- Dusty Springfield was one of the worlds greatest female singers - and here is the proof. Here is Dusty, in top form, performing a tune she never recorded herself (but sang live from time to time), "Knowing when to leave" from Burt Bacharach's musical "Promises, Promises". This version is from Burt's TV special that was aired in june 1970. I have no rights to this whatsoever. If you own the rights then please let me know. If you want me to remove this from UA-cam then again, please let me know and I will do it without hesitation. I just want to salute Dusty's memory and spread her talents (and Burt's) all over the world for more people to hear. You don't hear music of this kind of quality often enough. Thank you Dusty and Burt for everything you have given me.
I can't believe that last note. She's always been one of my favs.
The whole song was fabulous... Then the final note was glass shattering. The greatest of all time, Dusty!
At her peak, nobody could touch her. Here she is..at her peak. A lesson in how to sing/interpret a very difficult Bacharach/David song and still make it your own. The judicious use of some r&b riffs at the end.."oh baby, except when to leeeaaaaave..." Sheer Brilliance.
Her phrasing is divine and the ending note cadence is fabulous
Good one. This screams 1970--the set, the timeless gold Burt Bacharach hit and...Dusty.
A difficult song to sing but, she did a fantastic job as always!! Left us too soon.
This song STILL gives me gooseflesh each time I hear it. So powerful and beautiful...just like Dusty herself. Much love and respect to her and Burt Bacharach.
Incredibly beautiful breathy vocal by Dusty here. So much control and technique.
True talent to sing live with a phantom orchestra as she said with Burt right there. Rehearsed arranged and then let it go. Pure talent
such a great performance - such a hard song - can't imagine anyone pulling it off like this insanely talented woman!
Very hard song
Greater voice than people knew in her time; a fine singer!
Her finest performance of this song!
I never knew how big Dusty was through the 60's. It was breathtaking to realize that here is a great performer who is hardly mentioned these days. Talent -wise you could put all the singing chicks from now, put them in a box, and they would not fill up the box like Dusty would. I can't understand how a talent like this gets no mention.
I just love her hand gestures..=)
spcb77 me too
She acted when she sang
Absolutely love this song. Also like Karen Carpenter singing this. Somehow this just hits me more.
Childhood is our true homeland. I remember this when I was a kid and I'm happy...
I appreciate her more and more. amazing
Wow! She was something. That's a very hard song to sing, too. Dusty was one-of-a-kind.
That last note...OMG
Miss Krystal Ball yes!!!
Simply the best
Wow! never knew Dusty did this great uplifting song, what a cracking version, thanks for posting.
The UK's greatest singer ever.
Those drums are insane!
I keep coming back to this video and others several times, year after year! Need my Dusty fix 🥰🥰🥰
Wonderful Dusty
DUSTY SHINES HERE...A VERY DIFFICULT SONG TO SING. BRAVO DUSTY XXX
fabulosa!!
fantastic! I miss her!
AWESOME!!!!!!
Wonderful - she owns this! Love her soulful trail at 1:40! She really knows how to paint the images. Too bad these two didn't work more together - they seem like they genuinely liked each other.
They did , they did !
Lord she was magnificent!
LOVE!
xoxo The Clarences
Love Love Love
love that woman
Amazing
Now watch her perform with Burt "A House is Not a Home" from the same show, Delectable Magic! NO ONE can match our Dear Treasured Dusty!
Alan Ellaway completely agreed
What a difficult song to sing, and make your own, but Dusty nails it ! My favourite version !
She was a great singer but the Carpenters also recorded this and Karen was also superb.
The best version!!! Dusty could sing any song and make it better than before!
Thank you for this video .Never seen it before ,thanks again - :-)
Dusty Springfield was simply one of the worlds greatest singers.
Fantastic singer, like you Paul...
This is truly magnificent, Dusty as I've never seen her before. Thank you, Paul
Cool!!! Just wonderful!
Pattigee 1, you are so right.
thispauloscal , i thank you very much for posting this awesome clip of one of my all time favourite singers, and along with burt and the great hal david , the greatest composers of popular music of all time. this level of talent will never be seen again
Fabulous thanks tons ;o)))
Pure brilliance just amazing
She was wonderful.
That song may have been hard for Dusty to sing, but she followed it with one of the greatest performances on the planet - "A House is Not a Home"!
Oh yes...superb performance...don’t recall the song but I love it...thanks for sharing...
Wow!... Fantastic!... Wonderful...❤
I love her valley of the dolls hair
ohhh sooo awsum dude i gotta download this
Great singer great song
Wow, Dusty and Burt! As a marriage of song and performer, this almost reaches the heights of Cardi and Megan singing 'WAP'. While nothing can compare to the latter achievement, Dusty shows some strong Broadway chops here.
Dusty soaring through this song up until 1:33 when she brings it down to a whisper and than back up to a soar. Such vocal control and prowess. A very demanding melody line and she pulls it out of the hat beautifully. Plus, tempo being a little slow makes it all the harder to pull it off. Only one Dusty.
