Michael, thank you for this! I have been waiting to pull the trigger on a home system just like this, and using your code, I finally will! Props from the Coast Range near Brookings...snowed-in again today!

Pretty nifty gadget. I'm dead set on my mercury thermometer and barometer though, that and sticking my finger in the air.
    Have a great day!

I’ve had a Davis Vantage 2 since they first came out. Been on WeatherLink from day one. I have a solar radiation sensor and a soil moisture/temperature station. I don’t need to upgrade.

I have a need for an accurate rain detector, however the actual rainfall volume measurement or intensity is not important. Would Tempest still be a good choice?
In essence, i want to know the instant it starts raining, and not how much it's raining.

I want something like this, but must be able to interface with my computer directly. I have been burned twice by purchasing units that connect to my router and then send the data elsewhere for me to download via the internet. Once the company bailed on it's own product (closed the website) and the other had the interface to my router fail. I am sure there must be something that can connect, even if only by a serial cable. Does this system have that capability, or can you recommend one that does? Thanks.

‪I’ve owned the original Weatherflow, a Tempest, and now a Vantage Pro2. If I wasn’t so concerned with super accurate rain readings I’d still have a Tempest, it’s an amazing little unit. The rain check feature worked pretty well, but I still wanted more accurate. Weatherflow is doing some cool things with their technology. The lightning detection is scary good on these units. The smart home integration is a nice touch as well.

The Tempest is interesting. Have had it now for 2.5 years. Very good data, recorded history and fairly accurate measurements. With the exception of the rain sensor. I have found that with our frequent very light rains, the Tempest has difficulty. Not that big of deal since I have an analog rain gauge. Just note, the location of your station is critical. And, clean it twice a year. Also, in our dim winters the charging of the station can be affected. Overall, I highly recommend the Tempest for anyone who is a weather geek like me. Absolutely love the app for home observation from out of town. Get It!!!

WOW! That's really inexpensive for what you get! About the cost of Solar/UV sensors from Davis! lol!
Question... How would this system handle SNOW? Our station D2149 is located in the Sierra and is the reporting station for Bass Lake Ca. on Hanford's All Hazards Radio station. SNOW is obviously a big thing for us right now with nearly 5 feet on the ground and another system on the way. I've got a custom heated rain bucket I built for our Davis VP2 Plus Model 6163 that I swap in every winter to handle measurement of our snowfall. Locations like ours would need to have to have a way to measure snow during the winter, otherwise you would miss a big chunk of the annual precipitation.
LOVE your videos Michael! Your California reports have become a staple for us every morning!

Had one and returned it! Why? Well if you can not position it where there is Direct Sunlight the solar is worthless! For me I can not get direct sunlight for two hours (min.) per day to keep the unit charged. this is an issue for anyone living in an area with no direct sunlight during the winter. I'll be trying out the Ecowitt next as it has replaceable batteries compartment and better options compared to Weatherflow.

I was a Tempest backer when it was on Kickstarter and have been using mine for the past 2.5 years and absolutely love it. It makes our "weather events" a lot more interesting and fun to have your own station. The lightning detection is almost instantaneous. I've seen a flash and gotten an alert on my phone before I even hear the thunder.

@@jaimehart5108 One way to check if this is having a difference is to compare the visually measured value with weighing the rain gauge and computing the amount of rainfall. The weighing method is all I use during months when there is snow/ice. One thing to be careful of is that there can be several grams difference between the 4" CoCoRaHS gauges. At first I assumed they would be the same - wrong assumption! I use multiple gauges during the winter for ease of measurement. My CoCoRaHS station is WA-SM-6.

Knowing me, it would be an analytical Mettler balance which would put me in debt until doomsday. I was thinking of spraying the inside of the large housing with some sort of silicon spray to break the surface tension on the drops but both Noah Newman and Trent Davis of NWS are either at a conference, on vacation or sick and I haven’t heard from them.
