Standard: metrum is the master - the drummer is servant. But here we have truly a revolution: metrum is servant and drummer is master. Guiliana is a hero no matter you like it or not.
I used to think this guy slows down (because he's not good enough to hear himself slow down) when he has faster bass drum rhythms....then as I listened to more jazz music I realized he's just being jazz drummer/solid musician and plays for gretchen parlato....he's doing it on freaking purpose, which simply means he's a genius. Love this guy
the "opening up" of the groove around 9:00 is delicious before it goes back to "triple time"...whatever other people say...this is absolute masterful playing...taylor is one of the great young cats..this band with kendrick scott on drums blew my mind at Monterey Jazz 2010
The perma-smile on Taylor's face during his whole solo is arguably my favorite part of this video, dude had the serious Cedar Walton bounce on a bunch of those licks and he knew it
When someone steps outside your aesthetic criteria you have a choice. It's strange that many seem to go hostile, instead of staying open and checking it out like a musician or anyone on the path.
Lots of people bashing the solo on here. Look closely though, it's motivic development. Listen to the beat/motif he plays at the beginning. He then builds upon it using orchestration/dynamics/subdivision/etc. Don't overthink it. (look at similarities at beginning and then at like 3:15)
I've been binge listening to this for the past few days. I can't get over how beautiful Taylor's solo is on this. Honestly I think this is the best I've heard him playing on this song.
Thank you Mark as always!!! Gene Kruppa wrote the entertainer and as a musician and a drummer you have managed to succeed in bringing all of this together!!!!
I don't know what it is that you've done to me But it's caused me to act in such a crazy way Whatever it is that you do when you do what you're doing It's a feeling I wanna stay Time after time after time I try to fight it But your love is strong and keeps on holding on Resistance down when you're around pride's fading My condition I don't wanna be alone Cause my heart starts beating triple time With thoughts of loving you on my mind Can't figure out just what to do When the cause and cure is you Time after time after time I try to fight it But your love is strong and keeps on holding on Resistance down when you're around pride's fading My condition I don't wanna be alone Cause my heart starts beating triple time With thoughts of loving you on my mind Can't figure out just what to do When the cause and cure is you I get so weak in the knees I can hardly speak I lose all control and something takes over me In a daze it is so amazing it's not a phase I want you to stay with me by my side I swallow my pride your love is so sweet It knocks me right off of my feet
@Sans Elle, it's in 6/4, and they repeat a similar phrase every two measures. The hits lie on the downbeat, and after that the second 16th note of every beat in the first measure. In the second measure. The hits are on 1, the 2nd 16th note of 2, 4, and the 2nd 16th note of 5. It does some other weird stuff in the chorus, but that's the general idea of it, as far as I can tell
@beantown28 same here... first time i heard it my heart nearly skipped a beat. When I started hearing how simple the time signature really was it didn't wanna believe it :P.. Their execution is brilliant :D.
Gretchen's work helps to restore at least a modicum of faith in modern music in America despite the fact that Americans are largely too unsophisticated to truly appreciate it. Go 'head, GP.
So coming back to music: I think this piece is pure gold. I get dizzy trying to figure out all the metrics used here. Can someone actually give me the set of metrics in this song -after the drum solo of course ;) I fall for the piano on this piece. And actually I really can feel some Robert Glasper's spirit here. And also a little something of Bjork in Gretchen's singing.
I think the verse at least is in a really slow 6/4 (boom-click-boom-click-boom-click). You can really hear it on the "my heart starts beating triple time..." section.
you can actuallly figure it out but why? why would you do that instead of just enjoy listening to it? for sure mark didn't sit down and think about that berforehand or while playing ....
Chris Dave and Mark Guiliana are two of the best drummers out there (probably ever), definitely my two favourite. But Guiliana definitely isn't 'copying' Chris Dave. They both have unique styles. Don't confuse that with copying just cause Guiliana isn't playing gospel chops like 80% of the other up and coming drummers who ARE 'unashamedly copying' each other.
Clearly a lot of the comments r from those who don't knw music! Do your homework before u judge, she's doin it her own way not like the original clowns! It's Jazz the form of sound can go anywhere.
I agree that it would have been smart to make a separate video for the solo, but to say he is just playing around is very musically uninformed. The solo was probably a transitional piece between two songs but it represents its own piece and it is extremely well executed. He is telling a story with the drums. Notice how he presents a theme, expands on it, and then explores new themes, yet all the themes are interrelated. It is a wonderful solo.
I think I'd be fine with the drums, if the uploader had made a separate video titled "Gretchen Parlato @ Copenhagen Jazzfestival - Mark Guiliana Drum Solo". But I really feel that a lot of what the drummer is doing has nothing to do with the song "Weak" and is just him playing around.
Let's not get technical they are flat out good go Taylor I've watched the Harker Series, the man is a virtuoso, the band is very talented very very very!!!!!
@@fingazfunk you got good ears bro'. This is fantastic version that never gets old for me. Saw her live a few years back. Effortless voice. I just found out today in fact that she and one of my favorite drummers Mark Giuliani are married. Peace.
Pdrum Pdrum Yeah man, Glasper really hit the ball out of the park with this one. Two unique time signatures merged together. Stellar trio going nuts in the live performance. And Gretchen is flawless course. I imagine the live show you saw was amazing.
@@fingazfunk bro it was fantastic and like I said, her voice is effortless, she kinda has this whispery, vocal thing going on like there is no strain at all......hard to explain, but yeah she is phenomenal. Fantastic musicians too!......Peace.
Da faqqqqqq, man, how dare u, comparing them. mark guilliana is such an inspiration for chris and chris for mark. they both are high in skylevel. their styles are not the same either, chris will be always leaning to hipH wave .
I think you need to give the drum solo another watch and pay more attention this time. I'm guessing you're not a drumme,r but the solo was hardly over-indulgent or just Mark showing how fast he cam play. He overlays rhythms, modulates meters, and uses unique hand to foot combinations to create new patterns of sound. He is being creative, not showing off. Plus, he played almost the entire solo between his bass, hi-hat, and snare, which takes discipline. That isn't what I would call over-indulgent
Incredible, maddening accents tease the brain in this tune. Probably too progressive and idiosyncratic to be a hit, but really cool nonetheless. Wild & beautiful.
they are great drummers but Travis Barker...:D joking but Eric Harland, Mark Colenburg... are pretty good too. Everyone have own best drummer ;) you cant tell who is the best drummer in the world ;)
your prof pic is white, so idk who "we" refers to. Assuming you are black, I'd say that black people get all the love for jazz. Thats a good thing. That is deserved. When you think of jazz, you think of Miles, Trane, Parker, Monk, etc. Black. This is just a modern take on jazz, and its also great.
Why tell people they should not be enjoying what they are actually enjoying? This is such a strange state of mind. Some might like the drummer, others might prefer the pianist, what is the big fuss here? It is a matter of outmost importance? Chill out, it's only music.
his dynamics are crazy. people just don't understand. this dude is sick! and his footwork is so outstanding.
Piano player is SMASHING the solo!!!
would LOVE to see him and Chris Dave jam.... it could quite possibly be mind melting

