First, your dog is so cute! I love that she just sat there watching you for awhile. Also, I really bounce between two niches. I have lots of experience in skincare, and also lots of experience in digital marketing in general. I struggle knowing which one to niche to because I enjoy both so much! This was very eye opening though, thank you!
Thank you! She is actually my parents’ dog and I was just watching her for the week while my parents were on vacation. And why not make two portfolios and see which one works out?
Hi, love your channel! Quick question. I think you mentioned contracts at one point in another video and I'm wondering if you have any other videos that may go in to more detail about contracts? Also, would these be a legal/liability type contract for clients are they more for summarizing the specific deliverables for the client, if that makes sense? Just at the beginning of my freelance journey and don't want to miss anything I might need to take care of business-wise. Thanks for the great content!
Hi Colleen, I've been meaning to get into freelancing for something like five or six years now but I've never known where to start or what I would write about. Your videos about setting up a site, writing a portfolio on spec and cold pitching were helpful but I still can't figure out my niche. I wrack my brain but it feels like I don't really know enough about anything in particular, you know? Like I possess a Snapple cap's worth of knowledge about many things, but nothing that anyone would actually pay for. I've gone over a list of topics I know about and enjoy, which has helped me narrow it down a bit but I'm still not sure which field would actually make money. I'm a musician and I love to nerd out over new instruments, amplifiers, and effects. There are plenty of small to medium sized companies to pitch to and guitar sales surged during the pandemic. Successful freelancers always say you should pick a super-specific niche. Should I go with something like guitar/bass gear in general, or hyper focused like, say, bass effect pedals? Do you think this could even be a niche worth pursuing? Thanks!
Hey, I don't think you need to choose a super-specific niche. Your general niche sounds good enough. That being said I do believe that you can see success in this niche if you consistently pitch to the said companies. The niche might not have high demand but this also means it has less competition so you get a chance to stand out more. Keep polishing your portfolio and keep pitching. You should be good to go.
What about combined niches / having more than one: I could see how someone could be an expert in parenting and education because they can be related. And since many families have pets that could be a 3rd niche? - Thoughts? Or am I just looking for a loophole?
Mam could u tell how to start & get freelancing clients as a design construction engineer bcoz there are not much projects in my field which are given to freshers without 2yrs of experience in execution of design so how can i get through this problem & thrive in the uncertain phase ?
@@colleenwelsch_ In general advice what would you suggest normally for any other beginner freelancer for getting clients initially without being stuck in competition ?
Many copywriters have different advice when it comes to copywriting niches. Some say don't choose a niche because you are limiting yourself to opportunities. Some say choose a niche and specialize in it. In my opinion, just choose whatever works for you. These influencers are just guides.
You're not limiting yourself to opportunities. You're specializing so you can get BETTER opportunities. And, yeah, this is the Freelance Writer's Guide. Guide is in the name.
hey colleen!!! could you make an updated version for 2023? I've been revisiting this one for weeks now and it's really helpful
It's on my list!

I’m glad you find it helpful :)

Not yet, but that's a good idea! I'll add it to my calendar

This is really helpful, thanks for digging into the research! What would you recommend if we'd like to offer more than one niche?
Make two separate portfolios and see which one gets more traction :)
@@colleenwelsch_ Great idea! Thank you!!
Should we be concerned if the niche we want to write about isn't listed here?
No. After all, 2022 was almost 2 years ago :) Much has changed.
Hello...what about writing for health, who are my clients? Am not talking about alternative health
Health apps, supplements, doctors offices, pharmacy companies, hospitals, etc.
Any thoughts on Art & History as a content writing niche?
It could be a niche for freelance writing but not for copywriting, since it's not an industry
Would sleep be a good niche or is it not wide enough?

Parenting and education can go together, but not pets! You are looking for a loophole with that one :)
Yay! My interests -- (health) food & (domestic) travel are my interests... Do you know any public figures who do freelance copy on these subjects?
Great video. I'd like to freelance in Positive Mindset. Could Positive Mindset be in the Mental Health niche? Thanks 😊
Who would your clients be?
@@colleenwelsch_ They’d be millennial women who desire to change their mindset by thinking positively instead of negatively.

Sorry, I don’t know anything about that type of freelancing!

Cold pitching! I have a few videos on it
