My first repair on my first car was a new muffler on a 71 VW in 78. I grew up watching my dad repair all of our cars but otherwise I was a total novice and struggled horribly. Someone took pity on me and bought me a new, Penney's 3/8 drive, metric ratchet set in a blow molded case. Life saver. I still have the set. It is mostly semi-retired because I started to acquire Craftsman. That set still comes in handy from time to time out in the shed. When you put your example back together and spun it the sound was SO familiar.🤪

Craftsman from sears definitely weren’t budget tools, they sold Dunlap and sears tools as their budget brands. While I know what you’re trying to say, they definitely weren’t budget, they were homeowner grade but made by professional manufacturers through the years. So depending on the year and the forge, craftsman pumped out professional tools at a pro-sumer price.

You're correct about the budget brand tools. My Dad bought Power Kraft tools from Montgomery Ward. And yes, they were cheap looking. However, I still occasionally use them, and they still work perfectly..

I purchased J.C. Penney tools back in the day. I still have my J.C. Penney Locking Pliers. They use to have a pretty good tool selection in their stores. It was similar to Sears back then. Then they stopped selling tools in the early 80's. They sold the car repair business to Firestone and they even stopped selling appliances.

Thanks for putting a date on when they stopped selling tools. So now o know this set was pre 80s. I wonder why they stopped selling tools? Too much competition ?🤔

@@snapringchronicles3020 I'm not sure why they stopped selling tools.

There's a Kraeuter ratchet with the exact same handle but the font is actually nice, someone on Garage Journal has a picture of the JC Penny and Kraeuter side by side.......Seems SK made ratchets for a lot of companies over the years......3530 is the JC Penny 1/4" ratchet.

I had a JC Penny SAE combination wrench set with roll pouch. Made in USA. I sold them. Quality was poor.

Like me some SK ratchets, but JC Penny sure contracted these to be fugly as fugg. The only ratchet I like with a squareish handle is the Craftsman RHFT. Everything else is terrible. Love the handles on the easco original version too.
