In this installment of "putting big things into perspective with a lot of talking: the show", we take a look at nuclear mushroom clouds, those friendly faces that your own friendly face will be too busy burning away to see. I've always been fascinated by just how giant clouds can be, and none are bigger than these. So, let's take a trip through the history of nuclear bombs and their atmospheric tests to find out just how big they come.

After sitting on this for a couple months now I've come to the realization that my explanation as to the formation of condensation rings was absolutely abysmal. It's actually a near complete reversal as to how I explained it. If you know anything about the formation of mach cones around aircraft approaching the sound barrier, it's much the same. While the shock front itself is an area of high pressure, its movement of air creates an equally intense region of low pressure behind it. As I demonstrated earlier in the video, reducing the pressure results in a drop in temperature, and when you lower the temperature of moist air, you're primed for the formation of cloud droplets. As the low pressure region passes, temperatures rise, and the cloud dissipates. This is why rings (and wilson clouds) form.
A running list of other screw-ups:
1. Cumulonimbus clouds do not have the subset castellanus. I had meant to say cumulonimbus calvus, or cumulonimbus clouds that haven't formed an anvil.
2. The outer casing of the TX-16 was not aluminum, it was steel.
3. For whatever reason, I mispronounced "noctilucent" as "nocticulent".
4. The bombing of Hiroshima occured on August 6th, three days before the 9th, not two.
If you find any others, please let me know so I can correct them.

What was the aluminum tube spitting fire you talked about at the end coz I don't remember hearing anything about it before. Have heard of the Trinity tests, Hiroshima and even the Tsar bomba, but no idea what that last bit referred to and you ended the video after mentioning it without explanation.

I wish you talked more about Starfish Prime cause it's interesting: that debris cloud was so high that it wasn't really a mushroom cloud anymore but an _aurora_ - the shape was dictated by Earth's magnetic field. The explosion created an artificial radiation belt around Earth that remained for months and damaged several satellites.
Also, nukes need... Dont know the proper term in english "stützmasse" (literally "column/base mass"). Without air and matter, there is just radiation plus the little blast that is mediated by the bombs own mass.

At 39:00, the flash reveal of text in time with the music is pure art. Whether it was intended to be punchy or to give the audience a taste of what it would've been like to watch the test occur, that is a positively gorgeous use of the medium. You get all of the gold stars.

The formation of Starfish Prime's fireball (among other Fishbowl detonations') could use a little explanation. It formed into those lines because the blast was so high up that the paths of the blast's highly-charged particles were deformed by Earth's magnetic field. This changes the understanding of how EMPs resulting from near-space detonations work when you take that into account.
On a completely different note, any chance you could do a Scale of Volcanoes video? I really liked both this and the one on tornadoes.

As impressive as mushroom clouds are, the graphic at 17:34 more put into perspective just how huge cumulonimbus clouds are.

What's really wild to think about regarding the Tzar Bomba test is how far away one could be, while still being able to see it. It was still visible over 600 miles away, and it's heat could be felt at 160 miles distance from ground zero.
To put it in perspective, I live about 180 miles away from Manhattan, and New York City. If a 50 megaton device was used against one of those locations, not only would both be deleted from the list of things that physically exist, I would be able to step outside and see the explosion with near perfect clarity, and I'd feel the heat of nearly ten million people being purged from reality.
We know the shockwave from the blast encompassed the earth three times, with the first wave making it's way around the earth in just over 36 hours, with the circumference of the earth being around 25,000 miles, we can conclude the shockwave was initially traveling at an average speed of about 700 miles per hour for the first circumventing wave. With a distance of about 180 miles from myself and the theoretical ground zero, it would take around 15 and a half minutes for this deity flattening gust of wind to reach me and give my house a new pressure wash at just a hair shy of the speed of sound.
I read that even at 100km 3rd degree burns would happen, which is probably death id assume. I grew up in Laguna Beach about 65 miles/1hr drive south of downtown LA. Crazy to think if 50MT hit LA people on the beach in Laguna/Orange County would be fried 😯
And even that is dwarfed by asteroid strikes. The KPG ( KT) impact had a yield of 100 teratons

God we cannot stop watching that ending with Starfish Prime, that is such a marvelous piece of just, musical connection with an outstanding reveal of what's bigger than the Tsar Bomba. The mushroom cloud from it reminds me of a Enoki mushroom too, which is befitting of the video too. God, we love it.
I feel like a video on volcanic eruptions would be the perfect finish to this trilogy.

