- Soo i'm excited about this format because it means you get to see some of my more elaborate projects that I don't usually film. But I didn't pick the best week to film (it was kind of boring). I promise the next one will be a lot more interesting!
Also going to try to explain the process of things more and what i'm actually making. I need to start editing as I go instead of realizing my errors when everything is filmed. I'm still learning and I really appreciate your patience while I try to figure out formats and everything!

The amount that you get done, even without a full time job or school, is really amazing. It's really cool to see how much progress you make on a project a day. Honestly, it seems like you put more into this than most people put into a full time job, hours included (and you go above and beyond when it comes to putting effort and care into your work.) If I could be even half as productive as you are, I'd be happy c: Keep up the good work, and I look forward to watching more videos like this.
How can you call yourself lazy and unproductive so much? You do more in one day than I do in a week!
+Angela Hsiao I don't have very many other time commitments (a full time job or school) so if I take a day off from sewing, or only sew for an hour a day, it's because i'm being lazy haha.
I actually like this idea. Just that you don't stop with your other vids. I think it's inspiring to see what you get done in a day and how well you manage time. Also I think it's really great that you show the up and downs of the dress making process. It makes you wanna go for it even more. :D Thank you for taking your time to do these videos!
It is great you show the work, whether creative or mundane. In the end it shows that work can produce your amazing products. I am old enough to be your grandma I would think, but am learning a lot by watching your put your creations together. One thing is the need and ease for hand sewing in aspects of your gowns. I made a project for my 3 yo grandson and felt free to some of it in hand sewing. I like your Singer sewing machine too.
Love the idea of this video series. It was very interesting to see what your week looks like. I really enjoyed watching this video and look forward to the next installment.

Only just found your channel and thoroughly enjoyed watching this video log. Funnily enough, seeing projects broken down like this makes it look easier although I am sure your skills hide the difficulty. I have wrestled making arm patterns myself so understand the frustrations. keep up the good work.

I didn't find this video boring at all :) It was very interesting to see all the time-consuming details that go into making a stunning dress, and I do hope you'll keep this series up. The Civil War dress looks amazing!
I love this new style of filming, it gives a much more indepth veiw of what you are doing and what goes into the gowns that you make.
It was a very interesting week to watch, the amount of different projects you work on at the same time, astounds me.
I think this was a great idea! I really enjoyed watching all of this. Its interesting to see the projects that you make but this was a very cool "behind the scenes" sort of thing! Its also a bit inspirational to watch! Lots of fun!

i've been wondering for awhile why you hand sew in eyelets instead of just hammering in grommets? wouldn't that be easier and more durable? (i've never hand sewn my own so i have no idea)

Your civil war dress is stunning!!!! One time I was trying to learn how to make homemade bread and I could not find a video without bad language, so I had to figure it out myself. Your sewing talk is so nice without bad language and you have a nice personality.

Could you do a video of how you store your fabric/notions as well as how you organize your sewing room? Your space looks super functional and I think it would be cool to see how you stow everything away :)
This has been fascinating to watch! It makes me wonder if I would have enjoyed the master's in theater costuming that I ended up dropping out of shortly after I started.
Question: what is your favorite style of sleeve and skirt? Would you put a three layered skirt with a sweetheart neckline and bell sleeves?

