Whitetail Summer Scouting - Iowa Public Land Scouting Trip

- Follow along as I take a cross country deer scouting trip to Iowa. After several years of applying, I drew the coveted Iowa deer tag so I planned to do some summer velvet scouting to get an idea of what kind of bucks are in the area. Over 3 days, I scouted roughly ten different pieces of public hunting land in hopes that when I return in the fall, I'll have be in the game on a giant Iowa buck. Summer scouting for bucks can be super challenging but soybean scouting can be super effective and I was able to get eyes on several promising deer in a short amount of time. I tried to sprinkle in as many whitetail scouting tips as I could, so I hope it helps you out! If nothing else, you can laugh at me getting ate up by bugs and sweating my butt off. First off, congrats on getting an Iowa tag! Looking forward to seeing some massive bucks come season. Second, would bucks use power line roads to scent check bedding? I found a public piece that has swamp bedding just off of power lines and I know people sit them. Would it be worth trying or no just because of competition?
They might use it the same way or the bucks might circle down wind of where the other hunters set up. It also depends how much cover there is in the powerline. If its super wide and doesnt have tall grass, I doubt a good buck will be cruising it.
@@NextStepOutdoors I was there in spring and it had waste high grass and was probably 20-30 feet wide.

@@NextStepOutdoors Thats the best side to hunt. Im on NW Iowa and the few and far between public parcels we've got have 3 stands in every tree to shoot our rare 120" deer lol

It's a way deer communicate with each other by leaving scent on a branch or vine. The are community posts in a way and they make great places to run cameras for inventory.
