  • In this Video, we take a look at a BBC Master Compact 128K.
The Acorn BBC Master Compact, I've always found these to be an odd machine, not really sure of their place within the Acorn range of the mid 1980s. It was preferable to own the far more versatile Master 128, but, the Master Compact was also an interesting option, supplied with a monitor stand, that also contained a 3.5" floppy disk drive and PSU. The problem with my system, is the all too common 'continuous beep of death'. I have cleaned and re-seated all of the removable chips, and off camera, checked the continuity of each cable on the Keyboard connector. I have yet to connect the unit to a VDU, but, that will be the next test, to see if a prompt appears.
Worst case, I may need to replace the 6522 chips, if so, I'll add some 40 pin sockets, making the chips removable. Ideally, I need to invest in a suitable scope, so as to be able to conduct even more indepth troubleshooting.
Any comments and suggestions, are more than welcome.
Odd fact, the machine was also marketed as an Olivetti!
