To be fair - I've spent many years of my working life in the computer/networking industry, so I feel I had a bit of an advantage getting into consoles and games.
@@Food4Dogs i knew it! the way you speak and act your no amateur this work was way too professional you skills really shine through! amazing segment on the vita!
I remember when I first got my 64 GB memory card. I stalked Ebay for months and months until I finally found someone who just wanted to get rid of theirs for some quick cash they needed. Got it for around $63 USD, and I verified it was from Japan on the back. One of the best Vita days I ever had and its been serving me well ever since!
PSVita at 2am - dude, nice find there. I got my 64GB for $78 off amazon. I think they were just trying to get rid of them :( Also, I’m pretty sure the 64GB was only from Japan
This memory card issue was a huge nail in the Vita’s coffin... it made it so difficult recommending the console to friends. Good video with a more journalistic tone 😆
My first memory card came with my North American Assassin's Creed III Liberation bundle (white OLED VIta 1000) and it was only 4GB...I filled it up so quickly! Since then I've gotten more systems and memory cards for my collection but they were never even remotely as cheap as a simple micro SD card. One memory alternative I have had success with is to use my PS3 to back up games and save files (for both Vita and PSP). It's as simple as plugging in the data cable so long as you have your account on both systems, and it is very easy to upgrade the PS3 hard drive if need be. With the amount of digital Vita games I have I will never have a big enough memory card to store all of them on one system, but it's nice to know I have copies stored locally on my PS3 hard drive.
Oh, the AC Lib edition is beautiful! I believe it's the only time we got the crystal white Vita officially in the West. I bought a Japanese pre-owned crystal white a while ago. Yea .. 4GB sure doesn't go far! Using the PS3 for Vita file storage is *such* a boon! I use it all the time. I actually have a full backup of all my digital Vita install files on one of my PS3s (500GB HD!). I love the integration features with the PS3.
My Vita served my Megaten needs well with Persona 4 Golden. Even though I have it on Steam now and have dropped 150 hours into that I will always cherish the experience on the Vita. The system really deserved more support. Underrated
I completely agree with you that the proprietory memory card is what killed off the Vita from the get-go. The system was already remarkably expensive and not something you'd e purchasing on a whim but then you suddenly had to take into consideration that you needed a memory card as well. An for digital gamers especially, you wouldn't want a small one and suddenly this thing started to turn into quite an investment when they could have gotten the very same amount of memory on a much more future proof supported MicroSD card for a fraction of the cost. Especially with today's prices. I originally waited with buying my own Vita until Gravity Rush released. That was the game that sorta justified my purchase but i believe I also got Uncharted and Katamari for it as well as a 16GB memory card. Katamari which is a series I love did leave me with a bit of a sour taste in my mouth as the game tried to incorporate microtransactions held back content unless you were either willing to pay extra or grind for special pickups for days. I even got the short-lived 3G version which was probably more of a FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) decision on my end as I never made use of the 3G feature at all. From what I could understand, in the U.S, the 3G feature was also locked to AT&T or something but that's not something I can confirm but I remember when they announced that fact at E3 and the crowd just turned awfully silent with faints boos here and there. I did enjoy my Vita though. It was one amazing little system that sadly never got to show off its full potential and never really got the ball rolling. What is most impressive is more the fact of how long the community seemed to support it, with indie releases and several ports hitting the thing later in its life. 2 Things I always found a little annoying with the hardware though was the fact that it also had a proprietary charging slot instead of a standard one. Something that was at least addressed in the non-OLED revision and then the lack of a video-out function like on the PSP. I guess the PSTV addressed that problem though, which also marked the point where I eventually got myself a 64GB Memory card but something that felt really tone death with the PSTV was the fact that the system would prevent video capture with its HDCP restrictions, which was actually part one of the bigger reasons I wanted the thing. I've never understood the point of why you'd want to block video capturing from a console. I know they claim it's to prevent people from ripping movies from Netflix and the like but that never seemed to be an issue for Nintendo who has none of these restrictions and the PS4 would only have it when you were trying to use these streaming apps. But I'm rambling here. It was always kinda sad that we never got to see what could have been with the Vita beside the few bigger titles we saw during its first 2 years before it's slow death. I've always been fascinated by the prospect of seeing different timelines and see what might have been the future of the Vita, had it succeeded. For now, I'm still waiting for Limited Run Games' release of Papers, Please which is supposed to be the very last physical release for the Vita. I really enjoyed this video. It's always fun to see different points of view and angles to how people have experienced gaming history. I very much look forward to see more from you :) My apologies for writing half a novel here.
It may have been - nearly - half a novel 😁 but I enjoyed your ramblings very much, and in fact agree with everything you say. The lack of a Video Out port 😣 really hit us hard, I think, because it prevented so many people from capturing gameplay. We see nowadays how super important it is for new games to get wide exposure on UA-cam and Twitch. Due to the tricky technical issues involved (which I won't go into, I've been futzing around for over 2 years with this ...) only a few Vita UA-camrs were able to provide us with coverage. However, at least one little bit of good news (I suppose) is that I now have the ability to capture footage and intend to make use of this on my channel. The Vita console is legacy - but the games are not. 😀
My goodness you know your stuff. I've actually learned few things myself from this and Ive thought I was a fan. Definitely subscribed to you now. I salute to you.
interesting little fact, both the vita 1000 and 2000 have the exact same amount of internal memory, it's just not accessible on the vita 1000! However you're able to use the internal memory on the 1000 when its modded. I wonder why sony chose to lock us out of the internal storage on the 1000. Great video!
That is indeed a very interesting tidbit. Thanks 👍 I can't think of a good reason for hiding it - I assume they wouldn't have been able to use that memory for extra graphics or performance power ..? 🤔
Food4Dogs I don’t believe so, as far as I am aware it just sits there dormant doing nothing sadly.. Once unlocked through modding it functions exactly the same as the vita 2000s internal memory however.
