Hi! I am currently trying to do a similar research regarding the same method. I am using PLA and DCM. However, after casting and submerging it into water, we do not get the same result of the clear mixture turning opaque. Any thoughts or suggestions for this?
Hello. Can you give me detailed instructions on laminating the film so that the surface is even and thin like yours? I'm making it from PS and ABS plastic, but I'm having problems when the phase inversion of the film surface is not spread evenly and the cracking effect is not very good. Thank you
It seems some researchers did not use casting machine during their experiments. Is casting machine necessary for a research purpose as well or is a casting knife enough?
You can do research without a casting machine, but of course, your results will be more reliable if you control more parameters, relative humidity, air and water temperature, immersing speed, etc. Everything affects the properties of the membrane.
I am working with a similar membrane based on (aldehyde) functionalized pva, however I am facing the issue of insufficient pervaporation performance as after drying the membrane once, presumably because the nanopores are collapsing as well as the membrane being less hydrophilic than I would’ve liked. Can you imagine any workaround to that problem? I‘d like to avoid carboxylated cellulose as that may aid in biodegrading the membrane, additionally it should be able to dry out without loss in performance. Thanks very much
Pervaporation membranes are different to this type of membranes. My suggestions are probably the ones you might have thought about it: decrease the cross linking degree to have bigger pores, decrease thickness to have higher permeation and increase the temperature of operation to have higher diffusion. Your idea of increase the hydrophilicity is also good if you are trying to permeate water, and there are many polymers that you can use, not only carboxylated cellulose.
It is an automatic bar coater. I am not familiar with membranes for vanadium batteries, I work mainly in membranes for water treatment and desalination.
Hi sir. Can you recommend me any precautionary measure to maintain uniform thickness distribution by using tape and glass rod? I often face this problem where there are parts in my membrane has thickness around 125 micron and sometimes there was 150 micron for example.
The main problem when you do it by hand is to keep a constant speed on a large sample. The speed affects the thickness because a polymer solution is not-newtonian fluid and will respond to the deformation of the glass rod differently. If you can't control the speed do it very slowly or just make small samples.
Hey Mr. , at the moment im working with membranes, too. The problem is: i can't produce an even surface on my membran with the phase inversion. Do do you have any hints for parameter i could variate? Thank you in advance.
Yes, but it depends on the type of membrane you are making, and how you are making it. If you want, send me an email with more details of your problem.

hi, I'm trying to make a casting solution but with cellulose acetate and acetone, I would like to know how to make it gel-like and clear like this one you prepared. your really would be much appreciated.
Dear sir, I am trying to fabricate a similar membrane, can you please help me with the details of the casting machine used in your study? Is it readily available in Japan?
Good evening sir. I hope you are still active. I wanted to use this phase inversion with HDPE. DO you now of any suitable solvents I can use for that ?
It is, of course. What you remove depends on the feed composition. Typical pores size of these membranes is up to 10 nm. For smaller pore size you need a different membrane.
Salts is a very broad concept in chemistry. If you mean Sodium chloride, this is not a desalination membrane, but might be used as support to prepare one.
Hi, Can you please tell me the name of the casting knife? I'm working in Membrane and i'm using manual method and it doesn't give a good membrane film. Thanks.
Hai. I have been producing pvdf membrane. But I am unable to produce the membrane with even surface. Sometimes the membrane comes out perfect while the other time the membrane has a lot of wrinkles on its surface. I wonder if you have ever encounter this problem. Hope to hear from you soon.
I found 2 parameters critical to avoid wrinkling. The time between casting and water immersion and laboratory temperature and ventilation. Wrinkling on the membrane surface comes from surface drying before phase inversion.
Is different. Here, an immersion-precipitation process happens. The polymer solution becomes a solid membrane. Most of the solvent diffuses in the water.
Membranes are usually stored wet with a solution containing a small amount of biocide. After drying the membranes must be treated again with wetting agents before use.
In principle, you can use any polymer as long as it can be dissolved in a certain solvent and precipitated in another solvent that is miscible with the first one.

Just google "flat sheet membrane casting machine", there are many brands in USA, even bigger than this one.

Hello Sir, how to prevent contamination while casting or during immerse in coagulation bath? Because my prisrine membrane had contaminated
A laboratory for membrane preparation must be free of dust and with controlled temperature and humidity. The bath must contain ultrapure water.
please make a video on how to make nafion membrane

Good evening sir. I hope you are still active. I wanted to use this phase inversion with HDPE. DO you now of any suitable solvents I can use for that ?
Still active. HDPE has no good solvent at room temperature.
Hi, was there any formation of wrinkles on the surface after the phase inversion?
No. Completely flat. If you are getting wrinkles probably you waited too much before immersing it in water and the surface dried.
i hope you are still active. How is this difference from NIPS?
No difference. NIPS = Non-solvent Induced Phase Separation Process.
