It's important to say that while negatives are a good starting point for some people who can't do a pull-up, they are too advanced for others. For instance my girlfriend - she had a very weak upper body when we started training together, and when she tried doing negatives she just came flying down uncontrollably. Besides not helping her in any way, it was actually dangerous since she could tear a tendon or ligament. Instead, she started with a combination of Australian pull-ups and leg-supported pull-ups. She just advanced to doing controlled negatives after 3 months of training, and hopefully to a pull-up in a couple months more!
yes, there are other ways to train your pull ups of course. If I was training with her I would have her do feet assisted negative pull ups as well as various upper body strengthening exercises like you mentioned. A pull day, or upper body strengthening day will always include more then one exercise in order to create a well rounded body :D I would also incorporate active hangs at the beginning (can be feet assisted if needed), limited ROM pull ups, and scapular pulls - lots you can do :D
@@joelcoll4034You have the most assistance and tension from the band at the bottom, so most people don't build the strength to actually start doing pullups.
@@joelcoll4034 I'm not speaking on behalf of @Summerfunfitness of course, but I know some folks don't like to use them as a training tool because there's concerns about the band creating a weird body trajectory during the pull-up, or that the person won't learn how to use body tension correctly, both of which could affect pull-up skills and bar-based skills later. But just like all training tools and methods, diff things work for diff folks!
@@joelcoll4034they make the rep the easiest at the bottom, which is where the muscle is the most stretched. Apparently research has shown that the most stretched position of a movement is really important for strength and especially muscle growth. Bands always make that position the easiest, which is always sort of a point against them.
02:37 - negatives - do negative pull-ups; 04:17 - "grease the groove" training principle - install the pull-up bar at home and do the negative part of the full motion whenever you pass it; 05:45 - add pauses - pause halfway up, on top, and halfway back for a couple of seconds.
I love how your body looks!!! So strong and defined. I hope one day to achieve that. Although I am probably 20 years older than you, I hope there is a chance for me. You have inspired me and my kids to do calisthenics. Thank you very much!!!
I remember I saw a woman attempt to do pull ups without the support bar and she struggled to do 2. But I have so much respect for her for trying. So this is insanely impressive!
If she can do 2 then she did unlock this skill just a matter of time. 2 is very good number when starting to train pulls up. Many bodybuilders can do anyone.
I’m impressed. I am more motivated now to work on my pull-ups. I joined CrossFit so we do work on them, but doing them daily and doing negatives sounds a great idea!

About you I would say that you are doing a very good job with your trainning and is fine that you are sharing it because that will inspire other people to do better than their own previous selves, that includes me.
Thanks for this video! It inspired me last year. I was 46 years old. I was in physical therapy for a knee injury, cartilage damage, so I got a pullup bar with elastics for my knee exercises, and I figured I might as well try pull-ups. Started at 0. Tried them once in the morning, and once at night without fail. After one week, I could do 1. And then I increased by an average of one pullup every week, until I reached 9, and that seemed to be my natural limit. Have not been able to do more than 9. After a while, I stopped doing them every day. But the pull-ups were the fun part of my physical therapy, so they helped me with motivation to go to the bar and keep up with the knee exercises. Thanks!
This is an amazing accomplishment. We are the same age. I was doing pull-ups in grade school but I played sports with the men and was far better than most of them (according to them!). I’m still underestimated all the time. My next goal is to return to pull-ups (can still do it, but it’s haaard lol) and add handstands. My lower half is elite (I’m a dancer/entertainer) my core is solid and improving, but zero strength up top these days.

Massive respect to you, and incredible feat. I can't do what you do, but I do basic calisthenics and know the time and dedication it takes, to get where you are hence my utmost respect to you. Keep it up.
This is such a great video that needs more likes. I started my pull-up journey about 3 weeks ago and am already doing the negatives. She is right about not letting your weight be a reason to not do pull-ups. Thank you for sharing your tips!
1:45 How can you be a personal trainer, especially a female one, and think no woman could do a pull up ?? Like yeah sure it's not a common thing for a girl to be able to do that but still pull ups are a pretty basic exercise.
