  • The pastures are beginning to dry out, and the cool-season grasses are going to seed (along with the thistle, mullien, water rush, and stinging nettle). The tall grasses are being ignored by the grazing alpacas, and the seeding of unwanted thistle, mullen, rush, and nettle will be a problem as they compete with the grasses. The answer? Mow them down before the seeds mature.

When I pull yellow star thistle, I remove the plants because they can go to seed even though they only have flowers. I wonder if any of your weeds can develop seeds after being cut? In any case, I think your plan to go after one plant (mullein) and then focus on other plants is good. It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed when undoing years of neglect!

Thank you for your advice. I have removed the mullien from the pastures. The thistle? They are next!