My first Vita was a 2nd hand Japanese white 2000 model I got from eBay about 3 months ago and it came with an 8GB memory card. It was $120AUD and luckily the console was in near new condition with no scratches on the face or sides and very minimal cosmetic scratches on the back. I was a Vita newbie and wanted it purely for modding purposes; and very quickly realised 8GB is not really enough for my needs. Less than a month later I was just browsing Facebook Marketplace and saw someone selling their European black 1004 model for $50AUD - it included a genuine charger, cable, USB car charger, Sony travel case, game case, and 4 games. I believe the seller uploaded the item seconds before I loaded FB Marketplace on my phone, and of course without hesitation I messaged the seller and told her I was coming to pick it up later that afternoon. The Vita was in excellent condition and came with a 16GB card! Recently I was able to sell the European Vita with all the accessories, games, and 8GB card for $225 on eBay. And on a whim I bought a 3G Vita with a 64GB card for $200AUD on FB Marketplace. Given that most 64GB cards I found on eBay were at least $150AUD, I thought that was a bit of a bargain; and soon I will be re-selling the 3G vita with a 16GB card and keeping the 64GB card for myself. I am very happy with my white Vita with 64GB and would recommend that you keep your eyes peeled on FB Marketplace because you may just be in luck and find that one person that don't know the true value of what they're selling.
Well, Kevin, you're quite the Vita entrepreneur! 😀 That is very impressive and really shows how keeping an eye out can bring results. Great tip there about looking out on FB Marketplace in particular - I hope those looking for a Vita and/or mem card read this.

Honestly sd2vita breathed new life into my PSVita, the only limitation now is the SD card capacity. You do need Custom firmware in order to use it but I see it as a necessary evil
The memory card was a pain point for me getting the Vita quite late. Mind you, I've hardly played the Vita... I'd love to get some recommendations for the best games. When it comes to the memory card though, I actually had trouble finding one at all! The stocks are definitely getting scarce. From memory I bought mine from eBay, and it cost a fortune. But I had purchased the original Vita model, and I simply couldn't do without a memory card.
Yea, knotty situation for sure about getting hold of mem cards. I recently purchased a pre-owned one from Japan; they're slightly cheaper, but not a whole lot either. I'll see how that works. There is also @BazaarbazaarCom - they recently posted they got in their last ever stock of mem cards. I think they're nearly gone. www.bazaar-bazaar.com/products/playstation-vita-memory-card-32gb As to recommendations, I think your best bet is asking on #Vitaisland and stating your preferred genres - I'm sure you'll get lots of good suggestions.
@@Food4Dogs, thank you for the detailed reply and the great tip. That's very much appreciated. I'll check out Vitaisland for sure! Have a good day, and stay safe.
Weird. I didn't realize the Vita didn't come with the 4 GB Memory Card. I preordered my Vita before they were released and got the Limited Edition case. Guess it came with the Memory Card too as I got that with my Vita.
You inspire me. I'm 37 years old and all the women I know look at me funny because I'm a gamer and my male gamer friends because I love the vita. My patients just don't like their doctor is a gamer and seem to lose trust in my judgement as a physician (although it has nothing to do with it). It's nice and refreshing to see gaming doesn't have an age tag. Please continue doing videos on the vita. On the memory card topic, I got the 64gb for my PS Tv for 99 dollars... Too expensive. Thankfully I got my PS Vita used from eBay with a memory card half that size for a fair price.
Hi Hannan, I'm really sorry you're getting such prejudiced response from your patients. I would queue for hours to have a doctor who's a real gamer! 😃 $99+ is the regular price currently for a 64 card. I know it's too expensive - but at least you're getting heaps storage.
It’s such an important topic. If the mem card concept would have considered other solutions, the vita could be way more successful imho. And i always thought it was a pity that the ps3 program for handling the content wasn’t ported to ps4. The bottleneck of the vita cards also might be that the memstick they used in the psp also was used in other sony products, but not the vita cards, so there of course where too few people buying them. On the other hand as far as i can say the cards are very high quality and like you i never trusted in chinese cards or third party cards. Maybe some day i have to 😢
Oh! Don't get me started on the Vita integration with PS3 and lack thereof with PS4! Another topic I could ramble on about for hours. 😄 Thanks for great comments. I don't know much about the Sony memory sticks, so that's an interesting point.
Britta Food4Dogs btw i had to laugh so hard at the part where you’re talking about the modded vita - i also expected some „very intelligent“ people to flood the comment section, but you where faster - great 👍 😆
You popped in my recommendations and I just had to sub! I can tell you have nothing but love for the console. My hats off to you I too love the silver Vita, isn’t it just beautiful!
Great insightful video, Britta. I never personally had an issue with memory cards, and just calculated them into the cost of owning the unit, but obviously a *lot* of people did. I'm still not entirely convinced that memory cards contributed to the Vita's troubles (I'd argue it was the lack of AAA-blockbuster stuff that really did it), but whatever the reason... at least we got to enjoy the thing :D
An analysis of the Vita's troubles and early demise is .. a veritable rabbit hole. So many factors came together and all contributed to its commercial failure. Lack of ongoing AAA support was definitely an important factor. I guess it's almost a miracle we got the Vita in the first place! 😄 As you say: let's keep on enjoying it.
dude, the memory cards killed the Vita. I actually ran out of space downloading game updates for 6 games on my 4GB memory card, and that memory card was 20 dollars I also hated the fact that the memory cards are tied to your PSN account. Even though the Vita is region free, PSN accounts are not. I had to keep 2 memory cards tied to a Hong Kong PSN account for Asian/JP games while the other tied to a US PSN account for US games. I had to format the Vita with the memory cards taken out when i want to switch from playing Asia released games to US released games, and vice versa.
In the US, there were two launch editions of the game. There was the Early Adopter edition that had a case, as well as an 8 gig memory card for US$349. The generally available bundle was $249, and IIRC had the 4 gig memory card. I got the 8 gig bundle, and bought the 32 gig memory card for $99 from Amazon. A few years later, I got a 64 gig card for $99 from amazon as well. I still use the 64 gig to this day in my primary vita 2000, and I use the 32 gig in my VitaTV, the 8 gig card is in my modded OLED vita. My Modded Vita 2000 uses a SD card adapter. The unmodded OLED model currently doesn't have a card, and I just move my 64 gig over whenever I want to use it.
