The subtext is rich in this episode. Notice how Hotch gives in to Prentiss, and even when he's trying to reprimand her, he can't bring himself to be truly harsh. Great ep!
The way she said “but he was important to me.” 😭 she loved him so much.

I know this is about the wonderful Hotch/Emily subtext, but I love how Rossi goes to bat for her in this episode!
Seriously, I really like Hotch/Emily but Hotch really let her down in this ep. Rossi was there for her.

Definitely! Rossi started out as a loner who didn't like working with the team, but he's become a sassy uncle who's got your back.
Reid trying to solve a murder case from his past? Rossi and Morgan are there.
Prentiss accuses a priest of murder via exorcism? Rossi's there to help investigate.
Hotch needs a babysitter for Jack at 5am? Rossi's got you.

i like how Em enters Hotch's office in the beginning, like a shy little girl, who does not know what she is going to say.
Penelope seemed so crushed that she couldn’t comfort Emily. Love that Emily confides in Rossi about Matthew, her account made me cry. When she tells/asks Hotch about the situation , at the start, I think he’s compassionate enough ( I’m sorry/take some personal time if you need to/we’ll help investigate if we can).
After watching this for the 100 times I can say I hate the writers for not putting them together! I ship them sooooo hard! For god sakes
Demonology is my favorite episode! The subtext was clear to me too. If it was any other character who like accused a guy with diplomatic immunity of murder, Hotch would've yelled at them very loudly. But no, not at Prentiss :)))))

I've loved this show since it first came out on TV. Hotch has always been my favorite character, too. This is one of my favorite episodes and I never noticed the subtext between Emily and Hotch until now. I believe I read somewhere that either one of the writers or one of the producers of Criminal Minds said that she believed Aaron and Emily were meant for each other in "another time."
I didn't even like Paget's character, Emily, until I started rewatching the show from season one, episode one a few months ago. I'm now on season eight. :) I've always loved Thomas Gibson's character, Aaron, and not just because I have a huge crush on him/he reminds me of my husband. LOL!

I can't stand the idiots who don't notice the Gideon never had to deal with Strauss or the director, never did the hiring and firing, never wore a business suit . Hotch was always the Unit Chief. He was asked to assess Jason Gideon . But they still think Gideon was in charge . He was the Senior Agent, but Hotch was the boss . He may have been quiet, but it was always his team .
Great outside the box episode. Not just another person with a twisted past but someone with political connections doing what he believed was right (the priest genuinely believed these people were possessed by a demon) not to mention they hinted that he may have been right, great stuff
i ship hotch & emily SO FREAKING MUCH!! ..but am i the only one who noticed the way hotch would look at elle in season 1?? but still, i completely ship hotch & prentiss
I ship Hotch and Prentiss the same amount as I ship Morgan and Garcia...only difference is Morgan (last I checked) was married. Hotch meanwhile is a widower...(I think that's the right term?)

I have never understood fans who ship Hotch and Prentiss. They never gave off that vibe for me.
That scene between Hotch and Rossi didn't ring true. Hotch came across like he was worried about his own ass... "Hotch: This comes down on all of us. Rossi: I'm fine with that. You?" So we see Rossi say it without hesitation, while Hotch seems like he has to be talked into it. I haven't watched the show in years, but what I remembered was that Hotch always had their backs. Here, it seems, not so much. I didn't watch this whole episode, so I may have missed something. Or maybe I'm thinking of Hotch in later seasons....
Late reply, but.. Idk, I see it more as him warning Rossi. He already made clear his ass was on the line ("the statedeparment is all over my ass"). At least, that's what I choose to interpret it as, it's more in character for Hotch.
Or maybe you're forgetting that Hotch was the Unit Chief and it would all come down hardest- and first- on him, not Rossi. Hotch's office was at the top of the stairs, not Rossi's, not Gideon's. Just like they didn't have to deal with Strauss directly, or do any hiring or firing.
@mmzaeCM me too, he barely calls her Emily. He always calls her Preniss, instead of Prentiss.

That would be a pretty common story for a vast number of people in all reality. Anything that doesn't fit their own belief system is seen as a threat because they have dehumanised people whether they realise it or not. Some religions are very, very strict. It's deep rooted. Often appearing cold and distanced. Clinical even. It would really fuck up a child or young adult living in such an environment. It would be as if living in another era.
My hope is that Hotch returns at the end to marry Emily.

@@nathankrush3289 it is a great show for sure. I used to enjoy watching it.. I just don't watch much TV anymore.. but at least there are DVD box sets.
@@nowankersallowed2115 It changed the way I looked at crime dramas. They used to always be about happy endings, forensics, and co- workers who only felt like co- workers. This show flipped the script, and like " The X- Files", you never knew what any show would be about or where it'd take place. And Hotch. I don't know where to start. Seasons 10 and 11-his last full ones- were amazing. That's right, seasons 10 and 11. How many shows can you honestly say that about? Watch him take down the director of the NSA!
