    Excellent thoughts!
    "A journal becomes a companion" (superb truth) and a treasure... especially later on when you are reading it 10 years down the road. They become priceless to some of us therefore you probably want to take that into consideration when choosing a notebook. Also what about those that will read it after we are gone. They then become heirlooms!
    I also spend as much time choosing a cover for my journals and rarely choose a journal that I can't refill. That's just me, but I find myself carrying my journals across the globe and love the way my covers become worn with warm patinas! Nothing like a good leather or canvas journal cover that ages with you.
    Great video!

    Great video with some thoughts I also agree with. When you asked about our journals - my expensive journals that, as you say, I don't write in enough, are made by Design.Y in Japan. Handmade with 52gsm Tomoe River paper and leather hardcovers. These are incredible things but the prices and then import costs to the UK are a killer, especially now with the poor exchange rates we have against the JPY and USD. The books I write in the most are the Seven Seas Writer and B6 slim Cafe notebooks. They get hammered. lol. Then one of the best recent purchases I've made is the Hippo Noto. Now I really prefer that 68gsm Tomoe River paper. All the awesome qualities of the 52gsm but with almost no showthrough and no crinkling of the pages either. Finally I love the locally made in England, UK, William Hannah A6 notebook. Well worth a look at, even for the prices. 110gsm paper works well with fountain pen inks and it's a ring binder so you can add whatever style of paper you like, even down to choosing your own line colour, if you wish. Awesome book.
    Thx for the video, am now subscribed :D

    I have tried and purchased a few now. I don't use fountain pens but hate ghosting when I use any marker or pen. So, Rhodiarama has been great. My next one though will be the FallLeaves by Red Co. I am in love with the smaller size of it and all it has. :) I journal and plan in my 📔 s. Bullet Journal style but with my whole life and some art too. Thanks to you, I feel very informed before I have made any purchases!

    What's the name of the notebook that you showed around 8:59? The one that you referred to as the traveler's style notebook? I have the Midori and I totally understand what you mean about not laying flat. As much as I love it, it bothers me that it closes on its own.

    journaljoy, I see you lean more toward ruled paper notebooks, do you have any pointers or opinions on graph (not dot grid) paper? Would love to hear your thoughts.

    • @journaljoy
      @journaljoy  7 років тому

      Ceme612 Hi there, yes I haven't used graph paper in a while, since my handwriting doesn't fit in the 5mm spacing. I would make sure the graph coloring isn't too dark, otherwise it can get distracting. Lighter grey or blue... That's my 2 cents :)

    • @DaveHoran
      @DaveHoran 7 років тому

      Agreed. As a former engineer, I tended to lean towards graph ruling. However, if it's too dark it really gets in the way, especially if you need to scan the notes. I've since moved on to dot grid for this reason.

    When writing on Tomoe River paper, can you write on the front and back side of the same sheet? I recently purchased the cafe note notebook and I’m not sure if I should write on one side only or both...

    The danger with a small notebook is just what you said. It stops being a journal and becomes a to-do list, a grocery list, an address book, a place to jot down notes, etc. In other words, junk, not a journal. The last thing anyone should do, but beginners in particular, is call something a journal when they use it for notes, to-do lists, etc. That is NOT a journal, regardless of what else you use it for, and it will completely ruin the value of keeping a journal for the vast majority of people.
    You can carry a one dollar Walmart pad for crap like that. Using an expensive journal with good paper for such things is silly.
    As for paper quality, it should be acid free, lignin free, and archival quality, or it simply isn't going to last very many years. A big part of a journal's value is being able to read it again years later, and leavuing it for your children and grandchildren. But even if you don't pass it on, you will wish you still had it twenty, thirty, forty years down the road.
    Such paper does not have to be ridiculously expensive, but a Mead notebook or filler paper isn't going to cut it.
    I would also strongly suggest using lined paper, or blank paper. Graph paper is the least saved, least loved paper out there. Dot grid isn't much better. Both are UA-cam fads, and people on UA-cam think these are used a heck of a lot more than they really are out in the real world.
    Even for a beginner, more than one journal can be a good thing. So can more than one type of journal. But a book filled with lists and hastily scribbled notes is NOT a journal, and will discourage beginners within a few weeks, assuming they wanted to create a real journal. Such a "journal" is really just a grossly overpriced notepad like many have lying around the house for phone calls with lists and hastily jotted notes is not a journal.
    Expensive paper and a leather cover change nothing, other than how much you pay for a one dollar notepad that should come in packages of three.