Great video, thanks for reinforcing the purchase I made in 2018. I had started reading up on the Vita for a few months, learning the console/memory card prices when I found the following deal: $200 US for a Japanese import PS Vita Slim that came with a 64 GB memory card, a hard shell carrying case and AC: Chronicles. I jumped on it immediately and have never regretted it. I loved P4G, Odin Sphere and Tearaway and it's my favorite way to play PS1 games (and there are still so many RPGs for me to work through on that system).
Hi Chase and welcome! Absolutely wonderful purchase you made there. You did your homework before buying, and that's always a smart thing to do. After 2018, it became increasingly difficult to source a Vita in good condition, with extras, at that price. I will continue my Vita coverage, as I play through my extensive library.
Thanks and glad to have you on board. My channel is tiny, really, and not monetised, so I guess it's to be expected that the algorithm doesn't take notice of me. 😄 However, I *have* noticed that ever since I hit 1K subs, there seem to be more people finding me.
I bought my vita in 2015 when i was studying in UK, i specifically got a job to make money for it! I got a vita separately, and then i saw an amazon listing for Adventure mega pack and 10 game megapack (each of which were very cheap, had a lot of digital games and both of them contained 8gb card each). I knew that 8gb wasn't enough for me so i bought a 64gb one (it was 80 UK pounds), and both 8gb cards ended not being used at all, i kept them in my vita case(in case something happens to my 64gb card). In 2017 i picked up PSTV, and i picked up the second one in 2018 (for homebrew), both without memory cards. So i used those 8gb in each of them, they ended up being useful after all these years ;D Though i do believe storage was a big issue for the vita, i ultimately don't think that they are the reason for vita's lack of success. Because if you remember PSP was also using the memory stick Pro-duo cards, which was also the sony's proprietary card (albeit much cheaper but still more expensive than other solutions) which didn't became a standard all those years later. I think 2012-2015 was an era of blooming mobile games market. I remember everybody was gaming on their ipads and phones, nobody wanted a dedicated gaming handheld anymore. I think if vita was released today (along with nintendo switch) it would have a massive success, as i believe the demand for handhelds is slowly picking up again. You can't blame sony for battling piracy. Back in high-school days in 2009, all my friends had a PSP, and most of them had a custom firmware with pirated games. The PSP sold very well, though games didn't. I believe Vita got lack of support from AAA studios simply because of that. So i believe Vita was just released not at the right time.
You make some very good points there, thank you. I agree. It was a really inauspicious time for Sony to release a high-end handheld console with expensive memory cards. Nintendo has demonstrated that the demand for dedicated handheld gaming is definitely there.
Another great video Britta, in the UK the prices never really got reduced. Even in our 2nd hand shops the 64gb cards are £70 (about $90) but personally they are still as expensive as ebay. Personally I thought Sony were all about the profit initially in regards to memory cards as there wasn't much options on the market at the time but as time and technology has evolved it should of either reduced the price or looked at the other options available.
I completely agree that Sony *should* have looked at other options for memory, especially once SD card technology became better/faster and cheaper. But of course by then, the writing was on the wall and they had decided to drop the Vita. I still maintain that the piracy issue dominated their thinking, right from the start. This is btw well documented.
I have a 3g vita that I bought on eBay from a pawn shop that sold their stuff online with a 8gb memory card included. Bought it to play the digimon story cyber sleuth games on Singaporean cartridges. The system and card only cost $128 the games on the other hand.... 😇 (very expensive) it also came with the augmented reality cards
That was a great Vita buy, congrats! Yes, Vita games are rather expensive these days. They've been going up in price - I watch the market of course - for the last 18 months (depending on your region, there is some variation).
So glad to find someone who's so dedicated to this very underrated handheld, I wa lucky enough to find a clearance sale in a videogame store that gave memory cards for a fifth part of their actual price, of course i bought in bulk (2 8gb cards and 1 16gb) knowing how much harder they would be to find in the future
Touch my katamari is one of the few games that actually saved to the cartridge. That’s most likely why there is no memory card information on the box. I’m not sure why they have some games save to the cartridge though, since a vast majority of vita games save to the memory card.
True - but it's still confusing IMO, since other games that also save to cartridge (like Epic Mickey 2) have the "mem card required" notice on the case. I think the problem is that this feature was neither explained to the public nor consistently implemented. I've watched people discuss this over the years on forums etc. .. and nearly everyone seems to have a different experience with those saves! You can only scratch your head.
I had a PS Vita that came with a memory card in the US. It was released a week early and came with a case and a 4GB card. It was the cellular version. You could sign up with AT&T but I never did.
Danganronpa was the reason I fell in love with the PlayStation Vita. I remember back in 2014 really wanting a Vita but couldn't justify knowing the lack of a memory card included and the prices to buy one. Eventually I took the plunge, spent ALOT on an 8GB card, got the PS Vita 1000 crystal black model and a copy of Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc along with Persona 4 Golden. Then the rest was history, eventually got the 2000 model a year later, played more awesome titles like Killzone Mercenaries, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Steins Gate, Final Fantasy X Remastered, Tearaway, etc. Eventually once Sony deemed it a Legacy console, and Nintendo announced the Switch, I sold it thinking I was not going to ever play it again. I love the Switch too but I regretted selling Vita, fast forward to now and I recently found a great deal on eBay for a White 1000 model PS Vita with a 4GB card and 3 games for $130 US. Console was practically in new condition so I lucked out. Now I'm on a mission to re buy and play all the great Vita games I remember.
That's such a lovely story! I agree - the Switch and the Vita are two very different consoles. Oh, a white one. 👌 Being the OLED model, it's gotta be a Crystal White, right? Like the one in my very first unboxing video: ua-cam.com/video/l1x-j3mqa7c/v-deo.html That is a lovely one indeed. The *only* white model in the 1000 range. Good luck with buying/collecting Vita games, and do keep me updated what you play on your Vita. I run a "What are we playing?" community thread most weekends over on the Community Tab. 👵😀
Thats a bit sad to hear - i was just getting into the Vita and really wanted to buy one but now i have to reconsider/be careful to what to buy Thanks for the important insight information
Oh, that makes me sad too. 😩 Please don't give up! While it is difficult - and it definitely pays to be well-informed and aware of price issues - I do hear success stories most days on Twitter of people who found a pre-owned Vita with a memory card *included* in the sale price. They are out there - just patiently keep looking around. 🙂
@@Food4Dogs thank you I'll definitely keep my eyes open if I find something good on ebay or maybe even local sellers😊 looking forward to your next video!
