Hi Dave, usually I watch your reactions to VoicePlay and Geoff but this time I stumbled upon this video about the Berlin Wall. More than once during the video I was crying because I remember like it was yesterday when the Wall came down! It was wild and wonderful! Growing up in Western Germany what happened in Eastern Germany was always present. We had relatives who lived in the western part of Berlin. There you could not not notice the Wall because it went right down the middle of the city. For me as a child it was scary because you could see the guards with the machine guns patrolling the area.
My friend and co worker at the daycare that I am working now grew up in Eastern Germany and she is always telling us stories about how she grew up over there. For example they also learned a second language: it was russian and when they went on vacation they were only allowed to vacation in Russia.
    Tough times 😢
    I’m glad it’s over!
Thank you for sharing this video! See you next time with VP again 😅

Hey Dave, Thank you for this vid.
I myself was born in West-Berlin (1968) and lived there until after the re-unification. It is one thing to learn those facts from history books, it's a completely different situation when you have to live with it. And in my teenage years I lived about 200 meters away from the "Berlin Wall". We heard the dogs, the shootings and the sirens going off at night. And if those noises stopped within four or five minutes you knew that someone was shot, maybe even killed.
But living in West-Berlin wasn't much easier. The Quadripartite Agreement (Agreement of seperating Germany into four different zones, one for each Victorious Power (Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union and the U.S.A.)) was set in 1971, and also was meant to regulate the way to and from West-Berlin´.
There were rules to be followed (e.g. people in West-Berlin had to always carry an ID card or passport with them (even kids aged 8 or older) or people weren't allowed to be in possession of knives with a fixed blade of more then ten centimeters (approx. 4 inches). Any breach of these rules could get you into military prisons.
Until the re-unification people in West-Berlin weren't allowed to have a regular ID card or passport, it was always temporarily and had to be renewed or extended every five years at the local police station. Not doing so could get you into prison as well.
There is one last thing (one he (The Fat Electrician) forgot to mention): When the wall was built, people from West-Berlin could not return home. They were stuck in the eastern part of the city (like nurses that worked the night shift, for example). Even if they had children there. Those people were the first to be ransomed, but it took several years to come to this agreement. Thousands of families were torn apart.
My father had fled the GDR (German Democratic Republic - hehehe) on August 9, 1961. Only four days before the Wall was built. In their eyes he was a criminal. His parents and siblings were all on the East-side. We (the whole family in the western part) weren't allowed to visit them or use the "Transit", either by car or train, until 1976. When we wanted to leave West-Berlin for vacation we had to take a plane.
One last side note: As the Nazis surrendered, Berlin was completely occupied by the Soviet Army. The US Army had occupied Thuringia. As the power center of the Nazis was in Berlin the US Government traded Thuringia for the bigger part of Berlin. That is the only reason why there was a seperation of the city in the first place. A lot of former East-Germans still hate the people from West-Berlin as we had been allowed to live an 'easy life'.
And there is one correction: the people of the GDR were not fenced in and never let out again, as he stated it. They had the possibilty to travel, even if it only was into countries of the Eastern bloc. That is how thousands of East-German people were able to make it to the West-German embassy in Prague, climbing the fences to get onto West-German territory.
The riots started because the people wanted to be able to travel wherever they wanted to. About 80% of the people were happy where they were living at, and about 65% wanted to keep Socialism. They just wanted the freedom to go any place. After the Wall came down, approx.4% left the country. About 40% of the people that had fled moved back to the east to regain their property that was taken away from them after they had left the country.
If you would like to know more about this, just let me know
Hugs Rick (now living on Rugia - the most beautiful island in the Baltic Sea)

Honestly interesting information. It sucks that you had to go through that, but at least you were on the Western Side of the wall. I guess it could always be worse, huh? Anyway, thanks for the info. I didn't realize, for instance, that some people still wanted to live under the conditions that were imposed.

They wanted to live like that, because everyone had a job, prices were low, rent was low. After the re-unification this all changed for the worse. A lot of East-Germans (and also an number of West-Germans) wanted the Wall to be built back up again. And some still are struggling.... after almost 35 years... 🤓

Even "Atomic Blonde," set around the time the Berlin Wall came down. "The Lives of Others" is a superb film giving you a feel for what it was like living in East Germany under constant surveillance.

