- The Divine Liturgy of the Armenian Church was filmed in 1992 with the blessings of His Holiness Vasken I, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians.
Produced and directed by Elenora A. Ordjanian.
Funded by Nikit and Eleanora Ordjanian.
The Divine Liturgy was filmed at the Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs, New York City.

I am Catholic but honestly I think the Armenians, whether they be Oriental Orthodox, or in communion with the Armenian-Catholic Eastern Church, have the best aesthetics. Beautiful churches, artwork, vestments, altars, etc.

We in Worcester were the first parish in the USA to have his as our priest. I believe he came here since 1974

The Armenian Apostolic Church is not just a separate Christian sect, though. It is part of the Oriental Orthodox Communion (along with Copts, Ethiopians, Syrians, etc.).

@Eremias Ranwolf I sit outside more than my share of Roman Catholic masses, being a Protestant hired to provide music. This is much more stately than the modern Roman mass. As you say, it bears similarities to the tridentine rite. I have a passing familiarity with the Slavonic version of the Holy Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, so I can see how the Armenian liturgy differs. it's fascinating to see so many Western elements in an Eastern Liturgy. I knew some Oriental Orthodox clerics wear Western mitres, but the Western crozier was a surprise, as was the use of an organ.
They forget that we are not only Catholics, but Christians.

Yeah, I kind of wish we could throw out some of these Latin influences and go back to our medieval tradition. I don't like the pipe Oregon and I don't like the western inspired investments. If you heard the Armenian style of chanting that is more traditional and preserved by monks in some isolated monasteries, you will find that it sounds much more oriental in nature, somewhere between Syriac and Byzantine shant.
The Oriental Orthodox have always taught that our Lord was true man and true God. We did not reject Chalcedon because we denied Christ's humanity. Rather, we rejected Chalcedon because we thought it was semi-Nestorian.
Let us pray that one day we can recognize that the Oriental Orthodox are not semi-Eutychians and the Chalcedonians are not semi-Nestorians.
Hello, Search4. In the Armenian tradition, instead of the screen of the Byzantine or Greek tradition, there are two veils or curtains that are used. One heavier, the other sheer. They are pulled around the altar or across the sanctuary at different point of the Liturgy. I do love the tradition of the iconostatis, and have seen some very beautiful ones.
I met the catholicos and he said he really liked my name (the armenian version of it).. I was really little though :)

Thank you for this beautiful video. I visited the birthplace of Jesus at Bethlehem and there was an Armenian Mass but we didn't stay to see it. I have attended Ukrainian Catholic Divine liturgies and also Melkite (Greek). They are all beautiful. I now attend the SSPX and return to the Mass of my youth---the Roman Mass. But all are Catholic except those of the Orthodox, which are usually valid, and the Novus Ordo which comes from heresy and leads to heresy and was rejected by many in the East. (But why are women allowed in the sanctuary contrary to the teaching of St. Paul?)

Yes. The Armenian Church is Oriental Orthodox. The split between Oriental Orthodoxy and the rest of Christianity took place due to the events of Chalcedon in 451.

Classical Armenian is not that difficult. Study the liturgy. Best way? Join the choir. You'll learn very quickly what is being said back and before, between altar and congregation.

Some of the liturgical actions and rubrics clearly have been Romanized over time.
As a convert to the Coptic Orthodox Church, I've become accustomed to the Coptic Mass, thus, the Armenian Mass is strikingly different. The Armenian Mass reminds me of the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) of the Roman Catholic Church.

For your information, most Orthodox churches are in communion with each other, thus forming one church. I am Orthodox (converted) and just recently I guided Roman priests and bishops trough our monastry. I love all Christians, also protestants! We ARE in partial communion with Romans. We only have some problems with some theological views of you. If you are in the area of St. Ephrem monastry in the netherlands I would love to explain and show you evreything.

