It was in context of song writers/lyrics I believe. 12 years ago, my senior English teacher had us do this. Then, the next day, he had our songs’ lyrics on a PowerPoint so we can look at the structure of it and some other things. It was really cool. I will always remember that moment 🥰🥰

So while Rihanna is a fantastic singer and extremely accomplished, I wouldn't put her in the top 50 song writers (same thing as Ed "you can only go so far lyrically when writing a top 20 hit"). So his comment was probably condescension about thinking Rihanna is a good song writer. Just my interpretation.
