In my opinion it's not good that Assad will fall. This will create a power vacuum again and ground for more Islamist extremism. We need a strong secular government to be in charge in Syria, and Assad is that.

At the beginning of this war Assad was slowly losing and it looked hopeless for him. Until Russia stepped in and with no concerns for civilian casualties essentially bombed rebel held areas back into the stone age. Making existence in these areas not possible for the armed groups. The bombing would stop as Assads troops moved in and took control. Under these conditions it became impossible for the jihadists to win. If they ever took an area they would be bombed back out. Until the fighting got too close to Turkey. Then Turkey declared some areas near their border under Turkish protection and enabled a base for rebels. In fact the rebels mostly were not really rebels, they came from other countries to fight for their brand of Islam. Turkey gave them aid, safe haven, and enabled them to continue. If, as stated in this video Russian support is a lot less than in the past, the tide will again swing against Assad. And as correctly stated in the video, world events have left all Assads allies with other problems on their hands and unable to offer much or any help. Never a better time for the jihadists to strike.

Assad was already killing people without concern. He is the one who started this all. Even the jihadists, did he let in. Only they were meant to make things difficult for the Americans in Irak, but were pushed out. Having nothing else to do, they joined in when Assad started to shoot the peaceful protesters for more democracy. As is said in this interview, and I've heard it elsewhere also, we have yet do see how these people will work out. They seem to have distanced themselves from their jihadist past, so only time will tell.

Thing about that is that a month before the October 7 massacre, a delegation of Palestinian leadership went to Moscow and had discussions with Putin. We do not know what was discussed, but highly likely it included the attack on Israel. What would Putin get out of that? 2 things. First, it would take the attention of the world away from Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Second, the West would send arms to Israel which would reduce their ability to send them to Ukraine. On both counts Putin got what he wanted. But, now the law of unintended consequences has kicked in and Putin's allies seriously weakened, plus he may lose his bases and warm water port in Syria.

This is in no way shape or form an example of a “multi polar world order”. The US backed the Syrian revolutionaries last time. The ones who fought the Assad regime in 2013-16 were moderates…they saved the very last Syrian Jews who had to flee Aleppo as the city collapsed. Personally escorted them to the border where they were taken by airplane to resettle in Israel. So, if these are the same people who were fighting last time they are western allies. Which makes them a MEMBER of the unipolar world, not contrary to it. Of course it’s possible that they’ve been replaced by hardliners. But even so Russia has been propping up the Assad regime for a decade, so if it falls there’s no way to see that as enhancing the “multi polar world order” that Putin has been seeking to promote for years.

@@matthewnewton8812 I was referring to the Putin abandons weak Assad part. That being said, I agree with you, even if I fear, things won't get much better if the rebels win. IMO, it's more a lesser evil thing. As I know, the initial rebels, or parts of them to be more precise, teamed up with Islamists for some time but apparently separated again later on. TBH, the ones I would trust the most in these regions are the Kurds. They have the potential to build up a decent society if they have the chance to. And if the evolved part of the Iranians could get rid of the Ayatollahs, there would be a big improvement in the whole region. This also applies to the Palestinians who are held hostage by Hamas & Co. Personal opinion based on common sense. Some may disagree.

    1. the support for Ukraine
    2. how Russias allies behaves
    3. the support for Putin inside Russia
Why I'm still talking about this 3 years into the FSI I admit is debatable as so many people have lost their lives already.

For those unaware: Jabhat al-Nusra, al- Qaeda's branch in Syria aiming to establish an Islamic state, attacked Aleppo yesterday. Anyone celebrating or supporting them under the guise of opposing the regime is clearly an extremist so be careful with them. This is what make the difference between moderate, secular opposition and extremist Islamists, who unfortunately dominate much of the opposition.

No one mentions that Syria is the only nation where the Alawites religious sect has a nation state.
These rebels are one more version of the Sunni ISIS types wanting to make a extremist Sunni caliphate.
So Assad is fighting against religious genocide of the Alawities people at the hands of another Sunni caliphate group.
Assad is Not the hero anyone wanted, but ISIS showed what happens when these Sunni movements wins territory and control.