The Vita is my favorite modern day handheld. With the memory cards you can actually save a ton of money. Purchase a large memory card and the games digitally there always cheaper than getting physical copies.
As someone who was a very naughty-boy during the PSP, this was my first impression when I saw the price of the memory cards. It's also why I didn't buy a Vita until they flopped.
Oh ma'am, you are such a peach! I hope you know how many of us are watching, impressed and have defaulted to you as their new Vita source because we want to show off your devotion to the world. Now we just need you to run retro ROMS on it and you'll be immortalized. (Jk, don't do that for us. We understand your commitment.)
Thank you as always for your informative content Britta!! I posted on Twitter that I have a PS Vita on the way in the post, and given how far away its shipping from me I wouldn't be surprised if it takes over a month to get here. I had no idea I needed to get a memory card separate (although looking back I have no idea why I assumed it would come with one in the first place lol) so now I have time to order a memory card as well! I guess it will be like watching a snail race to see which gets here first given everything going on... ^^'
Hey Pete, are you getting a model 1000 or 2000? Presumably coming from Japan. That mem card issue threw so many people .. honestly, what were they thinking at Sony? Hope you managed to order one at a reasonable price.
It sucks that game system memory is so much more expensive than "normal" memory. These prices are like when thumb drives use to only have 8GB or 16GB available and were super expensive. I wonder why gaming has a tendency to be "behind" and so expensive... Thank you for the video(s) you share! I never personally attempted to get the Vita. I think I had a PSP and was still a broke kid that couldn't expand on systems, or even games, yet.
I was fortunate enough to get an 8GB memory card with I purchased my used vita in 2014. This model 1 system was in its original box with manual and power supply. At the time it was very difficult to use the television for gaming having very small children in the home and I found the Vita and PSP to be an excellent solution. I did eventually buy a 64gb memory card from playasia as well since it seemed like the best thing to do for "future proofing" my system and most of the games I played (mainly rpgs) did require several blocks of memory to save the game.
This is also the reason why I chose to buy Samsung memory cards because they’re a lot cheaper and better quality as well. You can UA-cam how you can use other memory cards on UA-cam. It’s actually quite easy
I got two 64GB memory cards in February 2019 for 80 euros each from Playasia. I wish I bought a few more back then because they're now nearly 100 euros more! :O And here I thought they were expensive back then. I got very lucky when buying my first Vita. It was from a cash converter and I only paid 70 euros. It was a black PS Vita slim that came with a case and when I checked inside the slots after buying it there was a 32GB card and a Mortal Combat game inside! The only downside was that the back was a bit scratched and the charger cable was broken but I just use the one from my phone. Best buy I ever did. ^^ My second Vita (OLED) I bought from a German guy on Ebay for a 100 euros very recently. It was barely used and came with the original box (with all the paperwork, inserts and even the original receipt!) and he also threw in a starter pack new in the box, two games and an 8GB card. I also got a PS Vita Mega Pack last year from an electronic store that was selling off it's old gaming stock. It included an 8GB card and a download code for 10 games for only 25 euros.
You got those 64s at a good price back then! I remember paying a similar price for mine. They're like gold dust now. 😄 You have had a lucky hand with your purchases. 👍 I remember that Vita Mega Pack - I think I even mention it in the video - mine had a 16GB card and those Harry Potter and LotR game codes, all for 10 euros.
@@Food4Dogs Haha gold dust! Very accurate. My Mega Pack was a different one though; it included games like Wipeout and Little Big Planet. I tried finding the lego one you mentioned but I guess even all the unwanted stock is gone now. :p
I recently picked up a black oled Vita because it was a really good price and the console itself is in mint condition. The current memory prices surpass what I paid for it. It's a shame but there is a work around. You can purchase a vita cart micro sd adapter for 5.98 usd on Amazon. This requires you to hack the console and use a homebrew application that tells your Vita to use the cartridge as the memory.
I got a vita on launch day and a 16gb card with it. Eventually my wife got me a 32gb card. I feel like the more storage gamers have on their device the more likely they'll buy more games. I subbed and look forward to see more of your ps vita content as I not long ago modded my vita and I play it more now than I did in its hay day.
Interesting - do you remember which retailer you used for your launch Vita with the 16GB card? I think you're right in that we tend to get more games the more storage we have! 😁 Ha, I just look at my PS4 with attached 3TB storage hard drive ... smh. LOL I appreciate the sub. Unfortunately you're not listed in my subscriber list and I had no notification either. UA-cam is sadly a bit unreliable like that.
@@Food4Dogs It was Walmart. It's such a fun little system. I had a blast with it the first couple years, but put it away for several years. Only recently did I pick it back up when I learned about SD2Vita. Got a 128gb micro SD card for $20 on amazon. I wish the system had been more successful as I think Sony make really high quality devices and I read somewhere they said they aren't going to make another hand held system. A shame really. I have a psp slim which is also a great little handheld.
While what you said about the reasoning for the vita card pricing is spot on it doesn't change the fact it was a ludicrously foolish thing to do. Trying to eliminate piracy through a proprietary memory card is like trying to hammer a nail by driving a truck into it. You can't stop piracy, there are too many factors at play. It could be finding an exploit from a third partys software, leaks, etc. The only goal should be to make piracy difficult enough to deter the majority of people. The 3DS had sd and micro sd cards, it ran CFW before vita, yet it never impacted the success of the console. Sony failed to identify what was so wrong with the PSPs security. A PSP could be completely unlocked to do things like run custom code, run backups, overclock, and more with a process that took less than 1 min and was so simple a young child could do it. In business its always important to accurately assess a problem. The irony is they were so worried people wouldn't make games for the vita if it had the same security issues as the PSP that they overcorrected to the point that it became such a fiscal hindrance to mainstream adoption which led to so few units sold that developers didn't want to invest in making games for the platform. Don't misunderstand, I love my Vita. But it's crazy how avoidable its lack of success was.
