Tunisian crochet used to be called the Afghan stitch! We used what looked like a long knitting needle, but the tip was a crochet hook!

Hi Nat! I just discovered your channel and I loved this episode and your chatty style. I love love love those jelly belly socks. Also loving all the bright colours you've been using! I recently started a knitting podcast yourself and it is really cool to see how more "seasoned" podcasters like yourself keep your episodes fun and interesting. Can't wait for the next episode.

My addi clicks are similar to clovers but I always grab my tulip bamboo ones more even thought I only use clover and tulip etimos. I find the addi clicks don't slide as smoothly as other traditional aluminium hooks. As a bonus I do understand that if you own addi needles the cords should work on the crochet hooks.

I use an aluminum Boye tunisian crochet hook. It has a tapered head, which is what you're looking for. I got mine at Walmart.

I also use US 1 needles for socks, I wear size 8 shoes, sometimes 7.5. I have to use 68 st for a vanilla sock and 72-75 rows.
I don't know what I would pick if I had to choose between knit and crochet!

Expression Fiber Arts has a "how to knit a sweater" series that i used recently to make my first sweater! I think it's around $10 and you get the pattern and a series of videos breaking down each step of the garment. It's a bulky weight sweater so it just flies off the needles! I am totally in love with sweater knitting now!! 😍

My daughter has a friend from college and they would crochet together. Her friend does Tunisian crochet. At graduation she gave my daughter a Tunisian hook set and a book. The hooks are metal, I would have to look at hers. She has tried to figure it out but said she was having trouble with it. It does look interesting, I think they look like knitting needles with a hook on the end.

Look on amazon for the Tunisian hooks. There are some of the hook heads that you like, and I think there are some with the cord options as well. Hop you are able to find a set!! I like Tunisian crochet, and want to use that technique more!

Hi Natalie, The best Tunisian hooks I’ve found are the Denise Interchangeable Crochet Hook kit. They are plastic hooks but they work like a dream, I was so surprised, I tried the wooden and metal hooks but they didn’t work for my hands. I also use the Clover hooks as you do.

For Tunisian crochet, your could try Susan Bates Flexible Afghan hook. I have one that I haven’t used yet, but it sounds like the type of hook you might like. I got one at Hobby Lobby, but I will say that this line of hooks is limited in sizes.

I made a tunesian crochet baby blanket once using a wooden hook. It wasn't the wood that made it horrible, it was just the way the hook turned. Because of all the stitches on the hook itself it wasn't as easy to turn the hook around as normal crochet. It really hurt my shoulder and wrist to finish the blanket. I do not recommend tunesian crochet at all. It was such a struggle to finish..
I'm challenging myself to knit a sock continentally this week. Thanks for the fun knit along challenge.

You could make a tunisian headband using your boye hooks. The clover handle would get in the way. Tlyarncraffts has a great youtube tutorial.

Not sure if it will be the same for you or not, but I prefer a different style hook when I am doing Tunisian crochet than I do for regular crocheting. It might be worth trying a couple before you invest in a set just to make sure your taste isn't different with the different style crochet.

Hey Shannon. My first knitted Garment was a skirt. You work in the round with some increases but no seaming or sleeves. As an example www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/little-black-skirt. I also made a kind of shirt that was just two rectangles sewn together at the end. Than I tried a baby sweater. If it goes wrong you just have to frog a small piece. Boxy sweaters are good for beginners as gauge is not as important. Like the one by Joji Locatelli. Good luck.

I completed my sock this week per your survival guide. Thank you so so much. I have a question, can you possibly do a video on different types of sock yarn? I knit a sock using a very thin sock yarn and I couldn't get it over my foot but I knit a sock for the sock week using Malabrigo sock and it fits perfectly. Thoughts? Rachelle in Seattle

    • @KnittyNatty
      @KnittyNatty  4 роки тому

Yay!! Great job! That is interesting. Yes sock bases vary and can make a big difference in the size of your sock. I will add that to my video list and see what I can do. :)

Hey Natalie! I thought I would share this tunisian crochet hook with you. It isn't exactly what you want I know (not interchangeable), but it is the inline hook shape, and metal. So there is a couple pros! Also, let me give you this tip. With tunisian crochet, it is very common for your stitches/gauge to be much tighter and more dense than if you were to crochet normally. This hook I am linking is a 6 mm, but that would work well for DK, and probably even fingering! No pressure of course, just thought I would share. Also, I highly recommend the WeCrochet/KnitPick interchangeable hook set. Yes, they are wooden. But I have the same preferences as you and I actually love them! They are compatible with the cables you already own, so I would suggest trying one for fun ;)
