In today's video, I'm addressing a question many of you have asked: 'What lens would you choose if you could only have one for the Fujifilm X mount?' Or, as some call it, 'What is your desert island lens?' I'll be sharing my reasons for picking the XF 23mm F1.4 WR LM over the XF 33mm F1.4 as my ultimate desert island lens.
The XF 23mm F1.4 WR LM quickly became one of my favorites after shooting with the XF 35mm and the XF 33mm for so long. I am so accustomed to the 50mm full-frame equivalent that it started to get stale. And that's where this new 23mm F1.4 lens comes into play. It provided me with something unique, sparked creativity, and, most importantly, got me some amazing photos.
In this video, I'll delve into the distinctive features of the XF 23mm F1.4 WR LM, how it transformed my shooting experience, and why it became my go-to lens. Stick around, enjoy the discussion, and don't forget to hit that like button, leave a comment, and subscribe for more engaging content!

One's a little wider, one's a little tighter LOL. It is good to have options.
hahaha
I have the 33mm f1.4. Optically it is excellent, especially for portraits and when you want some separation between the subject and the background, but as a walk around lens, I find that the view is often a bit too narrow in many situations.
35mm is such a clutch focal distance. Nothing worse than only having one lens and 50mm being too tight to get the shot with no room to back up. I'm super curious how the new Sigma 23mm & 30mm f1.4 lenses compare to Fuji's own. Maybe you can treat us to a comparison of the Sigma to Fuji wide open at f1.4. Your channel has been a treasure as a new Fuji owner (XS-20). Another dope video would be some a favorite film recipes with newer Nostalgic Negative film sim that's on the S-20 and T-5. Thanks man.
Hey great video! When I bought my first xt3 the older 23mm 1.4 was the first lens that I bought. And It's an excellent allrounder. But when I bring all my lenses, I more often choose the 16mm or the 35.....a lot of my favorite shots are at 16mm. So it would be either the 16 or the 16-55, but because I also like low light stuff, I would go for the 16mm f1.4. Who needs a portrait lens on a deserted Island :)
The XF 23mm F1.4 WR LM is an amazing lens and I love shooting with it.
Owning both the 23 and the 33 I must admit that there is a honeymoon phase with the 33. Used to shoot the previous 23 for almost 2 seats exclusively. Still love the 23 but the 33 works little better for people if you have the space and do not shoot groups
Thanks for the information! The 23mm was the lens that you suggested to me for street photography. Thanks for talking about it in this video! 🤜🤛 📸
My pleasure! thank you
I would choose the 23mm as well. :) The 30mm macro would be my alternative pick for its small size and macro capabilities.
Good choice - the 23 LM WR is an awesome lens. I love the thing and it is dominating my catalog this year. I find that it also has awesome autofocus. Acquisition/tracking/hit rate is probably tops in Fuji land - I can be pretty lazy with it and it still seems to get the shot. That said, if I were trapped on an island, it'd be hard for me not to go with a zoom.
Desert island lens, doesnt have to be practical LOL i just picked the lens I vibe with the most lately ahhah cuz we all know that zoom would be ideal in this situation
Very good choice 👍
0:55 If you don't have options, chose the tighter. - Regarding the lenses: 23 is more versatile.
So where does the viltrox 27 1.2 fit in? Did it go back?
For me the 23 pairs nicely with the 56, 75 o5 or 90. The 33 I tend to pair almost exclusively with the 18. But 18+56 is a lot of fun, so the 33 gets neglected a bit!
Now I have the 27, I'm having a real hard time deciding which one has to go! I do find theres a narrow window of magic for the 23, like you mentioned, you need to get up close to get that shallow depth of field and smooth bokeh. Without that compression I feel it can be a bit harsh. It requires effort. The 27 is like having a cheat code, as you can also take a wider view and still get that depth of field and nice bokeh ... but it is a chunky monkey.
I still have it. Gonna do a comparison video between the 23 and the 27 soon.
"...some serious Tonehs..." LOL!! Fun video, have a great week!
thanks charle
of course
so does it have to be a prime, and is it a very small island? If not, then my does everything ok, then xf18-135mm a clear jack of all trades master of none.
I don’t blame you, I had to pick up this lens too! 🫨
For me it would be the viltrox 27mm f1.2, offers the best of both (the creamy bokeh from the 33mm, the contrast and sharpness from the 23mm).
AWESOME
Man Kathleen is everywhere. Great vid my dude.
Now she is!
@@Iamtongue I swear she's the most popular model on the gta and Hamilton lol. Go girl!
If I could only take 1 lens for fuji... the 23mm, the 33mm or the 56mm on a deserted island.... with all the space in the world i could probably take the 56mm... but would take the 33mm (or in my case the 35mm F/1.4 since I don't own the 33mm) because it is a perfect focal length for story telling, there is no distortion (no matter how slight in the 23mm) it represents how the world looks...
Having said that, my go to lenses in my camera bag are the 23mm and 56mm with those I don't need to carry the 35mm (although for many years, I did all my photography with just the 35mm)
I could see lots of arguments for an even wider lens from some people, the 18mm or 16mm and they could justify it as well
Optically I do find the 18 1.4 better and of course you can crop. If you don't mind the extra distortion when getting closer to people. 18+33 is a great combo. But so too is 23+56, although honestly I only ever shot that way with the x100v (now sold) and the 56 on another body.
However.... new favourite is 18+56 especially in more crowded environments as you can really isolate the subject with the 56, while the 18 takes in the scene.
And if all else fails and you are just paralysed by choice. Tap out with a zoom!
There’s 3 prime lenses that are a must have for every ecosystem that I own. That is a 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm or their FF equivalent. The 23mm 1.4 is next on my list. Amazing video as always 🔥🔥
Thats a lot of money bags yo but I feel the same 😭😬😂
Choose the sigma 30mm f1.4, which is affordable, bokeh king, soo light and valueable in photography. 30mm is about the middle of 23 and 33 😉
I'd go with the 33 because it like em tight. 🙂
phrasing!
If the Viltrox 27mm f1.2 was that great, why would you still pick the 23 & 33 Fuji?
I have Fuji 23mm 1.4 WR and Viltrox 27mm 1.2. But most time I take 23mm because it is not so big and heavy.
Size ultimately.
I've got the 23 and am suffering from GAS for the Viltrox. First world problems. 🙂
@@brianw6645 same goes to me having the 33 🙈 what should we do 😭
The new Sirui sniper 23 1.2 AF
I feel the 23mm(35mm) is a boring focal length. The 18mm tells a better more interesting story and the 35mm is more versatile especially if you photograph people. I love the 18mmf2+35mm1.4 combo.
to each their own
Yall are thinking of this all wrong. You bring an XF 200m lens that way you're more likely to be spotted by passing planes and boats. 😁
Man you're playing 3-D chess
27-35 on apsc seems very odd to me
I go from 25 to 40 directly
