Performing the Requiem in May with a community chorus. Your recordings have been invaluable. Last time I sang in a chorus was in high school - 40 yrs ago. Thanks so much for all the effort!
You are amazing, thank you for your prompt reply, our concert is March 17th, I certainly do not expect you to have this done by then, but I certainly appreciate your willingness. You offer a very valuable service for many basses. learning their parts in between rehearsals, since as you know there often simply is not enough time to run through all the parts during rehearsals,( we notice though the Tenors seem to be allotted more time.......lol) Thanks again!
Hello dear Jonathan. We did it! Last week was our first concert for public with our choir. Thanks to your precious help it was a real succes!!!!!Big hug en Merry Christmas!Anneke
Thank you very much!! Thanks to your generous contribution with our choir we were able to do the Mozart Requiem. An affectionate greeting from Argentina.
oh my GOSH, thank you so much for these!!!! I'm bass section leader in my choir and though my director's given us the choralia tracks to practice against, all the vocals are computer-generated, so it's REALLY HELPFUL to have a real human being singing this for both myself and my section! Especially since a few from my section are a bit green in the classical repertoire department. Honestly, thank you!!!!!
No problem! Yeah, much easier to sing along with a real voice ... just ignore my pronunciation! If your conductor says something different then they're definitely right. Thanks!
A brilliant resource for us choral bass newbies. You're doing a great job and providing a wonderful service. I use your stuff every day. Thanks a million. Ron (Perth, Australia)
I will be taking part in a performance of the Mozart Requiem and as it is quite a few years since I did this I am delighted ot have these videos as a refresher, well done bass hymn
Totally agree with the comments made. I've found this an invaluable resource, and as that's your piano playing as well (recording, I know) you deserve a medal for hard work and effort. You look as if you're singing from the lower decks of the Titanic in the most recent contributions, but I'm guessing you must be at some kind of music school/academy. Anyway, well done and thanks again..
Yep, it's Jonnie! Thanks! You may have seen that I finished The Requiem this week ... I'm on holiday next week, but will be putting up a video or two a week when I get back ... I'm thinking of Faure's Requiem next, as well as his Cantique, although I'm struggling with the French :S ... any requests (in the public domain) then let me know!
Set myself the task to learn this for a 'come & sing' in Symphony Hall Birmingham(UK) next Jan.. I don't read music - this helps give me just a ghost of a chance of succeeding; thank you !
Many thanks - yes, I actually work as a pianist and don't know much about singing. But sorry, the piano tracks are just me playing into my digital piano and then they disappear when i turn off the power! A good idea though.
+basshymn When I drive by car (often far away, for hours, in Finland everything is far away), I listen to these bass parts. By listening I will learn quickly. Of course, before that I have looked at that part of the book. Then again, I'm listening. And again, I check some intonations, and I listen to and look at the book. Thank you for your valuable work! I appreciate.
+basshymn Here is a link to Mozart's Requiem performances 10/31/2015. We listened to your singing bass-stems. They helped in training. virtuaalikirkko.fi/videoarkistot/oulun-tuomiokirkko/mozart-requiem/ At Christmas 2016 we are going to present: J.S.Bach: Christmas Oratorio BWV 248 Parts1-3. Do you have Bach's Christmas oratorio bass-stems? :)
+Juha Siitonen thanks for the link, glad it helped people learn the notes! I do have a copy of the Christmas oratorio - I don't know it very well though. Might take a look over the summer! Seems like a long way away but will probably be with us sooner than we know it!
@yoyoyoyohan Thanks very much ... that sounds quite difficult, but I'll get round to it eventually, maybe! Vivaldi's Gloria once I've finished this ...
I haven't done that one ... and I'm not sure where you could find it. I've got three movements of Schubert's Mass in G left to do and then I can have a pop at it, no problem! When is the concert? If it's soon then I should probably get cracking! Thanks very much for the support!
Hello again, Some have referred to you as Jonnie. Is that your name? (I like to use people's names if they don't mind that I do; but if you prefer to remain anon I do understand). Just want you to know that I've used other videos to help me learn the bass parts in Mozart's Requiem but I keep coming back to yours as it's far and away the best. Thanks so much once again. You're a life saver! :-) Best, Ron
@basshymn, I am really glad you do all this video, it really help me to learn outside the excercise schedule, awesome job!. And I was wondering whether you are open for like song request? if so, would you please do mozart's KV 276 Regina Coeli?
No problem, thanks for getting in touch! I will add your request to my list, although I am struggling to find any time to record at the moment with two young children! Hopefully I'll get around to it one day!
Grievance87 Hey, thanks a lot. Yeah, I've been uploading videos for a few years now and I'm really pleased and surprised at how many people I've helped. Everyone is very supportive in the comments too, which helps a lot. Thanks, appreciate the support.
overall a great job!! EXTREMELY helpful; however there were a few problems with intonation at points particularly in the final three bars with the odd accidentals.
Have you done any Bass parts for Dvoraks Mass in D?, if not might you know were I could obtain this? I am a great singer, have difficulty reading music, and learn by ear. Followed your fantastic rendition of Mozart's Requim which we performed in December, thank you so much and keep up the great work!
Bonjour Cher Jonathan, I want to ak you IF yoyu have some(much!) spare time left (which I doubt) you could sing the bass parts of Mozart Missa Brevis K 65 (61a). I must learn this for the 2cond half of august 2018 and you're such a good help!So.......????? PLEASE?????But ofcours I'll understand if this is not possible, we'll all still love you!Thankful greetings for what you already did for us choirsingers!
I have a list ... and I will add it to it! But it’s hard to find the time. Thanks for the suggestion though! I have a few Fridays free soon so maybe then.
It's actually a concrete monstrosity of a church tower where I teach piano ... but I see what you mean! Let me know if you'd like any videos made ... and thanks for the thanks!
That's a very kind offer. You're not the first person to suggest this, so I've now added a DONATE button to my blog - basshymn.blogspot.co.uk/ Many thanks!

Of course, haha. I've also got the added bonus of having two classically trained parents(soprano and tenor) who are quite familiar with the piece :)
That helps! There's nothing better than knowing it!

I think the pronunciation of the words is my weakest area - but hopefully the choir director will sort that out!
