The evolution of RP's voice is truly amazing! When he first started with Zep, his voice was so shockingly powerful, no one had ever heard that before. RP actually has learned to become a more mature singer over the years, adjusting to change very well. Greatest of all time, and no one will ever sound like him, truly unique, the one and only!
Definitely the most musically talented in the biz and so damn intelligent and sweet as pie!!!! I met him in 83. I enjoy how he still throws in a zeppelin tune here and there but does it differently.

I remember I got this album and I liked it and then I saw his new band on TV on a Montreaux Jazz Festival for the first time and when they did a few Zeppelin songs I started focusing on the drummer. He had short hair like here and wasnt wearing a shirt and I thought this guy doesnt deserve to be drumming for Robert Plant. It's amazing what a little extra hair and some weight will change your apprearance. Little did I know he would do two tours with Page / Plant and an album. He really turned out to be a solid drummer, I think it was on the Unleded MTV special that he really impressed me especially on Four Sticks and Kashmir. I saw him live 3 times, once with Plant for Fate of Nations tour and 95' and 98' for the Plant/Page tours. Sad he died so young, he really did a solid job of drumming for Page and Plant.
This performance is fascinating for a host of reasons though. Here he does, "Whole Lotta Love", as the second song and hits notes I have not heard him do since the days of Zeppelin. VERY exciting and impressive in that sense. But you all cover him by calling it, "maturity". Right. What ever. There are reason why he has to do slow, quite, whisper music now a days and why Zeppelin couldn't continue beside the issue of Bonzo.
I think him getting older is an apparent factor. Robert could have easily pulled a full time Zep reunion off until about 2000. We basically got that with Page/Plant from 94-98.
I doubt anyone in history could pull off what he does touring and doing performances as much and as long as he does. So many folks focus on the 1 or 2 bad ones!
charlie dorox thanks for reply, that is very sad, i saw him play in Vienna around that time with Plant's band and i still remember that mighty drumsound wuth perfect timing. he stole the show. huge talent who reminded me of carmine appice, bonham, moon...
Pretty strange contrast in music here. 29 palms has a 90s alt-country feel & then right into WLL with it's 70s psychedelic heavy rock sound. Just weird. Big difference between Robert's different eras. His solo career was successful but not nearly as "big time" as he was with Zep. He was transitioning here from his 10 years of basically ignoring his past to embracing it probably for career resurgence & more money I'm guessing...
Now that's one narrow minded, and obviously clueless statement. First off, money doesn't even factor into anything he decides to explore and experience. His artistic genius allowed him a life beyond his wildest imagination, and wealth is the first thing that came to him.
@@walcoman I disagree. The whole reason they left Jones & Jason out of the Page-Plant project was over money. Why else would they leave them out when the set list was almost 100% Zeppelin on those TWO tours? Come on man. Plant went RIGHT back to Zep material on Now & Zen when his solo career "prog rock" experiment wasn't selling.
Back when Robert could still be heard over his backing band. Since 2002 he's pushed himself so far in the background while his backing band takes the lead. I guess it has a lot to do with his ever failing voice over the years.
Actually his range is exactly the same as it was in 1975 after his nodules operation. I saw him live and he hits beatifully controlled C5s on Babe I'm gonna leave you,and pushes his voice like in the old days in a lot of songs (a lot of his setlist is made of Zeppelin). His mindset is a lot different from his younger days where he fronted zeppelin Bare-chested. He's 69 .
@@TheStrikesRock Oh? Then why did Page/Plant/Jones downtune so heavily in '07 at the 02. Are you a vocal coach? It was plainly obvious when he tried to sing Stairway in key at the 02, his voice broke and there was nothing there when he tried to sing "there walks a lady we all know" at the end of the solo. In the bootleg release his voice breaks badly. It's been massaged heavily in the official release. In '79 and '80 he could get there although he had to push for it. This smells like a troll post. His range is NOT even close to what he had in 1980. If he was he wouldn't making the concerted effort to 'talk' through parts and stay in the lower end of his range. It's not a 'bare chest' thing. The high end is nearly gone and Plant knows it. Obviously you don't. It's been that way since about 1988. He just handles it differently by sidestepping situations what call for a wail. And yes, I've seen him too and vocal deterioration is plainly visible for all to hear. He may control what he has left, but you won't sell me on his range is intact at 1975 levels. 1988-1993 perhaps. ua-cam.com/video/mW2-fqApufQ/v-deo.html He couldn't do this today. The texture of his voice has changed to a high degree.