I view the Assyrian, Oriental and Eastern Orthodox Catholic Christian Churches as being sister Churches in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.
I am a Roman Catholic Christian.
I think of the Eastern Christians as brethren who are, on paper, separated canonically, but who are de facto part of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic orthodox Christian Church. They are particular Churches whose canonical situation is sadly irregular, so intercommunion, for the most part, does not exist.
But I believe they are legitimate Churches of God, with Apostolic Succession, valid Clergymen, valid Sacraments/Mysteries, and holy Liturgies, Devotions and spirituality, and orthodox doctrine.
And in fact this is the official view of the Catholic Church with regard to the separated Eastern Churches.
Lastly, if you read the documents from the Phanar representing the highest authority in Eastern Orthodoxy and the Pope of Alexandria representing the highest authority in Oriental Orthodoxy, it is clear the Orthodox view the Catholics as sister Churches with true Apostolic Succession, clergy, and Sacraments.
The animosity and accusations of heresy come from uneducated and overly zealous converts who haven't read the documents of intereligious and ecumenical dialogues of their own Churches.
Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox are not in communion. TBH alot of Eastern Orthodox views on Oriental Orthodox is kinda downright disrespectful and wrong

Yes, there is an Armenian Catholic Church. One example is the Mekhitarist Order, which has a long and rich history in Venice.

The Armenian used is classical Armenian. The Armenian bible was translated in classical Armenian in year 410 AD. At that time the language was about 6000 year old but that version was about 2000 year old at that time. So the language is 4000 year old Armenian. No one speaks it today, except a few eggheads, but we all understand it.
The Armenian Church uses Unleavened Bread from the 5th century, while the Church of Rome adopted this tradition at early 11th.
As a Catholic considering to convert to Orthodoxy I have a question. As some people point out the Armenian church is far more of an ethnic church compared to other ones. But I wanted to ask, is there any significant group of non-Armenian converts (Latinos, Arabs, African American, etc..) in the congregations, especially in places like California? Are people of Armenian ethnicity the only ones to belong in it, because from an outside perspective it seems so.
The Armenian ladies society is mostly foreign wives of Armenian men. You also have a few Husbands of Armenian women. Anyone is welcome. There is no door monitor checking for Armenianess. The quires are great, and the food is just divine. The burning of incense adds an incredible ambiance.
Armenian church (like with other oriental churches exlcuding ehtiopia and eritrea) are on friendly terms with both eastern orthodox and roman catholicism. They are sought of the centre ground between the two

Both of the Armenian Catholicos' celebrated a Divine Liturgy in the Roman Catholic Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, and Pope Francis celebrated a Catholic Mass at an Armenian Church on an Armenian altar after declaring the Armenian St. Gregory of Narek a Doctor of the Catholic Church.
And the Pope and Catholicos' both referred to each other as sister Churches while celebrating Liturgies at each others altars.
Those who fight against dialogue and reconciliation of the holy Churches of God are, in fact, fighting against Christ himself who desires us all to be One, even as He and the Father are One.
Except there can be no plurality of Churches, there is only one Church founded by Jesus Christ for our salvation, namely the Catholic Church. She alone is the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, all other Christian "churches" are heretical, schismatic, false religions. The Fourth Lateran Council restates the Catholic dogma that "There is, then, one universal Church of the faithful (una . . . fidelium universalis ecclesia), outside of which no one at all is saved (extra quam nullus omnino salvatur)."
Neck Squad Everyone has an obligation to belong explicitly to the Catholic Church, and those who are aware of this obligation (or are culpably ignorant) will have to answer for their rejection of God if they do not convert.
However, those who are ignorant through no fault of their own are not held culpable for THIS sin (though they may have many others, possibly including grave ones). People of this category who belong to a schismatic church with valid sacraments are probably in a much better/safer position for salvation than many other people are. Salvation outside the visible and legal boundaries of the Catholic Church is not impossible, even if it is difficult.

Confirmed into the Church three yrs ago. But I am studying Orthodoxy & reading many books. I love the Coptic, Armenian, and Syrian Orthodox churches, which I understand to be Oriental. Hard to follow sometimes. Almost another split, as in 1054 and the Protestant Reformation. This happened at Chalcedon???
I don't know where you are at now, 7 years later, but yes, these are Oriental Orthodox. It is all a very confusing history involving the political status of Alexandria and Constantinople in the 5th century Roman Empire, and it is quite hard to give a straight answer. In essence, our churches reject the Chalcedonian formula which divided Christ into two natures, one human and one divine, but we claim that such language is deceiving and that Christ is both human and divine, but inseparable. In my opinion, when studying the doctrines of Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Oriental Orthodoxy, all reach the exact same conclusions regarding Christ's will, Christ's energies, the Eucharist, and so on, so I have personally reached the conclusion that all believe essentially the same, but use different terminology.

