These government leaders only putting the country into more debt. They can't find ways to make any thing work in Trinidad but letting people come and manage the same resources we have. From since I am small all they only could raise gas and oil, when they do this food goes up. Then they raise salary. A vicious cycle..
Great vid. China is very opportunistic in that when they see smaller states struggling and seek them out to offer them these huge loans at good rates in the hope that the countries cannot repay in order for them to seize and take control of parts of the countries infrastructure and it is very worrying .
It's not good rates . The Chinese are calculating and shewed. They have already calculated that the rates (although better than most) would be impossible to honor . Therefore, they have already have a contract signed and ready to cease assets.
@@lorainecodrington5721 And after repossessing those assets what do they do with them? I mean they can't really take back infrastructure into their homeland. The most they could do is exclude citizen which i seems completely absurd because then the assets just sits there and isn't generating any returns on capital.

China has been investing and trading in the Caribbean for hundreds of years. This is nothing new. The issue is that the U.S.A dose not like it. Chinese people have lived in and been apart of the Caribbean longer than many other nationalities that make up the Caribbean community.
Yeaaahhhhh- no nope not really- I'm from Trinidad I can say definitely not- we all dumber than a rock- it's like America but- guns aren't legal if you don't have a licents------ (Edit) epic cringe from 2 years back coming to the surface again
Cheap labor. The French company tried to get the project but the unc said no just like they said no to the tunnel to Maracas beach which would have been safer
China is creating a new global shipping "Silk Road" they don't want to own the country. They are planning to create a new shipping lane through Nicaragua similar to the Panama Canal. Not sure at what stage the project is but they are quietly acquired strategic areas across the globe.
I recently came upon yr work. Great!! Proud of u. for bringin to light these serious issues. Hope a lot more younger ones will open their minds and follow. Bless!
Question? If they are constructing these projects where does the labor and materials needed originate from ? Thumbs up. Glad to see someone highlighting this issue.
James that was a very informative doc. I have been fearful of this for many years as one can see how China is being the “Saviour“ to many struggling countries. It is sad the all the governments we have had did not try to expand on our resources.
In the world as it is, it's very difficult for countries (small ones esp., but even large ones such as Canada) to be independent. Trinidad was a colony of Spain, then of Britain, since approx. mid-20th century a neo-colony of the US. IMO, esp. as we humans are facing what looks like being climate chaos, we need to work hard to achieve local food sovereignty.
I've been having discussions about this with a few of my friends recently. Glad i found your channel, new subbie and sharing this as far and wide as it will go.
Its pretty much empty tho. I used to work next door in building next door. Younwould only see about 3 or four people if so much walking around. But the gates in front are designed to withstand a battering ram as they are heavily reinforced... wonder why. Oh lots of cats there too lol
There is also a similar strategy used with respect to harvesting and nurturing information and academic knowledge. There is the thousand talents program where they offer researchers funding for their projects where they otherwise won’t qualify of be allowed in other parts of the world.
John Perkins who is the author of Confessions of an Economic hitman was warning us since before the Chinese came into the Caribbean he was warning us about the IMF Corprotocricy that poisoned smaller states with austerity measures and high interest rates for loans countries had to pay back for many years. Haiti for example has been paying back colonizers debt to France for hundreds of years. So let God now have his way with China. We welcome them for development sake.
Let me just say this to everybody, just like after WW2 massive financial Aid in the form of [the Marshall Plan] was given to Countries like Japan, S Korea, Taiwan, Germany, England Italy etc. in favorable concessionary terms, now they are staunch Ally of the US and that's what they are afraid of, they are not really concern for the welfare of the Countries, for they are mostly black Countries, which have been badly left out of the World financial system [as seen with the WW2 beneficiaries] my advise is that Countries that's getting these beneficial loans from China must be careful not to take an amount they cannot re-pay, as a Jamaican, I'm happy to see what is happening to Trinidad, I know good leadership will not allow for any calamity.
The question becomes how to untangle the tentacles and take back what is ours? China will not give up the power and control they have. At what point do the people of T&T say we want our country and destiny back? Economic ties are important but should never be at the expense of losing the country because we are unable to repay our debt to a single lender. One more reason that the IMF & IDB must revamp their practices and terms. James - really look forward to the future installments!
Hi James, interesting choice of research topic. Looking forward to the others following this. I remember observing the 'Silk Road' project and in contrast looking at China's investments in T&T. Its left to be seen what becomes of it. Your video and perspective reminds me of Johnny Harris from Vox who did an incredible job on a series called Borders. Sounds like predatory lending on a macroeconomic level.
It’s a dangerous deal. If we can’t pay back the money then like Sri Lanka we loose parts of our country.
