This woman has never ever made a bad record... A far superior singer to Diana Ross.. With the tightest backing singers ever.. This song runs like a steam train..
Marvin's version gets a lot of play, but if you want to MOVE, baby......this is the 'Grapevine' for you !! Gladys and the guys will have you on the dance floor before you know it. I dare you to keep your feet still for this one.
Gladys and the Pips definitely own this song...hands down.. more enegry and for me, just more soul than Marvin's. I read there was some politics and great consternation when Marivn's version was released. Gladys felt she and the Pip version was undermined.
@@mspraggins Blame Berry Gordy. He refused to allow the release of Marvin Gaye's version, which was the second recorded version, as The Miracles recorded it first.
+CashPresley32 She just said black beauty, she didn't say that only black people are beautiful, its kind of common sense that every race has beautiful people and we are aware of that duh
Gladys, CCR and Marvin all have equally good versions of this song. They each fit a different mood and a different listener. This is one of few songs where three different artists can do the song justice in their own way.
I always knew the Marvin and CCR version. Going tomorrow to see the John Fogerty and he will preform CCR songs, and i wanted to google who really sang this song first and here i m. Great song and amazing atmosphere. PS i always tought that this masterpiece was originally from Marvin.
It was even better when she did it live at gigs ,she used to rip it up with the pips & then bring it on down & then rip it up & belt it out again . Gladys is the Empress of soul / R&B / pop soul ,she was taking people to church when she was only about 6 years old & has been doing ever since .
What a beautiful woman she has always been. Even as she has aged, mother nature has been very kind to her. It's such a shame a vocal minority of haters would speak bad about her just because of the color of her skin.
I was bartending in nyc around 2007 and the owner didnt me allow to play hip hop. It killed me so i did the next best thing and play the soul station and this song always reminds me of how much better i am now. Id have never heard all the motown and soul songs if not for that. Beautiful music. ❤️
Definitely my favorite R&B singer and Gladys Knight and the Pips really knock this song out of the park. Best version. Also my favorite of their many great songs. She is so young in this video but always drop dead gorgeous and such a fine lady.
@@LuvTadnDixie you can consider all you want, dowsnake it so. Aretha is and always will be The Queen of Soul, and has the record to prove it. I love Gladys and if there never was an Aretha Louise Franklin she would be Queen of so, but since there was sorry but ,no, she isn't. Aretha earned the title Queen of Soul and rightfully so, but it was her Destiny to be so even before it was manifested
Gladys is MY queen of soul, I guess. Not saying that Aretha didn't deserve the title. I just love Gladys Knight and I would consider her a queen too. LOVE her voice.
Gladys Knight and I believe the one Pip left played at Jazzfest in Ottawa, Ontario a few years back. She blew me away. Her voice, her energy took me back a few decades. To me, she is the Queen of Soul.
This style of song can not just be sang! You have to belt it! Soulful songs such as this, has to be shouted to get its full essence and potency...If you're not getting hoarse, well, you're just not singing it right!!!! Gladys did one hell of a job on this!!!
Gladys Knight was a #1 Singer!! It seems that she get the recognition as Aretha Franklin. They were the Artists along with "The Temptations" & Smokey!!
FML how fucking beautiful is this woman!?!?!? I mean her voice is bananas but shhiiiiii......she is gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn, music is missing women like this!
Gladys was sexy back in the day and she still looks great for her age. She can sing like nobody's business too. Her husband is a very lucky man indeed; salute.
Although this is a world away from Marvin Gaye's all time classic, her voice and smile make it worth watching although I would never have guessed that Gladys Knight would be capable of the magnificent 'The Way We Were', especially the Live in Chile version.

It was first recorded by Smokey Robinson, then Gladys Knight, but it was Marvin's version that popularized it, also reaching number 80 in the Rolling Stone magazines list of the greatest 500 songs in all genres in history
I must say that Gladys is my favorite soul singer, because snging brought HER joy and in turn, it allowed us to feel that joy~ isn't that what music is about?!
Nothing better than the TWO Motown readings of this song: Marvin Gaye, and Gladys Knight & The Pips. One is more insidious with a deep blues underpinning, and the second version takes us right to church, with its call-and-response vocals, and upbeat telling of a really unhappy situation. This is why people in the industry always end up coming back and covering these songs from the 50's - 70's . They are among the best ever penned by any composer in any era. Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Soul
Gladys Knight is the Goddess of Soul 💗💙💜💚❤💛💕💕💕

Woo woo! My favorite version. Rock it Gladys!
GLADYS" and Marvin had the 60s LIT
this woman has one of the best voices ever!
No wonder, as The Queen of soul !
The Empress of Soul! And, she is still going strong at 75!

This is my favorite version. Gladys and the pips have the sound and the moves.
THE only voice...ugh--EVER--I literaaly have no words---45+ years,s till in......GOAT
Our divine diva Gladys CAN NOT be out done with this all-time classic! Not a soul would be left not dancing at the club when this tune was played.
We partied real hard to this song; walls sweating and all we needed was chips and soda and throw a party.

One of the most soulful voices in music history. She has a way of reflecting emotion in every piece she sings, LOVE her to bits.
Gladys does this the best!! Many will try, but no one comes close!!
Bruce Baldwin I’ve been saying this for years!!!
Bruce Baldwin YES GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS 😃😃😃😃😃