The Catholic church, in wisdom, has always given latitude to local customs, esp. the oriental Rites, which differ only in manner of expression to the Latin Rite. The Catholic Church, many people are surprised to find, has 22 Rites...the Latin (Roman) Rite dominates but there are many other charisms, some kept as part of welcoming back groups of people who left under various schisms and disputes e.g. Ruthenians and the Ukrainians
The celebrant is a bishop, right? That sort of vestment would suggest a bishop in the Catholic Church, but since this is Armenian Apostolic and therefore NOT Catholic, I cannot be sure.

The Armenian Rite I know that is equal to the Byzantine rite, and yet this liturgy seem very Latinized.
This is traditional Armenian Orthodox mass. The Armenian Catholic church performs the same mass.
This is not treu. However it is treu that Armenia adopted christianity as state religion first in the world, but the armenian orthodox church is not the first church. the first church out of Jeruzalem is the Syriac Orthodox church founded in 37 A.D by the apostle Peter.

Eastern =/= Byzantine. There are certain similarities between Armenian and Roman Traditions (Shape of Miter, use of unleavened bread), possibly there is some Latin influence, but there are many more similarities to the Syriac Tradition, as well as many uniquely Armenian features.
The sign of the cross is Orthodox. Also the hymns are like Orthodox. Very similar in Greek
this may offer a connection to Abdulhamid II but some claim it is earlier and toward one of the most famous of mosques who also married Altan Orda or in their ancestors such women

it is not true, there were not any churches before 301 AD because the chrisianity was founded in 301 AD adopting by the Armenians and the first church was builded in Armenia, i think the first was builded in the city of Van(actually occupied by turks), the church was of the Saint Gregorio the ILLUMINATOR. Or it was another church but it was builded in Armenia, and second the first church cant be builded in another country because the world of the christianity starts in Armenia

Well that's not very universal if the true Church is restricted to the East. And the Latins aren't like the rest of us, but they never were. Once the empire split they were alone in the western world. I think there's something to be said for them being the sole patriarch yet has influenced the entire western world in a way we haven't in the east with 4 patriarchs
Unfortunately, you are wrong. As an Orthodox you should know that with the many national orthodox churches around the world and with eparchies (dioceses) in the US, Canada and elsewhere
All too often, the evangelism of the gospel is less to do with saving others, and more to do with stroking one's own ego. If one is to preach, make sure it is for the right reasons. The ancient ethnic churches allow people to come to them, rather than going after converts in a crass manner.

Armenian church was very active in evangelizing others. The Serbian church, the Russian church, The Caucasian Albanians and the Tatars and the Gypsies all were Armenian endeavors. However, with Islamic domination, evangelizing became a death sentence. So it stopped.
Catholic means Catholicos or Unity or Divine, so Ortodox people doesnt recogonize Roman church as Catholic one. We dont call a Devil as a Devil, we just say Pope and we all know what that mean. And answer me do you know that Pope blessed genocide over Serbs(Ortodox Christians) in world war 2 ?

But you have a duty as Christians to preach the gospel. That was the great commission given by Christ.

The Armenian Catholic Apostolic Church (otherwise known as the Armenian illuminated church) is in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Differences are: Parish priests are married and the confession is public. (the deacon reads all manner of sins and the penitents, gathered around him plead for forgiveness). No details.
What nonsense do you speak? Christianity was founded in 301 AD? So Christianity started 301 years after CHRIST our Lord died? Christianity started at 0-33 the years our LORD lived in. at 37 AD the apostles started spreading the word. So christianity was not founded after 300 years since our LORD died. Are you a mad man?

@monus782 Only the Catholic Church is universal, and has Eastern rites like this too. Eastern Orthodox are not universal, and refuse to be in communion with the universal church. Too phyletic (tribal). A Catholic who becomes Orthodox is always 2nd class, but an Orthodox or Protestant who becomes Catholic is a full member.

If liturgy is "the work of the people" why doesn't the congregation participate? Everything is done by clergy and choir. Why have a congregation?
I mean the congregation could say the responses but the liturgy isn't defined as "the work of the people" but rather "the work FOR the people".

Actually, the congregation can sing along with the clergy. Traditionally that's how we did it. Most people just don't bother to learn the liturgy.
Why they not studying the Bible? what a waist for hours goes divine liturgy and people seating watching show and falling sleep?.
I used to think like this for 30 years until I realized one day that the same people that fall asleep have no depth in them and have not grasped the beauty of what they are experiencing. As for studying the bible, that is what we should do nonetheless however a lot of unguided souls study it and come to wrong conclusions with each one being right in his own eyes.