Good to hear folks tackling more recent pop/soul in an adventurous way. Killin' all the way around!
The accents in the song are amazing. I love the way the time signature seems hopelessly lost. Good Show!! Mark is incredible on drums.
Wow I love her and her band man that 6/4 timing is serious !!
6 dislikes of people that do not real music because this ridiculously fantasic

wtf? mark is one of the greatest drummers in the world and that solo was extremely original and impressive
Genius! Tip of the hat to you!
Incredible!
hahaha the drum solo makes me laugh! in a good way! it's so much freaking fun hahaha

I don't know what it is that you've done to me
But it's caused me to act in such a crazy way
Whatever it is that you do when you do what you're doing
It's a feeling I wanna stay
Time after time after time I try to fight it
But your love is strong and keeps on holding on
Resistance down when you're around pride's fading
My condition I don't wanna be alone
Cause my heart starts beating triple time
With thoughts of loving you on my mind
Can't figure out just what to do
When the cause and cure is you
Time after time after time I try to fight it
But your love is strong and keeps on holding on
Resistance down when you're around pride's fading
My condition I don't wanna be alone
Cause my heart starts beating triple time
With thoughts of loving you on my mind
Can't figure out just what to do
When the cause and cure is you
I get so weak in the knees I can hardly speak
I lose all control and something takes over me
In a daze it is so amazing it's not a phase
I want you to stay with me by my side
I swallow my pride your love is so sweet
It knocks me right off of my feet
Beautiful.

Man this would be good to hear live!

