- There are thirty six rituals to be observed and followed for the Sabaimala Pilgrimage, out of which eighteen(18) DOs and eighteen(18) DONOTs are there..
Eighteen Do’s:-
1)MALADHARANAM:-
For SABARIMALA YATRA, the prime duty is the Maladharanam. As far as possible the Mala, should be worn through Guruswamy with whom the Bhaktha intend to perform the Yatra. If Guruswamy could not be contacted, the wearing of the Mala can be had through his mother or father or at any temple Sannidhanam. The Mala can be of either Rudraksham or Tulasi.
(2) As a main principle, Mala should be worn first and then the VRATHAM starts which should be observed for a minimum of 41 days and to be completed before the commencement of the Yatra.
(3) From the day of Mala Dharan and commencement of Vratham, the Bhaktas should take bath twice every day, i.e., early in the morning and after Sun set and to do small pooja at both the times. Also should chant SARANAMS before closing the Pooja.
(4) BRAMACHARIYAM:- Should be observed very strictly during the Vratham period till the reaching of their home after the Dharsanam and Abishekam at Sabarimala.
(5) During the Vratham period, Bakthas should take only limited food as required to subside the hunger.
(6) During this period always speak TRUTH and Talk LESS.
(7) What ever may be your daily work, you have to do for your livelihood, do it with full devotion on Lord Ayyappa and discharge it in the correct manner.
(8) Treat all living creatures, as they are also created by the GOD, like us.
(9) While talking with others (whether they are Ayyappa Swamis or not) the main Taraka Manthram, i.e. Swami Saranam should be uttered with every sentence you use.
(10) Try to be, as far as possible in the company of small Ayyappa group so that you can gain more experience about the Yatra and Vratham.
(11) During this period, as far possible, try to take part in the Poojas and Bhajans.
(12) Before the date of commencement of Yatra, within your capacity, if possible, do a small Pooja and do a small scale ANNADANAM to poor and needy people. The guidance in all the connected books clearly says that Ayyappas should do ANNADANAM to poor. Feeding Ayyappas Bhakthas with big feast, assuming that we are satisfying Lord Ayyappa, is a great Sin, as during this period the Ayyappa Bakthas should have restricted food.
(12) Try always to be calm and even when you are being provoked by others, control your temper and say the only word “ SARANAM AYYAPPA”
(14) Address all men as “Ayyappa or Swami” (Not only Vratham Ayyappas) and ladies and girls, including your wife as “MALIGAPURAM” and boys as “Manikanta”. Especially the Muslims should addressed as VAVAR SWAMY.
(15) The main principle of Ayyappa Deeksha is, that all religions and castes are to be treated as ONE. Any body (Whether they are Christians, Muslims or other religion) having faith in Ayyappa, can worship Him. Ladies can participate in Poojas and Bhajans, but only girls below 10 years who have not attained Maturity and Ladies who have reached menopause, after certain age, can very well perform the Yatra duly observing the Vratham.
(16) Manasa, Vaacha and Karmana (with mind, word and duty) have full devotion to Lord.
(17) Though there is no prescribed dress to wear during this Vratham and Yatra period, to distinguish you as Ayyappa on Deeksha either black, blue or saffron dresses can be worn.
(18) As your mind is always occupied with devotion, it is desired to have always atleast Viboothi or Kumkumam or Chandanam or Namam on the forehead.

एक पौराणिक कथा आहे. महिषी राक्षसीचा मृत्यू महादेव व विष्णू ह्यांच्या संतानाद्वारे होऊ शकतो असे वरदान तिला प्राप्त होते. तिच्या अत्याचाराचा उपाय म्हणून स्वामी अय्यप्पांचा जन्म झाला. समुद्र मंथनाच्या वेळी विष्णूनी मोहिनी रूप धारण करून राक्षसांकडून अमृत हस्तगत केले. महादेव मोहिनीरूपावर भाळले. त्यातन एक बालक जन्माला आले. ते बालक म्हणजेच स्वामी अय्यप्पा ( म्हणूनच त्याना हरिहरपुत्र असेही नाव आहे)केरळ प्रांतातील एका निपुत्रिक राजाराणीला ते बालक दिले. पुढे राणीला स्वतःचे बाळ झाल्यावर ती अय्यप्पाचा दुस्वास करू लागली. त्यांना आपल्या कुटुंबातून दूर करण्यासाठी अय्यपाला " बाळंतरोगासाठी वाघीणीचे दूध हवे असल्याचा बहाणा करून" शबरीमलय च्या निबीड अरण्यात पाठवले. अरण्यात हिंस्त्र पशूंची विशेषतः वाघांची दाटी होती.राणीला वाटले वाघांसमोर अय्यपांचा टिकाव लागणार नाही. उलटपक्षी अय्यपा वाघांच्या मोठ्या कळपाबरोबर राणीकडे आले व तिला वाघीणीचे दूध देऊ केले. वाघ अय्यपा समोर नतमस्तक झाले होते. राणी खजिल झाली. पण अय्यपानी मात्र झाल्याप्रकारानंतर गृहत्याग करायचा निर्णय घेतला व वाघांबरोबर ते परत जंगलात निघून गेले.
वर सांगीतल्याप्रमाणे त्यांनी महिषी राक्षसीचा वध केला व तिच्या अत्याचारातून लोकांची सुटका केली. अश्या त्यांच्या पराक्रमाच्या अनेक कथा आहेत.

