Mons Meg isn't fired. It was last fired in 1681 and after the jacobite rebellion with bonnie Prince Charlie was transported down to London to the Tower of London in 1754 where it remained. The 1 o'clock gun isn't fired at new year, its daily atv1pm, good Friday and Xmas day. And it's a regular field gun that's used to fire the 'blank' shell from the castle battlements over the city. Mons Meg was so big that a man could fit in the mouth of the cannon. 😉