Yes, precisely. I hopefully made it quite clear that I think it was foolish of them to ever assume they could prevent and beat piracy and hacking. As you say: the DS and 3DS flourished regardless. It takes commitment, and Sony failed spectacularly in that department. It's just infuriating that one of the best handheld consoles ever had to suffer such a fate.
i think that the variable sd card speeds was the reason for the proprietary memory cards however i think sony failed to mass produce the proprietary memory cards at the right time and memory capacity to reduce the price for their customers accordingly...
Yes! You're right - SD card technology just wasn't quite there yet in 1012. In fact, SpawnWave today did a video touching on this: ua-cam.com/video/d0MglU6_OB4/v-deo.html
I'm glad it's not just me I have 5 Vitas 2 x Black and a blue, red and white imports from Japan all OLED. The issue is Sony's need to try and standardise a format for their own financial greed, Betamax was a classic example, PSP duo stick cards were overpriced too but the pricing for Vita memory is what killed the system and it is a real shame because the Vita is an amazing piece of kit
The box you shared for the back at 18:40 has the small gray boxes with "1 Player," "5k KB Memory Required," "Touchscreen," and "Motion Sensor." At least in my experience with PSP games, this was almost always how the games told players the requirements. Is this gray bubble section what you were talking about, or literally having to read the whole small print? I see the 2nd to last bullet point, it says "Memory Card Required," also.
As far as I remember, I was talking there about the issue that many games could *not* be played off the cartridge but required extra memory. This was a problem for the Vita 1000 model which came without any internal memory, so you were forced to buy an expensive memory card. Many early Vita adopters were caught out by that, inserting a game cart and finding they were unable to play the game. The Vita 2000 model rectified that issue by having a 1GB internal memory, so people could get started and even keep a small number of games installed that way.
Those SD price cards are the reason alone people hack their vita's even if they are up to nothing malicious, you can't play games if you're out of room.
I bought my Vita in 2015, I had to specifically pick a Disney game bundle because it came with a 16 gb card. It was never enough, especially after hacking my console for emulators and such. But now with SD2VITA I've got a 128 gb card in it. It's a massive overkill, but I just like not to think about how much memory I need
I always wanted a Vita, but those Memory cards killed it for me. Soyny did it on purpose to reduce piracy but there was no reason to price them at 100$. So in the end it was all about money. Who would spend so much money on those when the 3DS used regulard MicroSD cards at 1/5th the price?
Soo to battle piracy they made a memory card that was so expensive to buy and to make that they lost what market they had with their previous console? (slaps forehead) My first vita i got had a 8gb and if i had to buy either a memory card or game i had to buy a game because the memory card was expensive. When they made the second model i was like "ok they might make it with a better storage and use a better storage system they learned from their mistakes." We know how that turned out. In the end the vita got hacked (i bought one with 120 gb sd card and IT IS GLORIOUS) This video was a nice trip through memory lane and its nice to see vita users and their experiences.
the homebrew community has thankfully come up with a solution to the ridiculous prices of the memory cards: make a microSD card adapter that sits in the game card slot, and enable usage through custom firmware. It's incredible, the adapter costs $5 and you can fit in any sized* microSD card to install games to. * i've only tested up to a 128gb card though there shouldn't be any reason to go up to a 256gb or even 512gb card
@@Food4Dogs yep! Again, it requires a modified Vita because this is obviously not supported by Sony, but it's incredibly simple to both modify a vita and use this adapter. If you're interested, you can check Google or UA-cam for "SD2VITA"
I think Sony missed an opportunity with how they handled the pricing on their memory cards, especially with the direction the console has moved toward being a primarily digital game platform in its later years. I agree with you that PSP piracy has to be the main reason for the situation. However, in Sony's place, I would have intentionally sold the memory cards at a loss in the expectation that I would make that money back and thensome with increased digital sales. I buy a lot of digital Vita games, but I won't lie, every single purchase I make on the Sony store comes with a little doubt in the back of my mind that says, "Ugh, I'd like to try this, but do I really want to use up precious space for it?" Without that constantly being a factor, they'd have a lot more of my money right now than they already do.
Is it possible to talk about Vita and the games? I'm from Finland so I'll be the snazziest, but I do have some questions. Everyone knows about the memorycard. It feels like the PSX and Ps2 had a different memory card.
Could I send a video to some e-mail? I have one thosr abcd e-mail. Just a video asking about games and Vita.. Never seen anyone who likes Vita as much as you do. That's nice! T: -Joni Robert Rantanen from Finland
Yes, of course we can talk Vita. My favourite subject. 😊 Those older console mem cards were indeed very different. The Vita memory card was in its time probably the most advanced - better than the SD cards available at the time.
Luckily I always stick with one game until reach 100% before move on to new games. So 8gb memory for my vita would be more than enough! 😁 Great video 🥰 enjoy listening it!
It is a big issue. But I know *many* people who picked up a secondhand Vita that had a mem card included. You do have to look around quite a bit - but they are there. Good luck!
I managed to grab several 16GB and 8GB cards like 3-4 years ago locally for very good price. Never had 32/64GB and as far as prices go I might never be able to get one. Not a big deal though - have more games than I need physically ;)
Hi Britta! I'm a new subscriber, and am intrigued by your love of the Vita. As someone who missed out, I'm wondering if it's worth picking the console up in 2020. I do have a PSVita TV that I picked up for super cheap a few years back so that I could experience Persona 4 Golden, but I love my Switch so much and am wondering if I should grab the actual Vita for some handheld fun?
Hi Lindsey, that question is almost impossible to answer. I would hesitate tbh. And that's me, a Vita nutcase with 8 of them. The only reason (considering that you have a PSTV) you would want/need a Vita is for one or several specific games that are exclusive to the Vita and that you feel you absolutely must play. Most games have been or are being ported to the Switch. Like all the Atelier games .. and now Idea Factory is bringing Neptunia games over. Mary Skelter has been ported to the Switch together with the second game. There are very few exclusives left that you can't get on *any* other platform. Most Vita games are now also available on PS4 - like Caligula Overdose for example, and Exist-Archive etc.