Waha se bus pakadkar pampa Ana 147 km h. Train se AANA H tho koi bhi Kerala train pakdo.nearest railway station chenganur mei h. Waha se 84 km pampa bus stand tak distance h

Really this is how a teertha Yatra should be, with tapasya and Bhakti. Then only Phala of Teertha Yatra is gained. Nowadays people visit teerthas as a vacation spot. I have seen this personally in many places, where focus is on comfort rather than devotion towards the Deity.

I belong to Saurashtra family and born in Tamil Nadu. Every year we observe Sabarimala Mandal Vrat for 48 days. After that we used to go to Sabarimala with a member of our group (S.P.S.S sabarimala yatra group). We will use the traditional trekking route every time. The specialty of this route (Punya Pungavanam) is that Lord Sabari used this route to complete his goal of Kaliyuga. So it is true that we can also use this way to get the full blessings of Ayyan. The distance of this route is about 48 miles and the Ayyappan forest is a sanctuary for elephants and tigers......

I recently went to kerela and had visited anantpadmanabhswamy and goddess Durga temple ( name I couldn’t follow , it’s in Cochin ) . There I had witnessed the pilgrims who were to visit Shree swamy Sabarimala temple . With a help of a local residing relative I was able to come across the full story of rituals being followed by devotees of swamy Sabarimala for 41 days . I was really awestruck by the devotion being followed in keeping the sanctity , also since it was very month of the temples visit , so we were able to see lot of people going for this pilgrimage. I was not able to visit Shree swamy Sabarimala but I always wanted to see . Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. It’s really the places like these which really shakes us to the very inner core and provide us abundant positive energy.
The devi temple may be Chottanikkara (place near Cochin) Devi temple
The thought in mind was what Lakshmi here said too... It could be chottanikkara temple. And u could visit too.. maybe it take a bit time. But its worth it. Im not even a believer to core yet when vrischika month come i got this urge to got and see ayyappa no matter what. It's something u will see when u go there

Thanks for the wonderful video.. People will know about the rich and ancient temple traditions of every temple of Kerala. Please do a video on the famous Vadakkumnathan Shiva temple of Thrissur. It is believed that parents of Sri Sankaracharya prayed in Vadakkumnathan temple for a son and then after their prayers Sri Sankaracharya was born to them. The literal meaning of Vadakkumnathan is God of the North and it is seen that Kashi Viswanath temple is closed on the day of Thrissur pooram which happens every year in front of Vadakkumnathan temple as Lord Shiva of Kashi is attending Thrissur pooram. Thrissur pooram is a yearly temple festival in which around 101 elephants are involved in front of the temple. It is a must visit temple for all Shiva bhakts

Overall good video..Misleading around vritham practices..I am from TN..Millions of devotees in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, AP, Karnataka do the vritham for 42 days..perhaps it is a bit diluted in the translator's circle in Kerala, where he takes vritham for a few days and then go to sabarimalai..But in the video it is claimed no one follows these rituals these days..My guruswami and several guruswami's i know do not take anyone in the yathra who has not completed 42 days vritham..the translator is making casual and misleading statements..

The Vritham is 41 days (one Mandala).
The custom is to take vrtam for 41 days. You may visit the temple inbetween, but has to take entire 41 days starting from Vrishickam 1st to Dhanu 11th or 12th. During this entire period, you wear the Mala.
But the reality today is different in Kerala. Majority don't take 41 days of fasting as its too cubersome to maintain the purity. So in most cases, one week before going temple, they wear Mala, observe fasting for a week and then visit temple and remove the Mala as soon as they return back. So overall, max of 10-14 days of fasting is taken.

A few things which blew my mind regrading shabarimala. These are things which I understood from my guruswami, my grandparents and some that i deduced. Humbly noting it here if it helps someone to know more about the journey. Kindly correct me if there is any difference.
In the entrance to shabarimala temple it is written, "tatvamasi" which means "it is you". This translates to, whatever that you are looking for (Lord ayappa) is inside you. Thus once we put on the sacred maala, we have to live like ayyappa swami, clean everyday, eat swasthik food, think and act good etc.
Another thing is that, we empty a coconut and fill it with ghee. Coconut is a representation of our body and ghee our soul. We carry all our body, soul and every bad deed we did till now along with us in the irumudi kettu. Finally at shabarimala we open the coconut and present the ghee to Lord Ayyappa, which translates to presenting our soul to Ayyappa and we return back as a clean soul. We also burn the coconut at the temple, meaning all the bad things we did is burned away at His presence.