This video is a total masterclass in story-telling by editing and script. The fact that it was so easy to follow, I think, is really a byproduct of how meticulously well-made everything besides the information you tried to convey is actually crafted -- for lack of a better word.
These deserve so much more attention.

This is seriously one of the best videos I've ever seen on UA-cam and I've been watching since 2006. If you did something like this semi-ish-regularly this would be a multi-million subscriber channel in short order. Its like Martin Scorsese did documentaries on UA-cam. Your pacing, your music, your narration, writing and graphics - its that good. Bravo, this is an absolute masterpiece and high point on this entire platform and I really mean that.
In terms of small youtuber essays, this is easily the best one I have ever seen. Just the attention to detail and music choices make this video something one would see in a museum!

Dude i absolutely love this video, especially the end. Ive always known atomic bombs are big, that the tsar is the biggest, but ive never had the build up in size shown to me like this before and both of the times ive watched this completely through so far has made my jaw drop. WOW. Ive had a plethora of knowledge on nuclear tests over the years but this was like a breath of fresh air. Never have I heard an explanation of the skirts or the sizes of the clouds. Not only that but it was put together in a beautiful package that kept me sat here throughout the whole video. Wonderful video that deserves to be preserved just as much as the nuclear tests themselves.
honestly I don't comment that much on many videos. but I have to make an exception here: the last few minutes of the video was something else. Absolutely great choice for the music at the end and syncing it to what is going on to make it that much more impactful. Just gives me chills. first time I keep going back to a video just to replay the last few minutes. My first reaction upon first watching this was like "No, he's got to be fucking crazy. there's no way there's something bigger than the Tsar Bomba... Right?" and then I got blown away (pun might or might not be intended). Hell, even before the last part, I was equally stunned by the introduction of Joe-111 (Tsar Bomba). that part much like what was before it was done so well. Immediate new subscriber earned for sure without any hesitation

39:36 What I find even more terrifying and awe inspiring about Starfish Prime is that those colossal thermospheric streaks, a hand of god reaching up to 1000 km into the heavens were caused by a nuke 50 times smaller than the Tsar Bomba. Imagine how truly enormous the clouds created by Starfish Prime could’ve been if an Ivy King was on that rocket. Operation Fishbowl truly is a testament to humanity’s destructive potential and the lengths we are willing to go for knowledge. This is hands down the best video essay I’ve watched.

At first I was so happy to get a good explanation, about the "anatomy" of a nuclear mushroom cloud, I was wishing for so long.
But stuff got really crazy fast. This is basically a full blown documentary, that set things into perspective, even for me, who is a sucker for these kind of videos for years.

Hi! At the start of the video I didn't exactly enjoy your delivery and the tedious way it was being explained but throughout the video it feels like the script evolved and the writing became more and more to the point.

As someone who knows a bit about fishbowl I had no idea it was that big expansion wise.
Honestly, I remember literally sitting in absolute awe for a good ten minutes when I was making the photogramtric measurements for this video.
Judging by the height of the fireball's epicenter relative to the perspective of the C-135 that took the photos, it's likely starfish prime's plumes stretched to an altitude anywhere between 700 and 1000km, which seems utterly outlandish until you remember the "great white fingers" were visible for 1000s of miles all across the Pacific. Viewers on Kwajelein reportedly had to look upward 45 degrees to see the explosion, and they were 1600 miles from Johnston atoll.
I suppose that's just what you get when atomized debris traveling at dozens of times the speed of sound has practically no atmosphere to impede it.

the loss of words I have... I don't know if it was the perfect soundtrack, the stunning graphics, the immaculate editing, or the sheer horror that man has and will continue to build such tangible and disgusting raw existence-shattering weapons. The reality of such a... I dare not even call this a weapon anymore.
Since childhood, the field has been fascinating to me, but the scale of it all and its repercussions have always been a pressure-raising thing to think about; waves of nausea, blurring vision, tears, and an almost catatonic period that follows after a small anxiety attack. And feeling like I'm about to have an aneurysm or stroke. Grief so strong that it forces me to forget and only remember the curiosity I felt and "explosions cool"; a cycle turning once more so I can rediscover the shame and looming threat it has brought us all.
My body aches at what I witnessed once more. I am feeling numb. I have forgotten the simple sentence I wanted to leave. I wish so much better for us all.

like. really good. same with the tornado one. phenomenal work, all of it. two of the best pieces of media I've ever consumed from every standpoint: research, scoring, visuals and visual aids, script, narration, pacing, tone clarity, and intent. probably even more but I wasn't a film major. and the humor to coax the viewer through it all. This was an excellent fascinating and highly informative documentary, it answered several questions never explained in any other nuclear test docs . I loved it !
