    the planet is a metaphor for death-Kirstens character is afraid of dying, that's why she is depressed-the others are normal and don't go around thinking of death all of the time

      I don't think that's the case at all, she's depressed and depressed people don't care for life, that's why she's so derailed in normal life and she becomes calm & collected once disaster is looming

      Kirsten isn't scared of dying, her sister is. Kirsten is depression, Charlotte is anxiety and panic.