Vita memory card was Vitas downfall. but the hacking community made it for us possible to make 400-512 gb Memory cards Fun fact: The micro SD version in the same time as the Vita memory card was faster than sony´s card. It was even smaller so why make a new 4x more expencive card with less speed ?
Funny thing is people still pirate vita games especially since there were low runs of games so they shot themselves in the foot not only that they ended production early for a system that could have had a longer lifespan, 3ds is just now slowing down
There are now attachments you can get so that you can use Micro Memory Cards with the Vita. It's non-legit but it works and you can have huge storage capacity with them.
Gosh. I even mention it in the video and show that "attachment". I get a lot of people here who actually don't watch my videos - they 'just comment'. 🙄
The memory card issue is crap which is why I haven't bought a vita until last year. Grabbed an SD2VITA adapter and threw it in my vita you have to do a little bit of work to get it running but then you can get the games running without any hiccups.
Wow I didn't knew the psvita had a memory card, its normal for a company to make memory cards expensive, especially for video game companies like sony and nintendo the reason is sololy because of branding, for the switch it isn't as bad because every micro sd cards works on the switch
living in ecuador the biggest i could get was 16gb card, before homebrew became widely available I had to juggle my game erasing and redownloading every now and then, since I can only get digital game living on my small country through the ps store buying code for it on amazon.
I understand. Thank you for sharing. I always recommend to those with restricted mem card space that you can use a PC and with the Content Manager software easily and quickly copy/backup your game and save files to store on your computer, if you have access to one. That way you can manage what to keep on the men card for playing, and copy back a game to the Vita when needed.
i remember buying my first 32GB Vita card, eBay was offering like $30 credit for listing and selling something.. and i sold some game, got my coupon, and bought a 32GB card for around $25 after discounts :)
@@Food4Dogs yep I have heard that too so I didn’t want to risk spending so much on one.. besides I am a physical vita collector with hundreds of games, so most of my installs are quite small :)
@@mindscan420 I always enjoy talking with other Vita collectors. 😎 What kind of collection do you have? All North American releases (that's what a lot of people do)? Or a mix of genres and regions?
@@Food4Dogs been collecting since like 2015.. around 750 total I think, full North American set, all the English import exclusives, some cover variants and such, and a couple hundred Japanese games 😎
I love the vita, it's one of my favourite systems, but I wish Sony had supported it better instead of giving up on it so early. Also Sony went too far with some of their extreme choices for trying to stop piracy- and in the end they still couldnt stop it cause piracy still does exist on the vita. If the memory cards were cheaper or you could just use regular memory cards the system probably would have sold better. Ultimately these things like DRM and whatnot that try to stop piracy are often very consumer unfriendly and seem to hurt the company more than if they just released the game normally, and at the end of the day there just really isnt much that can be done about piracy, though that may be hard to accept and kinda frustrating.
@@Food4Dogs Thank you for the response britta.I bought an OLED model that is modded to use an SD card so I plan to snag alot of games for it before the store shuts down.I really wanna play uncharted that is the first game I will get without a doubt. Also I have a question!I have never truly tried any JRPG's out can you recommend one to someone looking to attempt one for the first time!Once again thank you for your time!-Braden
@@BTG-YT Hi Braden, Oh yes, Uncharted GA is a must-have, quite agree. Hmm, that's a tricky question about a starter JRPG. Could you tell me whether you think you might enjoy slower pace turn-based combat or rather have faster, action-oriented battles ? A lot would hinge on that.
@@Food4Dogs I have always been drawn to turn based combat because I’m younger and growing up we didn’t get any turn based combat games at least not very many.Plus turn based combat seems relaxing so that is most likely what I would prefer!
@@BTG-YT Hey, I had to rescue your message from the UA-cam Spam Bin - because of that typo where the full stop connects the words many and Plus. Just a heads-up (bc you don't want to land in the spam bin, I can't guarantee I can always get people out of there!) - UA-cam thinks anything like that (that forms a link) is code of a hyperlink. Also, any characters like the hash or the "at" symbol are considered "code" and relegated to the spam bin. OK, turn-based it is. I'll have a look through my games, see if any would suit. But ... off the top of my head: Persona 4 Golden! Really, you can't go wrong with that one. And it's a story that connects incredibly well with young people (High School and up). The combat is actually really straightforward and the game shows you which element an enemy is weak to. The only more complex aspect is the demon fusion. If you just do the basic ones, you should be fine. And always always use a guide - I highly recommend it in your situation. But I'll try and find some other JRPGs, so you have some options.
Hello, Do you have a list of recommended games for the Vita? Would love to get one but I was always under the assumption that it didn't have many games.
No - because no one list would suit most people. Everybody's list would be different, depending on their preferred genres and styles. The Vita has a library of approx. 300-350 titles in the West and with Japanese games a total approaching 1,500.
Not gonna lie, I bought a brand new one for $500 a month ago. I don’t know if I got ripped off with the price or not, but it has definitely been worth it. I definitely wasn’t gonna buy the crazy expensive official memory card though, so I just hacked mine and used a 128gb SD card instead.
I must admit I hacked the vita just to use SD2Vita....now I have 128GB SD card in...I also have 8GB Vita card but it is just to little. In Czech Republic there is no stock of new Vita cards and used ones are crazy expensive here.
Yes, I understand, in certain regions it is particularly difficult, both supplies and prices. What type of games do you play on your Vita? Do you download them from the Vita store?
@@Food4Dogs I am trying to buy them from store but I have some physical copies as well. I am all rounded player. I have Vita for month now :) so I am playing Persona 4 Golden, Wipeout 2048 and my favorite Tyrian 2000 but that is homebrew port of old clasics from PC
I bought a launch edition vita on the promise of playing my ps1 games. Regret selling it but now I have a Hatsune Miku Vita. I have a sd2 Vita in the main slot with a 64 gig. I decided to go digital with it. At one point I had 5 64 gig cards. They got stolen though
Stolen! 😲 Wow, a Hatsune Miku special edition Vita. The stuff of dreams! 😀 Very nice. You wouldn't believe how often I hear of people who sold their original Vita .. only to regret it and later buy another one. Then being totally surprised at the number of Vita (and PSP, PS1) games available.