@Carlo Mig that's bullshit. you're literally on a video of how a girl learned to do pullups. even buzzfeed women can do pullups. go take your bad women's anatomy elsewhere. Women are 5" shorter than men on average but there is still plenty of variance within the distributions of height. As far as I'm concerned, many women are actually just fat and untrained.
@Carlo Mig 1 pull up is not that hard when you are kind of light weight and have some amount of upper body strength. I am a woman who is 163cm tall with a weight of 57kg and I can nearly do a pull up and 1 full chin up. And I'm not really active right now, but I've done a lot of martial arts in the past and gained a good amount of upper body strength. It's not really impossible for women. But many girls/ women don't do upper body training or just core training, so there is a high percentage who aren't able to do pull ups. Most of the time it's the lack of training.
Thank you for sharing your story and showing the world that a girl can do pull ups or anything else she sets her mind to do! Today is day 1 of my challenge/journey of being able to do one good pull up. Not sure how long it will take but I am aiming for 60 days, hopefully I'll be able to do it by end of July.
Why did that lady think that girls can’t do pull ups? If anything calisthenics is more accessible to everyone because you are lifting your own body weight. So the person could be 4 foot 6 and weigh very little and they should still be able to do pull ups. Our bodies are made to be able to pull ourselves up.
You would be surprised, most guy and girls can do pullups from like 3-14, but after that a combination of weight gain and society aesthetic makes its so that women want a certain shape... Thus a lot of them they stop training arm and backs in any kind of way and lose the ability to do 1 pull up, even if they weight less, and I'm not even talking about the women who weight more than me... & I'm 200 lbs of muscle.
It is harder for most women to do pull ups. We just have to work harder. Most have to train for a while to get their first, while my husband can take an entire year off working out at all and still do 10+ and a muscle up.
If your weigh less this means not automatically you can do pull ups. Woman have more musclemass/weight in their lower body and less in their upper body. This means woman have to work harder then men, to be able to do pull ups. They also have to deal with a higher b.f.p. then men. With a low b.f.p. and proper upperbody training programm it is possible for woman to do pull ups
My ex wife could turn out 15 -20 pull ups whenever she felt like it. The last time I remember seeing her do it, she was thirty one years old. But, she has been an athlete her whole life. Last time I saw her, a month ago, she told me she was running half marathons every other weekend (64 years old now).
the first scene is unbelievable! Well a few minutes later i must admit that your whole video is full of amazing performances i have never seen by a women. You are high above the average top fitness girls!
the gym I am at, there are a good amount of females that can do them in multiples. It really is impressive seeing anyone do 15+ pull-ups at a time. 1 of the girls hit 23 pull-ups about a month ago. It is truly the biggest indicator of full body strength. I can get 17 dead hang pull-ups so far while at 200 lbs. Good job on getting there!!
I'm going to call B.S. on the 23 pull-ups! I am a strength and conditioning coach and have taught and TESTED STRICT pull-ups for years. Strict PULL-UPS: Body must stay straight(feet cannot go forward, knees cannot kick up at all), Hands must be CLEARLY wider than shoulder width(2-4 in.); you have to pull your chin to bar level, and go down to 3/4 extension. I don't care how fit the girl is, I need to see it to believe it. Lots of people can Swing their body, but in my books those are NOT real pull-ups. 8-12 properly for a girl would be extremely impressive. 15 would be out of this world!

I have been stuck on 5 pull ups in one go since 2016. 😂 So it's so motivating to see that you went from 0 to the most pull ups I have ever seen. Big ups
You're an inspiration, Summer. I, too am a vegan and have been for a long time. I play lots of tennis so habitually hang upside down in the mornings and lift weights before tennis to stretch my spine. I used to do lots of bridge pushups and plan to build that habit again.
