    That's a cool father and son project. Your son was very patient and interested. He'll have a great memory. Nowadays 90% of adults couldn't sit there for an hour because they have the attention span of a chipmunk.
    I would like to mention a few things:
    a) Don't clean your soldering tip after soldering. The solder is protecting the tip from oxidizing. When you clean it while it still hot it oxidizes while it's cooling down. Clean it before you start to work and tin it with fresh solder.
    b) You said the soldering paste is hard to press. It usually is because it's thick but with time it gets harder because the flux inside dries out. Soldering paste should be stored in a fridge and even then the suggested shelf life is six months. I didn't do any tests myself. You can revive it by mixing it up with with fresh flux. Soldering paste is made from microscopic solder balls and flux
    c) Try gel flux in a syringe. It's packed like the soldering paste. I like it much more than the flux in the tin and it's easier to use and clean.

    Recently built a Ti S2+ with a single SFT40 in an SMO reflector driven by A 3v 5@ buck driver just a few days before seeing this tutorial.
    From my own personal experience, this video is a very good walkthrough introduction to assembling your own serviceable flashlight. Well done.

    This is the first video of yours I’ve seen. Showed up randomly on my feed. I just recently became interested in doing something like this. This is like the best instructional video I could have asked for. And I’m delighted that as a bonus witnessing how you interacted with your son, I thought to myself this is exactly the type of father I want to be. I sent this to my gf and she said “oh my god he explains things in detail exactly like you do!”

    Isn't it an other option, to leave out the aluminium spacer, the original pill and make a right sized pill from solid copper for better heat transfer and easier build? Or the threads are impossible to replicate?

    What's the purpose of the 0 ohm resistor that comes with that MCPCB? Seems like there is a spot for it but not sure when you'd use it.

    • @goodbyegalaxy
      @goodbyegalaxy Рік тому +1

      Never mind, here it is: This MCPCB is designed for parallel use only, so there are no jumpers or bridging required for most triple applications. To run all three secondary XQ-E LEDs, you must bridge the jumper pads.

    • @cheule

      Depending on the emitter you use, well over 1000 lumens. I recommend Nichia 519A or Luminus SST-20 4000K if you can’t source the 519A.

      I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m surprised mountain won’t ship internationally. Did you try to email them directly?

  • @yaronskp
    @yaronskp Рік тому

    I'm struggling to understand the motivation. It's more than 30 USD for the components alone plus 12 USD for the host and shipment costs, so 45-50 USD total. All that when there are great triple emitters ECD ready to use flashlights for less than 30 USD.

    • @cheule
      @cheule  Рік тому +2

      It’s a custom build. Meaning, h17f driver which is amazing and the exact emitter CCT and tint you want.
      It was never about money, it was about getting exactly what you want.

    Just got interested in flashlights, so I have a bit of a newbie question. Would this build, or something similar, work with Nichia UV LEDs? I need a UV light to find a refrigerant leak in my truck. I bought one of the S2+ UV lights, but it's kind of weak. Would tripling the number of emitters help at all?

    • @cheule
      @cheule  Рік тому +1

      I would use the single reflector that comes with the S2+ because the PMMA of the Carclo triple optic will block UV light. So a mule (no optic at all) or a reflector are your choices.
      If you go with the S2+ and reflector, you might want to pick up a driver that limits current to around 2A. I’m guessing here, but I know that most UV emitters will die if you give them 10A.
      You could also use a higher amperage driver and set the mode group to max out at 50% or something similar.