@@Food4Dogs the left trigger stopped working as well and my warranty had expired. I may get a PlayStationTV if it becomes cheap again, however. You can hack it to allow some games it says it doesn't support since some only use touch as a minigame that isn't necessary to play. My other brother also got a PS4 so I play with him and use it for some of the vita ports like gravity rush (not as good as on the vita though). I do have a hacked 3DS and it is more than enough. There's nothing like busting out some rounds on Pocket Card Jockey (simple solitaire-like racing game)
@@hippopilot6750 I can confidently predict that the PSTV will NOT ever become cheap again. They finished production long ago, and there isn't enough supply to meet demand. You'll be very lucky if you find a secondhand one at a good price. I wish you luck. Yes, a number of games are set to not work with the PSTV bc of controls issues; however, there is a White List hack available to unlock all games, if you wish to mod the PSTV.
Such an informative video. I went with an SD2vita (There is a solution that uses the 3g card slot on the 3g vita 1k if you want to preserve game card functionality). I am a dirty dirty pirate though :[ yar har
Thanks for subscribing and welcome. I don't promote or encourage piracy. That's my personal position. We all make our decisions, and to each their own. I know it's a very popular solution, and I have no intention to start preaching - that's not my thing.
@@Food4Dogs Of course, I do own thousands and thousands of dollars in legitimate software. I would encourage anyone to purchase their games legitimately, because devs deserve your money (and to not buy USED games, because the used game market takes far more money from devs than piracy). Thank you for your prompt response!
ive never had much issues with the memory cards myself, i dont mind switching cards so i have a ton of 4GB ones lol, plus a few 8's and 2 16's!! bought a 16 just for phantasy star online.
The problem is that there were no alternative options for buying these propietary cards. Not even SanDisk ones like we had in the past with Sony Ericsson phones or PSP
I wish I could talk to my Grandma about how criminally underrated the Vita is 😔
To be fair - I've spent many years of my working life in the computer/networking industry, so I feel I had a bit of an advantage getting into consoles and games.

Also, I’m pretty sure the 64GB was only from Japan
Haha wow even you watch her. Cool!

I very much look forward to see more from you :)
My apologies for writing half a novel here.
Thanks, appreciate it!
interesting little fact, both the vita 1000 and 2000 have the exact same amount of internal memory, it's just not accessible on the vita 1000!
However you're able to use the internal memory on the 1000 when its modded. I wonder why sony chose to lock us out of the internal storage on the 1000.
Great video!
That is indeed a very interesting tidbit. Thanks 👍
I can't think of a good reason for hiding it - I assume they wouldn't have been able to use that memory for extra graphics or performance power ..?

Hi Hannan,
I'm really sorry you're getting such prejudiced response from your patients. I would queue for hours to have a doctor who's a real gamer! 😃
$99+ is the regular price currently for a 64 card.
Thanks for great comments. I don't know much about the Sony memory sticks, so that's an interesting point.
Britta Food4Dogs btw i had to laugh so hard at the part where you’re talking about the modded vita - i also expected some „very intelligent“ people to flood the comment section, but you where faster - great 👍 😆
I jumped into the vita early 2019 for a great price and pristine condition! 16gb card came with it. Very happy so far!
Awesome. You did it at the right moment; since then it's been getting more and more difficult.

I too love the silver Vita, isn’t it just beautiful!
Appreciate the sub.
I love all my Vitas - I shouldn't really have favourites .. but I confess the Silver is my favourite. 🤗
I actually ran out of space downloading game updates for 6 games on my 4GB memory card, and that memory card was 20 dollars
I also hated the fact that the memory cards are tied to your PSN account.
It might have been $279, but I remember it being well under $299 for the 4 gig bundle.

I had started reading up on the Vita for a few months, learning the console/memory card prices when I found the following deal: $200 US for a Japanese import PS Vita Slim that came with a 64 GB memory card, a hard shell carrying case and AC: Chronicles.
Greetings from Christchurch
Please watch my latest video about the "granny" thing.
Britta Food4Dogs Digimon story cyber sleuth was $100 on cartridge I think hackers memory was like $50.
Smart move! 😀
You can only scratch your head.
my god you are the sweetest person i ever had the pleasure of watching! such a professional work! instant subscribe!
Thanks, and welcome!
Great video. I believe the lack of affordable storage for this system destroyed the system. And Sony let it happen which is all the more upsetting.
Like the one in my very first unboxing video: ua-cam.com/video/l1x-j3mqa7c/v-deo.html
That is a lovely one indeed. The *only* white model in the 1000 range.
Good luck with buying/collecting Vita games, and do keep me updated what you play on your Vita. I run a "What are we playing?" community thread most weekends over on the Community Tab. 👵😀
Thats a bit sad to hear - i was just getting into the Vita and really wanted to buy one but now i have to reconsider/be careful to what to buy
Thanks for the important insight information
Oh, that makes me sad too. 😩
Please don't give up! While it is difficult - and it definitely pays to be well-informed and aware of price issues - I do hear success stories most days on Twitter of people who found a pre-owned Vita with a memory card *included* in the sale price. They are out there - just patiently keep looking around. 🙂
@@Food4Dogs thank you I'll definitely keep my eyes open if I find something good on ebay or maybe even local sellers😊
looking forward to your next video!
This is so hardcore!! The moded Vita is my favourite device right now, opens the library of PS1 and PSP plus Vita!
The Vita is my favorite modern day handheld. With the memory cards you can actually save a ton of money. Purchase a large memory card and the games digitally there always cheaper than getting physical copies.
Yep. A lot of people just couldn't see that.
@@Food4Dogs A 2000! And I don't know about reasonable....lol I did indeed import from Japan, but only because I'm picky about what color I like haha
I agree, the 64 card (while very expensive) is really worth it in the long run.
My second Vita (OLED) I bought from a German guy on Ebay for a 100 euros very recently.
You have had a lucky hand with your purchases. 👍
I remember that Vita Mega Pack - I think I even mention it in the video - mine had a 16GB card and those Harry Potter and LotR game codes, all for 10 euros.
@@Food4Dogs Haha gold dust! Very accurate.