I KNEW you were a fellow pole dancer. 😂 I haven’t even trained to do pull ups and I just tried today for the first time in almost a year and I could do 8 (I probably could have pushed myself to do a few more). Last summer I was only able to do 3 or 4 with a struggle and I’ve been mostly doing pole with a gym session at least once a week. It gives you so much upper body strength alone lol.
I just found out there are removable pull-up bars that you can install in a door frame and remove when you want and I'm super excited to get one, this video was informative and got me even more inspired to start training pull-ups, thank you!
This is amazing advice. It's very similar to what I did to go from 0 to 10 pulls in year. Negatives as so useful and doing them after you fail a set of pull up as a drop set is a great tool too. Weighted pull ups are also great for further progression once you are already getting 10 plus pull ups.
You are so good with your advice and your own performance is so motivating. You should have heaps more subscribers. You are an undiscovered gem Summer!
I just follow the "most replayed" curves in the timeline. To save time. EDIT: Joking aside I'm very impressed by her skills and work ethic. Well done!!
Very good video on how to progress in this. I am 58 and as a man, when I was younger, pullups were never an issue. However, now that I am older and heavier, Pullups are not something I can do. I just started doing negative rep pullups knowing that negatives just made sense to develop your strength to get a positive rep in. It is going exactly as she describes in this video. I can only do a couple negatives right now and they are not very slow. I am glad to see this talked about in this video. Thumbs up for you. You have inspired me to keep going in this as it is very frustrating sometimes when your ego interferes when it was something you used to be able to do and now cant.
She provides some good information, but there are more-detailed videos on how to build your strength to be able to do pull-ups. One included working on your ab strength. Strong abs are important in the pull-up motion, a fact that surprised me.
That surprises me too, although it shouldn't as the body uses a bunch of muscles in different areas to accomplish tasks. I have been working on core too, although not as hard as everything else. I have always hated core work. Even when I was younger and in shape. I had a 4 pack, but never a six pack back then. I just don't like working core and with some fat on my gut, it's even harder to get into
I love pullups. When I was younger I did lots of pull ups and push-ups I was a boxer and this was part of our workout. I've always loved pull-ups and when I stick to them and I maintain my discipline my body always looks better and feels better. Now I am 56 I just recently started back doing pull-ups right now I can do about eight good pull-ups but I'm going to work my way back up. My shoulders back and neck always feel better when I'm doing pull-ups and I'm doing a traditional calisthenic workout where I'm super setting push-ups and pull ups over 10 sets of short sets. You are very impressive with all the things that you can do. Keep it up 👍 take care
This is brilliant. I'm male and when I got my pullup bar I discovered I could do 4 in a row - and then more throughout the day, and then my arms were useless for a week :-P I hope to be able to work up to things like what you are doing some day.
I'm 57 now, some shoulder pains etc and I'm trying to get to at least 10 good pull ups. I know I can do it because in my youth I did 27 clean pull ups in a competition and 10 muscle ups. Thank you for the motivation.
I got chronic Golfer’s Elbow from pull ups. I took me six months to recover. Now I only do chin ups and I use rings rather than a bar. Train hard, but first, do no harm.
Ah, your story is an inspiration. Glad you defied the lies your aunt believed. Installing a pull-up bar in my apartment and getting to work in February!
I want to learn to do a pullup this spring or summer and I've been using the pullup machine. I do some higher rep sets and some lower rep sets. It works pretty well and I recommend it. If I don't have that, I just prop my legs up on something and do pull ups that way. I might drop a leg for more weight. I think pullups with a resistance band are okay, but it is harder to get the full range of motion. They might be good for pullup holds. I feel stronger and I think I'm progressing, but I just started 2 weeks ago. Your video has a bunch of great ideas for what I could do past pullups (general calisthenics). Over the summer, I like to use the tree in my front yard and I do slow descents.
True, negatives are the way top go. Started with zero, and got nowhere with assisted pull-ups. Then i tried negatives. Once i could do 3x8 negatives, i was able to start with normal pullups. I can now do 3x6 pretty ones. Goal is 3x10 but its tough going.

This would lemme know what is the right number if I can't completely stop!! So please, as a mentor, please do tell or make a video on this??!!