That is not the only time someone escaped the USSR in a handmade hot air balloon. I remember reading about at least one other case and I know it is different because they landed in Finland.
At the very beginning they built the wall between apartment buildings that were on the border and people lowered themselves from windows in the buildings on sheets to escape.

To help you with it, Deutschmark is the currency that the Allies came up with for Germany after the USSR totally devalued the original currency they had by printing a crapload of it. Deutsch means German, in, well, German. They actually call their country Deutschland.
Also, love your stuff Dave. I'm perfectly happy with people just watching the video and then talking afterwards, so the ability to add anything during is fine for me. And I agree with some of the other comments, watching people learning things is interesting and important.

  • @germankitty
    @germankitty 9 місяців тому

My first-grade teacher was one of the people escaping East Germany via that hot-air balloon. Two years later, she was once more gainfully employed -- and a good teacher, too. There's a permanent exhibition in Berlin, at "Checkpoint Charlie", the one place where you could legally cross over from East Berlin into the American-controlled sector of West Berlin -- simply called "Museum at Checkpoint Charlie". It was shocking to see heavily-armed soldiers and tanks from both sides guarding and patrolling a fairly normal-looking street ... there also were signs everywhere, "you're leaving the French/British/American sector" when you came close to the wall, with guard towers and viewing platforms visitors in the western part could climb and look into East Berlin.
The Russians integrated houses into the wall, just bricking up the windows looking East.
Public transport lines of the subway would have to pass below nooks and crannies that above-ground would be East Berlin territory; the trains would slow down to walking speed especially when passing through now-deserted and abandoned stations. At all times, there would be heavily-armed two-man patrols in defensive gear, an attack dog at their side, watching whether someone would try to get off the trains -- or worse, climb them somehow in order to escape.
There also was one regular train line connecting West and East Berlin, going between just two fixed stations -- East Germans could use it if they had a legitimate, documented reason to visit the West, usually on business. West Germans could use it carrying a passport and on arrival in East Germany get a day visa, for business, tourism or sometimes meeting relatives. They were compelled to exchange money, around 10 Deutschmarks per person, at a 1:1 exchange rate ... when the official rate was 1:4, that is, 10DM for 40 East Mark. An easy way for the regime to get hard currency. Oh, and you HAD to spend the money; taking it into West Berlin was illegal, and they wouldn't change it back. (And if you spent more than those 10 marks, you could use Western money -- again for a 1:1 exchange rate. Prices were low by comparison, but it was still akin to highway robbery.

I was fortunate (and honored) to serve under President Reagan as a Senior NCO in the US Army, stationed in the occupied city of West Berlin from 1981 to 1984. The Cold War was at its peak then, mostly as a clear confrontation between NATO (commercial west) and the Warsaw Pact (communist east). President Reagan made his first official visit to West Berlin in June of 1982 and spoke initially to those of us in the Allied military forces stationed there. This was long before his famous ‘Wall’ speech.
Membership in NATO was formed from western allies voluntarily; France was excluded because they chose not to join at that time. Membership in Warsaw Pact was formed, and enforced by Soviet forces, in countries they invaded during World War II. Any country that tried to leave the Warsaw Pact because of freedom movements (East Germany (DDR) / Hungary / Czechoslovakia) faced violent suppression by the Soviet forces. The members of the Warsaw Pact were not the comrades as the PR often claim. It appeared similar events would happen in Poland during the 1980’s.
We were able to see the evils of communism everyday in the DDR. Oftentimes in areas just across the street or closer. Escape attempts and bloody retribution were pretty common occurrences with blatant and often loud results. Everyone on that side suffered in some form or other from food shortages to constant brutality.
I was attached to the Military Intelligence (MI) Detachment as an interrogator tasked with interviewing defectors (Border Guard / Military) and refugees (civilians) from all of the various Warsaw Pact countries. They were fleeing similar oppression with many vivid stories of their own. We had an almost constant flow during my time there. We even had 4 East German Border Guards who defected through various routes.
Everyone wanted American cigarettes because the local brands were very harsh. The US Forces Command had directed soldiers could only pass 10 cigarettes a month to local citizens as we wished. We were authorized to purchase two cartons (21 cigarettes each) monthly. I became very popular at a a local disco when I donated a whole carton of cigarettes before learning about the ‘10 cigs limit’. My boss was not happy about that because there were trafficking rules then: arrest and suspension.
    Regards