My Mega Pack was a different one though; it included games like Wipeout and Little Big Planet. I tried finding the lego one you mentioned but I guess even all the unwanted stock is gone now. :p
@@pte_n0vember Trust me, you got the better deal! Lego games are all the same. But Wipeout and LBP are awesome quality games. 😀
I'm glad you got a Vita.
But there really is no need to rehash what I was talking about in the video.
Everybody knows about how to hack a Vita.
😁 Ha, I just look at my PS4 with attached 3TB storage hard drive ... smh. LOL
I appreciate the sub.
Thank you for this information! New PS Vita owner here. Subscribed.
I have finally got a ps vita 3g model after all this time! So far very happy with it.
Good to hear!
I still see a lot of brandnew MMC here in the Philippines, so true it is so expensive.
yeah, my first and only mmc is only 16gb - can't even contemplate buying 32, sobrang mahal.
i think that the variable sd card speeds was the reason for the proprietary memory cards however i think sony failed to mass produce the proprietary memory cards at the right time and memory capacity to reduce the price for their customers accordingly...
Yes! You're right - SD card technology just wasn't quite there yet in 1012.
In fact, SpawnWave today did a video touching on this:
ua-cam.com/video/d0MglU6_OB4/v-deo.html
I finally bought a Vita and I absolutely love it. Shame it didn't get the support it needed.
Hi Dragomir and welcome.
Great news, so glad you managed to get one. Good Vitas are gonna be like gold dust in a few years, I reckon.
Nice video! Vita gang ❤️ such a criminaly underrated console
Oh yes.
There Are Many of Us. 😊 Are you on Twitter #Vitaisland ?
@@Food4Dogs Got it. Thank you for the explanation.
A lot of people went that route, it's perfectly understandable.
I always wanted a Vita, but those Memory cards killed it for me. Soyny did it on purpose to reduce piracy but there was no reason to price them at 100$. So in the end it was all about money. Who would spend so much money on those when the 3DS used regulard MicroSD cards at 1/5th the price?
tbf you can get a ps vita micro sd to memory card adapter that works just like a memory card would for a fraction of the price. Same goes for psp too
Soo to battle piracy they made a memory card that was so expensive to buy and to make that they lost what market they had with their previous console? (slaps forehead) My first vita i got had a 8gb and if i had to buy either a memory card or game i had to buy a game because the memory card was expensive. When they made the second model i was like "ok they might make it with a better storage and use a better storage system they learned from their mistakes." We know how that turned out.
In the end the vita got hacked (i bought one with 120 gb sd card and IT IS GLORIOUS)
This video was a nice trip through memory lane and its nice to see vita users and their experiences.
Yep, you're absolutely right - Sony gets top prize for making nonsensical decisions with the Vita.
the homebrew community has thankfully come up with a solution to the ridiculous prices of the memory cards: make a microSD card adapter that sits in the game card slot, and enable usage through custom firmware. It's incredible, the adapter costs $5 and you can fit in any sized* microSD card to install games to.
* i've only tested up to a 128gb card though there shouldn't be any reason to go up to a 256gb or even 512gb card
Gosh 😮 I NEVER KNEW ABOUT THAT!
🤦♀️🙄
Excellent point. 👍

Those older console mem cards were indeed very different. The Vita memory card was in its time probably the most advanced - better than the SD cards available at the time.

Luckily I always stick with one game until reach 100% before move on to new games. So 8gb memory for my vita would be more than enough! 😁
Great video 🥰 enjoy listening it!
You are a very disciplined gamer - I always have a dozen on the go! 😁
The memory card has still stopped me from picking one up in 2020 😒🤦♀️
It is a big issue.
If you have mainly physical games, then that's plenty of memory! 👍
@@Food4Dogs Thanks so much for taking the time to give such a thoughtful reply!
Vita memory card was Vitas downfall.
but the hacking community made it for us possible to make 400-512 gb Memory cards
Fun fact: The micro SD version in the same time as the Vita memory card was faster than sony´s card.

Wow I didn't knew the psvita had a memory card, its normal for a company to make memory cards expensive, especially for video game companies like sony and nintendo the reason is sololy because of branding, for the switch it isn't as bad because every micro sd cards works on the switch

I always recommend to those with restricted mem card space that you can use a PC and with the Content Manager software easily and quickly copy/backup your game and save files to store on your computer, if you have access to one. That way you can manage what to keep on the men card for playing, and copy back a game to the Vita when needed.

Oh yes, Uncharted GA is a must-have, quite agree.

Hello,
Do you have a list of recommended games for the Vita? Would love to get one but I was always under the assumption that it didn't have many games.
No - because no one list would suit most people. Everybody's list would be different, depending on their preferred genres and styles.
The Vita has a library of approx. 300-350 titles in the West and with Japanese games a total approaching 1,500.
Fantastically insightful
Not gonna lie, I bought a brand new one for $500 a month ago. I don’t know if I got ripped off with the price or not, but it has definitely been worth it. I definitely wasn’t gonna buy the crazy expensive official memory card though, so I just hacked mine and used a 128gb SD card instead.
No, I wouldn't say you got ripped off. A brand-new Vita can go for as much as $800 (depending on type/model and colour).
@@FilipoLipos sounds like you're doing OK! 👍
Great video!!
Stolen! 😲
Wow, a Hatsune Miku special edition Vita. The stuff of dreams! 😀 Very nice.
You wouldn't believe how often I hear of people who sold their original Vita .. only to regret it and later buy another one. Then being totally surprised at the number of Vita (and PSP, PS1) games available.
But that is very interesting. About the piracy. I did not know that. Thank you :-)
Just got a 32 GB Vita memory card for $38 on ebay
Hey, that's a good price! 👍😎
epic review fellow gamer, loving the vita button lol
I just gave mine to my brother after P4G went on steam. I couldn't handle the hassle and didn't feel the need to hack it.
I like that you gave yours to your brother. 👍
I quite agree - for *most* people there really is no need to hack/mod their Vita.
@@Food4Dogs It's a shame... But I can play most games elsewhere.
Oh! Phantasy Star Online! 😍
That's interesting, everyone handles their Vitas + memory differently.
The problem is that there were no alternative options for buying these propietary cards. Not even SanDisk ones like we had in the past with Sony Ericsson phones or PSP