Negatives are sort of the secret to bodyweight training along with other clever progressions. Like a lot of things if you break it down into steps or stages it makes it possible to do things that at first seem impossible. Once you figure out, learn or discover the steps it seems obvious to you but it's not at all obvious at the start. Also nice origin story.
My favorite method of training is applying skill to real life situations like for pull ups, I go to playground and climb latter without feet in safe areas of course pulling a little at a time leading to final result with practice.
Well done for all the hard work and dedication. Interestingly enough, you also proved one the theories of Mike Mentzer, who said: The most effective part of the movement is the peak of the contraction of the exercise (the one where you do the pauses), the second most efficient is the negative part (he recommends up to 4 second for it) and the least effective is the lifting part. Therefore "lifting weights" is actually useless.
Impressive! Not just the strength and flexibility. It's about the way your brain is wired and how you reached and exceeded your goals! That's even more impressive to me!
Glad you liked it. If you watch some of my beginner videos you will see all of these tips in action. Here's a clip of a negative banded pull-up as requested ua-cam.com/video/kX149bgRXYI/v-deo.html
I started with a band, moved to negatives, and now i do pull-ups. I do agree the band is a crutch but it helps teach form for people who don’t know it. God video though, 2 months is realistic for a basic/ almost pullup. The fact that it takes so long to do in my mind means calisthenics really are king of fitness Edit: I grease the groove! I’m so happy to hear someone else does that. What I don’t understand is how lean you are! I’m so frustrated that doesn’t feel achievable for me
We have so many self imposed limitations on our physical capabilities. Pity that people around us often impose some more. I think grease the groove is a great suggestion for pull ups, because there is a big body awareness component.
What I love about this more even than your success at doing this is your attitude. “Women cant do pull-ups!” “Oh yea? Nobody tells me what I can and cant do”. And THAT’s the attitude we all need in life. Don’t ever let anybody tell you that you cant do something. What I am saying here is actually subtle - you may well find out that you can actually not do it, I am not saying everybody can do everything if they only put their mind to it. But that’s not the point. The point is to set yourself ambitious goals, and then go after them. It must not matter what other people think of your goal - don’t live by other people’s standards. On a light-hearted note, I need somebody to say to me that I can never learn calisthenics - I need the motivation… 😂😂

You are amazing! Thank you for your inspiration and motivation.
You are so good with your advice and your own performance is so motivating. You should have heaps more subscribers. You are an undiscovered gem Summer!
Mind blowing inspiration on display here.
The strength nonchalance on display is ridiculous 😂 Awesone 💪
She never ceases to amaze me! I've said it before, will say it again... Respect!!!
Tremendous upper body strength. And she is beautiful as well!❤
I just follow the "most replayed" curves in the timeline.
Negatives are great advice for sure. It's help me to gain strength on many strength lifts for sure. Thanks for sharing!
This is brilliant. I'm male and when I got my pullup bar I discovered I could do 4 in a row - and then more throughout the day, and then my arms were useless for a week :-P I hope to be able to work up to things like what you are doing some day.
Wow. This is so inspiring girl. Gonna start learning myself!! Please keep making videos!
🤩 What grace, what strength, what beauty of gesture executed to perfection!
Always enjoy watching your videos.
I also admire how you taught yourself Calisthenics. That's the spirit!
Yay this was all the motivation i needed. Your body is AWESOME 😍
I'm 57 now, some shoulder pains etc and I'm trying to get to at least 10 good pull ups. I know I can do it because in my youth I did 27 clean pull ups in a competition and 10 muscle ups. Thank you for the motivation.
Monster, that's so nice to see a girl doing that. Mind opener.
I got chronic Golfer’s Elbow from pull ups. I took me six months to recover. Now I only do chin ups and I use rings rather than a bar. Train hard, but first, do no harm.
One of the best pull up tip videos I've seen! So much solid advice! Excellent!👍👍
Glad it was helpful!