Cough cough clears throat North Korea, yeah it may look good on paper, but like a child's drawing of a roller coaster, it does not work in real life, communism will always fail due to human machinations and power hungry inequality used by opportunistic leaders. The old saying, " power corrupts , and absolute power corrupts absolutely," (Lord Action) comes into play. I have always loved history, but took an even higher interest in history because so many have demonstrated an urge to attempt to erase and cover up the history that has occurred, " those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it."( Winston Churchill) has renewed my interest. There are many historic occurrences that I would prefer not to experience, like the crusades, slavery, civil war, holocausts, etc. Tearing down statues, and removing sections from the history books scared me this was to occur. As for the wall, I wondered why not use the sewers, they were once connected? I did wonder about the hot air balloon, if you go at night, there is a good chance you can rise out of gun range before they notice you, then travel at will, it makes sense to me. Another option would be to emulate the medieval siege tactic of tunneling under ground to the bottom of the wall, then removing enough support to cause the wall to collapse, allowing people to attempt tp flee in the guards confusion. Or use Escobar's tactic, just keep tunneling and support the tunneling until you can come out where you wish to be. Ok, that answers that lol. " Will of the people",? Can we say hypocrisy? Mass murder, or ransom, or work crew I am guessing. Ok, yeah. Historically, there have been very deadly consequences for getting on the wrong side of governments and monarchies, up to torture and execution on charges of treason, a truly horrible and extensive execution, usually public to make an example to the rest of the people. Such as being hung, drawn, and quartered before disemboweled, decapitated, and having your head displayed on a pike...Yeah, as revolutions go, it was fairly bloodless and easy, most are very violent. Even the American government got involved, the famous line from President Reagan," Mr. Gorbachev, tear down down that wall!' was talking about dismantling the Berlin wall.

It’s especially important to learn, to listen, to this today. Post Tucker Putin. Which I agree with in every way, yet; lest we forget, what Russia, what Putin, really is.

Why you deprive your children of the same joy of having a dog which you so much enjoyed when you were young? Lovin' your reactions, BTW! Please don't take the first sentence to mean I am negative at you.

It’s not the time or place for a dog right now. There are other, greater responsibility’s.

Solid. I understand. And you seem like you'd be a great dad. For me, having a dog was so important as other things in my childhood were not great. So, it just sort of hit that button for me. I should not have laid that on you.

There is no wrong done when introducing yourself and your audience to this information. The only people who would disagree are communists and who cares what they think?
FE has some excellent and hilarious content. Some of my favorites are his videos on Jake McNasty, Cassius Marcellus Clay (who, BTW, he named his son after), Dan Daly and Joe Medicine Crow. "Winter Soldier OD's on meth and becomes unkillable" is right up there as well.
Honestly, you can't go wrong with his channel.

Currently, the *capitalist* nation Israel, with the full support of the *capitalist* US, UK, Germany and France, are starving t0 de*th 2.2 million people in G-za. This has been going on for 3 months. The FAscisT Electrcian has not one word about this on his social media. This tells you everything you need to know about his honesty, integrity and character.

    • @Shalltear773
      @Shalltear773 5 місяців тому

no, it really doesn't considering he literally admitted none of these things are perfect and openly admitted not everything goes right under capitalism the moment he said it's flawed. just because he doesn't talk about one specific series of events on social media, that doesn't "tell you everything you need to know about his honesty, integrity and character". but you go ahead and continue judging someone you probably have never met and thus have zero grounds to judge them on besides social media of all things. your argument lost all merit the moment he admitted to capitalist stuff and how it's handled as being flawed and needs work. plus it's fucking war. you can literally blame both sides of it, especially Hamas for starting the damn conflict in the first place plus whatever war crimes BOTH sides may have committed by now. and even if food was an issue beforehand, Hamas starting a bloody conflict only led to a series of events that made it significantly worse. so again, don't blame just one side for the food issues Gaza is suffering from.
