What if the "born to be" isn't simply repeating itself? "You're not who you're born to be" followed by "You're born to be" would mean that the man isn't SOMEONE he was born to be, but that he was born to just be, not in a specific way.
god, I honestly really love that interpretation
Trust me, it is better you are not that man. The world does not need more jerks who are too concerned about/blinded by their own massive egos to be bothered about how their actions affect anyone else. We have plenty of those. I wish that kind of behavior was not reinforced in society. We need more empathetic individuals who care about welfare of other people and use their intellect and creativity to problem solve. There is so much more to life than sex and ego. Anyhow, this is a nice song. I like it as well as the art.
I think that, in this song, the poetic self is misguided, for just the reason you said. He wants to be confident and he sees the worst kind of confidence: the one that doesn't care about others and simply hurts. The poetic self isn't really looking at the actions, he is looking at the fact that one needs confidence to perform them. It's a very interesting point of view, to envy a trait performed by, as you said, jerks.
This makes me think that the "poor boy" and "runs in the family" aspect of the song are not towards the poetic self, and that it's still himself talking to the confident idol, perhaps because the poetic self does notice there is something wrong with that man he envies, if only sometimes.
This is my interpretation, still. I just discovered this band and as of now I think this is one of those lyrics that portray a character one can stop to analyze for a bit.
I found this song last year when I was having a maniac episode. I listened to it on repeat like my life depended on it, so now it's linked to those specific days in my head. Not in a bad way, it just makes me remember that mental state. The picture in the background also gives me some psychotic vibes, with the swaying flowers in vibrant colors, but that's probably because, like I said, I relate this song and video to a maniac episode. And I love it.
The background fits perfect for this song omg
Is this from around 2008 or more recently? One of the best Hoosiers tracks can't believe it's been kept a secret
is was released in 2015 on the "The Secret Service" album! also, i agree that this is one of their best songs, i somehow end up adding it to every playlist lol
I'd like to be the man who runs amok in broad daylight
Who vested interested is met with the biggest bite
I'd like to be the man who doesn't run from the fight
I'd like to be the man who cannot keep it in his pants
So comfortable in his skin you can't help but be entranced
I'd like to be the man, oh, but I think the chance has passed
Cause I know I'm not your first
Don't even know if I'm your last
I'd like to be the man who leaves no tip and doesn't care
Who unapologetically leaves chewing gum under chairs
I wish I was a son of a bitch who didn't give a shit
Who was busy kicking ass, not busy being hit
You're a hard lesson to learn, aren't you
You're a cause for concern
Poor boy, you're not who you're born to be
It runs in the family, the family, the family
Poor boy, conflicted so constantly
It runs in the family, the family, the family
I'd like to be the man who gets to stick it in reverse
Does what the hell he wants and doesn't care who's left off worse
I would like to be the man who cannot keep it in his pants
Scared I'll do things different if I ever get the chance
You're a hard lesson to learn
Poor boy, you're not who you're born to be
It runs in the family, the family, the family
Poor boy, conflicted so constantly
It runs in the family, the family, the family
It runs in the family, the family, the family
You're not who you're born to be, you're born to be, you're born to be
You're not who you're born to be, you're born to be, you're born to be
Poor boy, you're not who you're born to be
It runs in the family, the family, the family