I dont know why you have 597 subs you deserve more maybe 1 milloin sub. Like you are a beast. Just keep it up one im sure you would be succssfull😉👍💯
Here we are 3 years later and she has half a million!
Wow!! Thank you, you are amazing and inspiring!

thats an insane amount of pulling strength you got, todays my pull day, will try negatives and pauses n see how it goes
Short and to the point, great video, love the balance between your lower body and upper body size.
Do you masturbate? Don't get offended, I'm asking this because I wanna know whether our eggs are important part of strength or not. And, if you do, how much? This would lemme know what is the right number if I can't completely stop!! So please, as a mentor, please do tell or make a video on this??!!
I used to go to a CrossFit gym and I’ve seen plenty of women do pull-ups but this lady is next level.
That is one hell of a strong lady, and she is absolutely right.
You are my idol. I train to do one pull up. What I see from your progress is totally amazing. keep doing this
You can do it!
That was just the motivation I needed ! Thank you so much
Damn girl u strong as hell good shit and nice video!
Also nice origin story.
great video and even better story! I'm stoked to get better at my pull ups now!
That one hand hang on the boat is astonishing!
The beginning of this video was crazy. The whole video was amazing
Yes Summer! Nailed it👌🏾 fantastic!
A joy to watch you move. You inspire me!
you got a real strength in you 👏👏
My favorite method of training is applying skill to real life situations like for pull ups, I go to playground and climb latter without feet in safe areas of course pulling a little at a time leading to final result with practice.
Now that is what I would call an inspirational video. Congrats!
We never found out how her aunt reacted after she became a beast
I'm certainly impressed. GO GIRL!
I want to be a strong female too!!! Thanks you so much for proving to me that i can do it
Yeah you can do pull ups like her too, after few years.
Wow.... i digs your commitment and decication to it. just amazing.....
Awesome! Keep up your dedication and videos.
This is exactly my story too, I learnt to do pull-ups ups in a month using negatives
Your Amazing, thank you for the video, as a man you inspire me!! Keep it up and never stop.
This helped a bunch! I’ll skip the band and stay focused on negatives and give myself at least 3 months of consistency and see what magic can happen!
Such good info with such great b roll. Keep at it.
Impressive! Not just the strength and flexibility. It's about the way your brain is wired and how you reached and exceeded your goals! That's even more impressive to me!
Thank you for your encouragement. Basically, my takeaway is it takes time and practice, but it will come.
Very encouraging and inspirational
Love this! Currently trying to make my first pull up. Thank you for the video
I learned something new. The pauses, thanks!
Thank you :D
Thank you! Such an inspiration! I'd like to also see some of the movements you talk about in the clip, for instance the negative-tip.
Glad you liked it. If you watch some of my beginner videos you will see all of these tips in action. Here's a clip of a negative banded pull-up as requested ua-cam.com/video/kX149bgRXYI/v-deo.html
@@Summerfunfitness Thank you!!!!
I started with a band, moved to negatives, and now i do pull-ups. I do agree the band is a crutch but it helps teach form for people who don’t know it. God video though, 2 months is realistic for a basic/ almost pullup. The fact that it takes so long to do in my mind means calisthenics really are king of fitness
Edit: I grease the groove! I’m so happy to hear someone else does that.
What I don’t understand is how lean you are! I’m so frustrated that doesn’t feel achievable for me
Thank you for sharing your story! ❤
Straight up amazing! I'll let you know when I catch up to you from Halifax.
This is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing this dope perspective. ❤️
Thanks for the tips. That's an inspiring story.
I'm so inspired!
Daaamn you go hard
Phenomenal and thank you for the advice! Great job
I'm a guy but this video inspired me to try to do the steps and other stuff during pullups or when hanging from a bar. It looks really cool.
We have so many self imposed limitations on our physical capabilities. Pity that people around us often impose some more. I think grease the groove is a great suggestion for pull ups, because there is a big body awareness component.
This is a awesome video! Great work!
omg I love your voice and I love this video !!!
Just found your channel a day ago! Your strength is goals!
