  • Residents of Cairo’s iconic houseboats have been given days to evacuate before their homes are demolished to make way for tourist sites.
British-Egyptian author and filmmaker Omar Robert Hamilton spoke to MEE about his family’s memories living along the Nile, and why his home should be protected.

It's disheartening that people are loosing their homes for tourism purposes. That place should actually be left as is to inspire artists and tourists. In California, there are many beautiful and unique looking houseboats and I feel it adds to the beauty of the bay.

The government is saying their unsafe, and truth be told their not completely wrong. The golds gym boat on the Nile sank down years ago sinking many of the equipment along with it.

@@freepalestine7687 you are making them out to be monsters that are out to torture anybody they want in whatever way possible...I mean it's not like they did multiple initiatives to help their citizens like Haya Karima or the upper Egypt development project or the multiple low income housing projects that got ride of many of those unsafe slums for instance. So I would say that they are very concerned about the safety of their citizens.

The people in this video are so biased as always they always are, they are acting as if Cairo was a modern utopia before Sissi came into power, guess they missed the part where the city was crumbling and on its knees in 2013.

@@friendoftellus5741 from what I have noticed by reading all the news reports and watching all the interviews, is that almost all of those people have a second nationality and are well to do, or at the very least they've inherited those houseboats from their parents or grandparents who are actually utilizing the system a privileged the upper class Egyptians and foreigners and exploited Egyptian farmers and the working class as a whole during the 1920s and 40s. It's about time that stain is washed and those people stop caring on the legacy of their ancestors, many of the houseboats owners (who in addition to their second citizenship also still hold Egyptian citizenship) said that they will leave the country if their houseboat is gone, is by all means good riddance.
