It is incredible to me how Ben managed to pull Asteroid City out of actual thin air, and whiffed so hard with Dante's Peak, in the same session. This man is perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
God, the energy Lewis brings... I love it. Whenever he isn't in a recording session, I can feel the difference. Him coming back just elevated this series for me.
a running Dante's Peak thing could hilariously end up with everybody having to watch the movie just in case every build had to end up a different scene
I wanna stand up for Ben and say Lewis did a bad lord of the rings, I dont remember the ring being thrown into a tiny closed off cave, it was a giant lava canyon from memory
Isn’t this the second time Ben totally dropped the ball on a lord of the rings build and guessed something insane? I think we need to revoke his nerd card.
Ben is always doing this though. He just looks at the builds head on, but never actually explores the builds, he never goes behind them. I've seen Dante's Peak, I wasn't aware it was rated so poorly. I actually enjoyed it. It has been many years since I watched it though.
I feel bad for Ben, but it is amazing how he is yet to learn to look around the entire build, not just from the front. It has backfired on him so many times
stardate is probably used for the same reason as other sci fi uses sidereal time, the same date/time is used all across the galaxy because on some planets a day might be 70 hours compared to another with 16, so having one standard across the galaxy allows for more accurate event keeping and timekeeping
Timekeeping on a galactic scale would be SO MUCH harder than that though. The problem is "now" doesn't really exist in more than one spot. Relativity really screws things up when the order of events becomes arbitrary...
Humans on earth won't even agree upon a standard temperature or measurement system, we're so damn lucky we all keep time the same way. Imagine proper official aliens coming here and going "hey btw we're giving you this Astro-Time system to keep up with uhhh every 3.6 hours is one Star Hour so keep that in mind from now on." we'd be pissed we'd start wars.
@@PanSpaceman Luckily that can't happen because time doesn't work that way. Time is relative to the observer and their velocity. In the large scale, you can't sync up time, because different amounts of time pass due to orbital velocity. That includes galactic orbits too. The farther out from the galactic core, the less time you experience. It's pretty wild to imagine timekeeping on a large scale when the universe doesn't allow the concept of "now" to be constant to different observers. EDIT: It happens for smaller scale stuff too if you care about precision. The clocks in our GPS satellites experience about 4 less seconds per decade than the Earth's surface.
@@Prophes0r Time dilation is fascinating to imagine - but with advanced computers and/or some sort of communications relay technology, don't you think we'd still be able to synchronize to a standard (possibly Earth-based) clock and calendar? I can imagine some additional difficulty with humans 'de-synchronizing' from that clock―especially if we ever achieve constant acceleration in space travel à la The Expanse―but in such cases, travelers could keep track of their own personal clocks separately (almost like traveling between time zones on earth) while still being aware of the Standard Time.
@@captain_britain i can imagine this is what ship time would generally be, a standard clock on ships that allows you to time keep but can be updated as and when you come into contact with a location that keeps sidereal time calculated correctly, the ship can still work out rotas, relative date etc from setting out but can adjust when given the opportunity edit: i very much do not know much about how time works on a galactic scale but its pretty neat

Dante’s Peak is such an bad movie that it became good again. If you haven’t seen it I genuinely recommend it but as a comedy instead. The scene when he drives over lava and the car tires are on fire but they extinguish as soon as he leaves the lava cracks me up every time.

Bouphe was on point with the teeth burn on Scotland. My dad's from Glasgow and in his mid-thirties would receive compliments from his relatives on 'having all his ain teeth'
To those of you who weren't alive in the 90's, there was literally a time when 2 movies featuring a volcano as the bad-guy were in theaters. We also had competing movies about asteroids as the bad-guy. And about having to drill to the center of the earth too. Basically, in the 90s we made 2-4 of every movie and made them fight to see what one was better. You are welcome...
@@tutalillyOf course. The real question is whether you stand on the side of Armageddon and Volcano (The correct side), or Deep Impact and Dante's Peak.
IIRC the point of the stardate was specifically to not make sense. It was so people couldn't go "ackchually this episode was two weeks before this episode but at standard cruising speed a Constitution-class ship wouldn't be able to travel that far 🤓" or whatever time-based nerdery they might find.
I guess these Minecraft videos don't lend themselves to that sort of thing as much as TTT, but I'm still surprised we didn't hop to someone's perspective with their totally legit nickname during that discussion.

@@BunzJackson That's the scene I would have built.
I'm amazed he got Asteroid City given that there's a distinct lack of grass fields in that movie.