I wonder if Sisters With Voices has heard this version... SWV would be so proud !!
WOOOOOWW WOT A SOLO !!!
everyone have their own way of expressing themselves...come on man,it's art...
love it
Big Jojo Mayer influence here and i love every second of it!
untouchable chops
Crazy good...I gotta work this out..
looool the drumma is crazy, man
Oh and who ever talks about the drummer here: listen to 5:55-6:20 as a sample of great fills...the last one brings a smile to Alan Hamptons face...
WOW!
It's amazing how the piano solo resembles a lot some Pat Metheny guitar solo. Listen to it and you'll see. GREAT!

太赞同你了!我超级喜欢Chris Dave
TAYLOR IS SO DAMN INSPIRATIONAL****
The drummer is silly. He's just plain silly. He's hittin all the spectrums of rhythm. That's that silly I likes.
Real cat`s......real musicians!!!!!
Mark is a best of a drummer, one of my favorites ... but that solo was like, "wtf"?...
the intro reminds me of some Terreon Gully video lyin around here on youtube. only just reminds.
@humdilila Haha, check out mark guiliana's other shit if you're confused. He was being creative in this one. Unbelievable drummer. Must check out.
Clearly a lot of the comments r from those who don't knw music! Do your homework before u judge, she's doin it her own way not like the original clowns! It's Jazz the form of sound can go anywhere.
@dhkim199 Pay attention and you'll find it.
Hardcore Drum'n'Bass Drummer!
Man, jazz trolls are the worst.
hahaha, 3:37 - "woah!"
precisely my reaction.

@fingazfunk I can't tell if there is sarcasm in your post but this is Robert Glasper's arrangement.
I wasn’t being sarcastic actually. At the time I had no idea Glasper had anything to do with it. A very pleasant surprise you can imagine.
What the hell is up with the load time on this wonderful video?
@OaklandBop wow he´s good ;)
Anyone know what Kind of Snare he's using? /// The groove in this song is GROOVEtastic

this is ssome bad ass shit!
Lota dumb comments here...
This is pure talent!!!
@MrColinAdhikary thanks! i checked him out! he is pretty fucking sick. good looking out!
@fingazfunk They've added to it tastefully though I might add. But the main groove was Robert Glasper's brainchild
Let's not get technical they are flat out good go Taylor I've watched the Harker Series, the man is a virtuoso, the band is very talented very very very!!!!!
what model is the crash that he use in the video?
Does anyone know what piano is being used in this clip? I looove it's tone
what kind of camera was used?
This would sound sick if Robert Glasper covered it with Lalah Hathaway singing,in fact it sounds like a Glasper tune. Beautiful!
It is. It's a Glasper rearrangement.
Pdrum Pdrum yep. I learned that later on. I guess I was somewhat tuned in and didn’t know it. Lol

皮克去弹钢琴了哈哈
@dhkim199 all over the place :)
The song starts at 5:00
thats so in the pocket its unreal
This drums solo is similar to gamelan music
With a little Glenn Gould thrown in.
Da faqqqqqq, man, how dare u, comparing them. mark guilliana is such an inspiration for chris and chris for mark. they both are high in skylevel. their styles are not the same either, chris will be always leaning to hipH wave .
Funky
Fucking hell!
drum solo cracked me the fuck up someone pleas halt my unrelenting lamter
What cymbals is he using
For sure the left crash is a Sabian AAX Aero crash
It's too bad your musical mind is too underdeveloped to appreciate this Mark's playing.
I know exactly who she is and who she's played with and my point for THIS video still stands. Bye.

but he´s using a double pedal isn´t he?
Absolutely not
the bass drum sounded funny
@ufip22 ... I know right.. I don't get it..
they are great drummers but Travis Barker...:D joking but Eric Harland, Mark Colenburg... are pretty good too. Everyone have own best drummer ;) you cant tell who is the best drummer in the world ;)

Duration of the intro : a weak
not sure how I feel about this drum solo......
Drummers who couldn't follow the drum solo in the beginning haha
ok... WHO GAVE MR BEAN A DRUMKIT ...
I can't believe you just insulted Mark Guiliana's playing!
this is so different from the rest of marks shit but its so dope
Chris daddy dave?? Not.lol

The only thing I disliked was her dress :)
I've heard better drum solos but a lot of drummers could not come close to playing the song as well as Mark did.
The drum solo was straight for the first 15 secs....The performance was great though!