Loved the lovely crocheted Irish lace on your headpiece. A stunning piece of lace work. The tatting was also lovely. I really like this vlog, it shows just how hard you work and I would appreciate hearing how your hard work is helping you reach your goals. Are you doing custom work? Do you aim for a specific job location? Museums/Disney? Movies? working in someone's Work room for a movie? I'm so curious, because I think you could get hired with just what you have now, and quickly develop any type of new skill they might ask for, I'm sure. I've always been very curious about the career development and would like to hear any news.
+mspatti Thank you! Right now i'm just working on building my portfolio and learning more techniques. I might be able to get a job with what I have now, but I really don't feel ready yet and i'm only 18, so i'm going to keep doing my thing for another year (at least) and then see whats out there.
I'm most interested in costumes for theater/stage productions (musicals, operas, ballets, etc.) or films. But I like sewing and making costumes in general, so i'm not too picky. Whenever there is news on the job front i'll share it, but right now I don't have anything to report!
I'm only 18... and sew like I did at 29. If there was somewhere to apprentice, you are the perfect age to start. Three years ago would not have been too young... Good Luck. It is exciting that you share your path. ... Thank you.
What do you use to lace up your dresses?
It was productive and very interesting. You really have a grasp on your processes and the structure of the progress.
There is a product called "Thread Magic" that is the BEST for silk thread. It's a conditioner that keeps it from binding and twisting. I'm sure this info is too late for this project, but maybe useful in the future.
I really enjoyed this. It's fun to see all the projects in different stages. I'd like to see your bead design process if your can do that sometime.

+Melanie Varela I'm glad you liked it! I've tried a few thread waxes but they always seem to leave a film on my fingers when i'm working with them, and i'm paranoid it'll leave marks on the fabric. But i'll have to look into that one!
My beading process isn't very technical. I usually buy the beads before I have it planned out, then shift things around on a beading mat until I have a design that works well with the materials/space I have to work with.
I will sometimes use a bit of Burt's Bee's lip balm. Just a small smear on my index finger and then run the thread between finer and thumb. The bee's wax in it will condition the thread and not leave any residue on your fabric.
I'm also careful to knot the cut end of the thread to prevent excess twisting.
Where do you purchase the majority of your fabric? Do you shop local or mostly from the garment district?
I'm about to start a civil war era dress for a show I am in where I play Mary Todd Lincoln. Are there any tips you have for starting on this project?
I know it's not your specialty, but is there any dress you've made that I can use to recreate a dress from the 50's?? I'm having a hard time finding a pattern to make one
I wanna learn to do all sewing and costume making and I'm interested in corset making.

And ive just figure out that ive been doing bodices all wrong but i have a dress form finally so that's gonna be a big help now the only big sewing things i need are an iron and sewing machine which i have been promised

Hello. First I have to say you are amazing. My mother is a fantastic seamstress. I have tried to sew with her help but it didn’t work out. It there a way you ca show how you design a pattern to end of project. I’m an art major and studied history of costume.

I figured out what I was doing wrong with the shoulder straps on my bodice pattern j made them too straight and when I want to do seprate straps I’m gonna just whip stitch them and not do seam allowance on them

Just wow! I just found out about you through the earthables post and man, you are one inspiring person. I've recently had to stop other commitments as well but you just keep on going without stop. I'm the kind of person that would always overthink too much before starting anything so I end up getting not enough done. How do you usually deal with such things?
+sweetangel0467 Thank you so much! I struggle with overthinking things as well. In the end you just have to push through. It's hard at first but the more you do it, the more confidence you gain about your ideas and the easier it becomes.
For me it helps to come up with a general idea and sketch of what I want to work on before buying fabric. Then I do my best not to think about the project until i'm ready to begin (as in the day I start) - otherwise I keep changing my plans!
Hah, great plan! I'm so worried about not getting it right the first time that I just end up not finishing or doing it.
Wow, I just found this program and it's really amazing, I just had to tell you! I'm a 3D artist btw, and this program seems to combine both your passion and mine! Maybe you'll find it interesting as well.
It's called Marvelous Designer and can create physically accurate folding of 2D patterns on a 3D mesh. Great for testing out how your patterns would look before even cutting fabric.

Hi I know this it a late reply...often Angela drafts her own patterns using reference photos from historical books. Learning to draft honestly isnt that hard if you can use a ruler 😊

It's a real shame your lace collar was too stained to be used, but at lease you were able to save the hand tatted lace edging.

Sorry, but this is not my favorite tutorial format for your work. I like to see the full working video showing the constructing and finishing of a garment. You have to be the most talented young woman that I have had the pleasure of watching as you grow with each video that you produce. The skills that you have aquired in the few years that you have been designing costumes is extraordinary. It will be interesting to see where your talents take you in the fashion world in the future.