Indeed, I classically trained for years and years, and on,y in that discipline, and mapping out a pathway can an artist achieve true vocal freedom and just sing on the emotion. But the work needs to be done. No short cuts in quality.
Her artistry is breathtaking.
the one and only xoxo
Dusty was the best, post-crooner era, white pop/rock/soul/jazz/traditional singer ever! Regardless of gender.
Wow! I just became the 500th person to hit "Like" on this. The song and the singer (and the songwriter) are incomperable. I so wish she had done a studio recording of it. Well, we have this, anyway. Just terrific.
Wow! A tough song and she nailed it. Is this full TV special available somewhere?
A natural talent
Why is nobody talking about the head voice at 2:16? I loved her already but I didn’t know she was capable of that!
Dusty could sing the phone book (ask your parents, kids) and it would sound dreamy.
Great song, great wig!
Indeed A very difficult song to sing !
Pure blue eyed soul.
Dusty .... my girl .... the white Queen of soul. Type yes if you agree.
yes
yes, the best.
Yes , one of a kind
@@charles5596 indeed the white queen of soul --
There will be another who can sing as Great as Dusty.....
The perfect voice for Bacharach/ David work. She was also a fantastic singer and a beautiful woman. One of the best British exports to the world.
Gorgeous light pink dress
This song is a minefield. Not my favorite Bacharach at all. But she nails it!
Listen to Karen Carpenter nail it.
Dusty and Burt are a match made in heaven
I would love to see the entire show. Anyone know if it's on DVD anywhere?
Darren Carstairs Dailymotion channel: Another Evening With Burt Bacharach!
IMO Dusty flourished in the 60's because composers at that time wrote material worthy of her golden talent.
Bacharach was not easy to please, had high expectations there were not many artists that could work with him in person. Rehearsal with him was tough!
Very underrated singer.
Dusty Springfield Bobbie Gentry Carole King what a class what a mermaids were..
Beautiful, Dusty’s magic touch on this one. Even though others did it, they all are brilliant, love that era of different singers doing Bacharach tunes, love it 👍🍻🍻❤️
I wonder why BURT lied on this tv special, saying that he wrote "Wishin' & Hopin' " for DUSTY. BURT & HAL wrote it for DIONNE in 1962 and it appears on her first album "PRESENTING DIONNE WARWICK." DUSTY recorded it in 1964.
What stunning and blonde dame she was
I often wonder how a song like this gets written.....
I mean did Hal David write three uneven, non-scanning lines like...
Go while the going is good
Knowing when to leave can be the smartest thing that anyone can learn
Go.
.....and then fax them to the composer, with a note "OK Crackerjack, fit something to that"
Burt: "Hold my beer"
Bacharach said that he was happy not to be a great pianist - if he was, he said, he felt that his hands would trap him in all the stuff he'd done before.
As far as musical quirkiness/innovation goes, it worked for him and Hal !
I didn't know that somg
And let's not forget the songwriter Burt Bacharach who died just now.
Don't ever call Dusty Springfield a chick! Althought I'm a big fan of The Carpenters, I still think this version is great.
They seemed really friends
my favorite artist to sing this song was by Karen Carpenter ...R.I.P. Burt Bachatach,Dusty Springfield,Karen Carpenter..and to ALL the great composers, artists and performers...Thank you for the music, memories of a better time...Music is absolutely ATROCIOUS in these times...Thank God for UA-cam where we can watch, listen and still enjoy ALL the music thar "WAS" ...my ending quote " Good Music Never Dies" ....peace,love & light to ALL ☮🕊💞🎇✨ my best loved version of "Knowing When To Leave" (1976) 💗🎶🎤💗➡ ua-cam.com/video/qlo9Uk57MHA/v-deo.html
alot of sets built in 1970 would look timeless several years later
i never heard this from dusty and she is Adele's role model I think ! love them both!
Love to hear adele doing dusty ' old songs....that would be magic as hers are a wee bit sad
dusty had a very well trained voice
Was this a BBC Special?
Not BBC From rival British commercial company ATV, known internationally as ITC
@@Efferpheasants Thx. I know the ITC. Have watched many fine programs on it.
@@jeffg1524 ATV lost its franchise to broadcast around 1980 - the rival stations on the network were concerned that it was exceeding its quota of programs by disguising itself as another company ITC and filling the air with schmaltzy variety and fantasy programs - ironically it was a documentary 'death of a princess' which upset the Arabs (think oil) which was the final nail in the coffin.
Do you what was her fav song among those she sang?
Dusty is so extra
What a voice and how she soars with this rendition. Dionne was good but Dusty is better....by a mile!
This is the song where a singer sang it they are going to be rich
Did burt and hal david did realize they were writing songs for humans not mutants? Dusty near pass out mid song at 1:29
She would have been a great actress too.
As others have said: this is a difficult song to sing. She really isn't comfortable with the tempo. However, check out Dusty singing this song on the Rolf Harris the following year. The tempo is faster and she delivers a really good performance.
Love this along with Karen Carpenters version
That High Note Is As Good As Any Opera singer Can Perform....
She sang almost as good italian singer mina
