the product and customer requests. I've been buying paper backdrops, but that's becoming unwieldy to store. I'd rather just repaint something. Any suggestions? Again, thanks for your time. I know time is precious!
also stay away from exterior "Satin" paint... you need interior "Flat" if buying from Lowes/Home Depot
Yes! Exactly, anything with a shine or gloss is gonna have some crazy elements in the background ✨✨
very nice! what colors does the backdrop next to you have?
The white one?? It is just white and very very light grey! :D
How do you attach the backdrop to the roll?
I use a whole background system made by Kupo! Kupo poles and a backdrop chain drive :D
What are the dimensions?
Is it easy to roll? Mine has cracked the paints
Yeah!! I use super light coats of paint also mixed with water so it still Rolls nicely. You might be using too heavy of paint if it is cracking!! Or too thin of canvas!
@@BrandiNicolePhoto thank you
Do you find that your canvas is stiff or is it easy to roll and fold?
The first time I made one I used drop cloth from home depot. Primed it twice and then went in with matte wall paint and its sooooooo freaking stiff
Oh wow!!! Mine is definitely easy to roll! I tend to paint with a water and paint mixture to keep it light and sponge -painty! Maybe you’re using too many heavy layers of paint? I’m unsure!! But also drop canvas has a much thicker texture !
@@BrandiNicolePhoto I'm definitely going to try your way!!
@@peekabookatt let me know how it goes!!!! :D
